A case report of intracardiac bone cement embolization after posterior decompression and cement-enhanced pedicle screw fixation for osteoporosis and lumbar degeneration.

RATIONALE: Bone cement leakage is a common complication of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) and percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) surgery and has also been reported in posterior decompression and cement-enhanced pedicle screw fixation. When bone cement leaks through the venous system, it will have serious consequences and even endanger the life of the patient, especially when the bone cement causes intracardiac embolism. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 70-year-old woman developed chest tightness and decreased blood oxygen saturation following posterior decompression and cement-enhanced pedicle screw fixati

Intrusion Characteristics of High Viscosity Bone Cements for the Tibial Component of a Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Negative Pressure Intrusion Cementing Technique.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of new bone cements with different viscosities, it is important to understand how they respond to different cementing techniques. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the high viscosity (HV) bone cement intrusion characteristics comparing negative pressure intrusion technique (NPI) and finger-packing technique in a cadaveric proximal tibial bone. METHODS: Soft tissues were removed from twenty- four fresh frozen cadaver proximal tibiae, and standard arthroplasty tibial cuts were performed. Bone cement embolism causing right ventricle perforation.

BACKGROUND: Bone cement embolism is one of major complications of percutaneous kyphoplasty. Although rare, the intracardiac cement embolism is potentially life-threatening, with a documented incidence of 3.9%, and it is even more infrequent if symptomatic (0.3%). CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we reported an extremely rare case of intracardiac bone cement embolism after percutaneous kyphoplasty causing right ventricle perforation. A 70-year-old woman, experiencing sudden left chest pain with radiation to the shoulder for 9 h, was transferred to our emergency department. Two hours before onset of

Diazonium chemistry for bonding between PEEK and resin cement.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an excellent restorative material, but its hydrophobicity and inertness prevent strong adhesion to resin cements. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to examine the use of diazonium reactions for priming PEEK surfaces to improve their adhesion to resin cements. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Polished PEEK specimens were exposed to 7 different treatments: airborne-particle abrasion (50 µm) (APA), diazonium priming (D), adhesive (visio-link) application (A), APA followed by A (APAA), D and A (DA), APA and D (APAD), and APA followed by D a

Complications of antibiotic cement spacers used for elbow infections.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic cement spacers have been widely used in the treatment of joint infections. There are no commercially available antibiotic spacers for the elbow. Instead, they are typically fashioned by the surgeon at the time of surgery using cement alone or a combination of cement with sutures, Steinmann pins, external fixator components, or elbow arthroplasty components. There is no consensus regarding the ideal elbow antibiotic spacer and no previous studies have examined the complications associated with these handmade implants in relation to their unique structural design. METHODS

Impact of Manual Addition of Vancomycin to Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) Cements.

(1) Background: The addition of antibiotics to bone cements is a common practice in the treatment of periprosthetic joint infections. In revision cases, the amount and type of antibiotic is often insufficient and additional antibiotics must be added. The addition, however, changes the product itself, and the surgeon becomes the "manufacturer" of the bone cement. PMMAe wished to clarify whether the admixture of antibiotics changes the mechanical stability of the bone cements used and if the added antibiotics were still functional and released in sufficient quantities. (2) Methods: We compared t

Polyvinyl chloride solvent cement poisoning: a case report.

BACKGROUND: S-lon® (S) is a locally produced polyvinyl chloride-based solvent cement. It is a clear, slightly viscous liquid. Other constituents include 1-cyclohexanone, 3-butanone, and 1-acetone. It is used ubiquitously for building construction in Sri Lanka. Although the clinical effects of the compound have not yet been ascertained, the constituents have been implicated in neurotoxicity, respiratory tract, eye and skin irritation, and delayed liver and renal injury. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old South Asian male presented following self-ingestion of S. His vital parameters were stable an

Rescue technique for trapped bone needle in cement cast.

Avascular necrosis, or Kummel disease, is a potential complication of vertebral compression fractures. It is believed to arise as a result of a failed fracture healing process,1 2 leading to the formation of an air or fluid filled cavity within the vertebral body.3 Percutaneous vertebroplasty seems to provide both pain relief and increased spinal stability in avascular necrosis.4 In this technical video, we present the case of an osteoporotic patient with a complicated vertebroplasty, caused by trapping of the bone needle inside the intravertebral cement cast. Two methods were used sequentiall

Cemented Versus Noncemented Total Knee Arthroplasty Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Aseptic loosening remains one of the most common indications for revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Given the demographic shift to a younger and more active TKA patient population, some surgeons have revisited noncemented fixation given its potential for lower rates of long-term aseptic loosening. The purpose of this study was to compare the demographics and complications between patients undergoing noncemented and cemented TKA. METHODS: Using the MKnee subset of the PearlDiver database, diagnosis and procedure codes were used to identify patients who had undergone cemented

Use of Glass Ionomer Cement for Incudostapedial Rebridging Ossiculoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: The ossicles of the middle ear are affected by the erosive effect of pathology in chronic otitis media. