The influence of low-level viremia on CD4+ cell count in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients.

BACKGROUND: Following initiation of combined antiretroviral therapy, the majority of human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients experience immune reconstitution indicated by virologic suppression and an increase in peripheral CD4+ T-cell counts. Some patients may suffer from low-level viremia, which was reported to be significantly associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome cases, virologic failure, and death. We aimed to further investigate the influence of low-level viremia on CD4+ T-cell count. METHODS: In our study, we included human immunodeficiency virus-seropositive patient

The utility of routine cultures, cell count, and crystal evaluation of aspirate from aseptic olecranon bursitis.

BACKGROUND: Aspiration of the olecranon bursa is a treatment option for acute olecranon bursitis (OB). Typically, the aspirate is sent for microbiologic analysis, cell count, and crystal analysis. This study investigates the utility of fluid aspirate analysis from patients with clinically diagnosed aseptic OB. METHODS: In this prospective study (IRB #i20-00986), patients presenting with acute aseptic OB were treated with aspiration as standard of care. Patients consented to participate in this study via phone. Patients with suspected infectious bursitis, open draining wound, and chronic OB we

The Role of White Blood Cell Count in Perianal Pathologies: A Retrospective Analysis of Hematologic Malignancies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Infections are the most common cause of anal and perianal pathologies in patients with hematological malignancies. Perianal infection diagnosis in this group of patients is difficult; thus, a careful anorectal examination is necessary with imaging modalities. In addition, the literature reveals a knowledge gap in the approach to anal pathologies in patients with neutropenia during diagnosis or chemotherapy. This study aimed to examine our institutional data on perianal complications and investigate the relationship between the white blood cell-neutrophil count, perian

Common infectious morbidity and white blood cell count in middle childhood predict behavior problems in adolescence.

We examined the associations of middle childhood infectious morbidity and inflammatory biomarkers with adolescent internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. We recruited 1018 Colombian schoolchildren aged 5-12 years into a cohort. We quantified white blood cell (WBC) counts and C-reactive protein at enrollment and prospectively recorded incidence of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and fever-associated morbidity during the first follow-up year. After a median 6 years, we assessed adolescent internalizing and externalizing behavior problems using child behavior checklist (CBCL) and youth

White blood cell count and incidence of hypertension in the general Japanese population: ISSA-CKD study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between the white blood cell (WBC) count and hypertension in the general Japanese population. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using annual health check-up data of residents of Iki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. A total of 2935 participants without hypertension at baseline were included in the present analysis. WBC counts were classified as tertile 1 (<4700/μL), tertile 2 (4700-5999/μL), and tertile 3 (≥6000/μL). The outcome was incident hypertension (blood pressure ≥140 mmHg). Multivariable-adjuste

Quantitatively determining the somatic cell count of raw milk using dielectric spectra and support vector regression.

To investigate the potential of dielectric spectroscopy in quantitatively determining the somatic cell count (SCC) of raw milk, the dielectric spectra of 301 raw milk samples at different SCC were collected using coaxial probe technology in the frequency range of 20 to 4,500 MHz. Standard normal variate, Mahalanobis distance, and joint x-y distances sample division were used to pretreat spectra, detect outliers, and divide samples, respectively. Principal component analysis and variable importance in projection (VIP) methods were used to reduce data dimension and select characteristic variable

Blood Cell Count Biomarkers, Risk, and Outcomes of Ischemia-Related Lower Limb Amputations: A Systematic Review.

Lower limb amputations due to ischemia represent an important health care and social issue. However, there are currently no specific biomarkers able to predict the risk of amputation and postamputation complications and prognosis. We conducted a systematic review of studies investigating whether blood cell count indexes of systemic inflammation are linked to the risk and the outcome of lower limb amputations due to ischemia. Overall, in 22 studies involving 8832 patients selected for review, several blood cell count indexes, particularly the neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, showed some promise in

Circulating Cd34+ cell count differentiates primary myelofibrosis from other Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms: a pragmatic study.

A high number of circulating CD34+ cells has been advocated to distinguish primary myelofibrosis from other Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. We re-evaluated the diagnostic interest of measuring circulating CD34+ cells in 26 healthy volunteers and 256 consecutive patients at diagnosis for whom a myeloproliferative neoplasm was suspected. The ROC curve analysis showed that a number of CD34+ <10/μl excludes the diagnosis of primary myelofibrosis with a sensitivity of 97 % and a specificity of 90 % (area under the curve: 0.93 [0.89-0.98]; p < 0.001). Patients with PMF harboring

Neoplastic meningitis: How MRI and CSF cytology are influenced by CSF cell count and tumor type.

BACKGROUND: Although CSF cytology and MRI are standard methods to diagnose neoplastic meningitis (NM), this complication of neoplastic disease remains difficult to detect. We therefore reevaluated the sensitivity of gadolinium (GD)-enhanced MRI and cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF)-cytology and the relevance of tumor type and CSF cell count. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 111 cases of NM diagnosed in our CSF laboratory since 1990 with complete documentation of both MRI and CSF cytology. 37 had haematological and 74 solid neoplasms. CSF cell counts were increased in 74 and normal in 37 patient

Experience with local lymph node assay performance standards using standard radioactivity and nonradioactive cell count measurements.

The local lymph node assay (LLNA) is the preferred test for identification of skin-sensitizing substances by measuring radioactive thymidine incorporation into the lymph node. To facilitate acceptance of nonradioactive variants, validation authorities have published harmonized minimum performance standards (PS) that the alternative endpoint assay must meet. In the present work, these standards were applied to a variant of the LLNA based on lymph node cell counts (LNCC) run in parallel as a control with the standard LLNA with radioactivity measurements, with threshold concentrations (EC3) being

Leukocyte count and risk of thrombosis in patients undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation or intensive chemotherapy.

Elevated white blood cell count has recently been established as an independent risk factor for thromboembolic events in patients with myeloproliferative syndromes. Thrombotic events occur frequently in patients with haematological malignancies undergoing intensive cytoreductive treatment. We evaluated retrospectively the association of leukocyte counts and thrombosis in three cohorts of 100 patients each undergoing autologous or allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation or chemotherapy, respectively. A total of 26 thromboembolic events were recorded, 10 in recipients of allogeneic t

Elevated white cell count in acute coronary syndromes: relationship to variants in inflammatory and thrombotic genes.

BACKGROUND: Elevated white blood cell counts (WBC) in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) increase the risk of recurrent events, but it is not known if this is exacerbated by pro-inflammatory factors. We sought to identify whether pro-inflammatory genetic variants contributed to alterations in WBC and C-reactive protein (CRP) in an ACS population. METHODS: WBC and genotype of interleukin 6 (IL-6 G-174C) and of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN intronic repeat polymorphism) were investigated in 732 Caucasian patients with ACS in the OPUS-TIMI-16 trial. Samples for measurement of WBC and infl

The role of white cell count and C-reactive protein in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent advances in diagnostic medicine, the diagnosis of appendicitis is still doubtful in a number of cases. Majority of the clinicians rely on their clinical examination strengthened by the laboratory tests. This study was carried out to find out the specificity and sensitivity of white cell count (WCC) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in diagnosing appendicitis in patients presenting with right iliac fossa pain. METHODS: A total of 259 patients were included in this study that presented in the hospital with acute right iliac fossa pain and later on operated and had appendic

Differential cell count and lymphocyte subsets in bronchoalveolar lavage during pneumonia with and without peripheral neutropenia.

One hundred immunocompromised HIV negative patients with microbiologically positive pneumonia underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) studies. Thirty cases showed peripheral neutropenia (< 1000 neutrophils/microL), 70 did not. The total cell number in BAL, the differential cell counts, and the lymphocyte subsets (CD4, CD8, CD19, CD57) were measured. Patients with pneumonia and normal or elevated peripheral neutrophils had a significantly increased total number of cells in BAL compared to patients with peripheral neutropenia (3.2 +/- 2 vs 1.3 +/- 0.6 x 10(5) cells/ml2 lavage fluid, p < 0.01). Biphasic rate of CD4+ cell count decline during progression to AIDS correlates with HIV-1 phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the kinetics of decline of CD4+ lymphocytes in HIV-1-infected asymptomatic homosexual men. METHODS: CD4+ lymphocytes were enumerated in a cohort of 187 HIV-1-infected initially asymptomatic homosexual men seen at 3-month intervals over 5 years. During follow-up, 45 men progressed to AIDS (excluding cases presenting with Kaposi's sarcoma). Correlation between rate of CD4+ cell decline and presence of a particular HIV-1 biological phenotype was analysed in 43 participants. RESULTS: CD4+ cell counts declined slowly and continuously in HIV-1-seropositive men who remained
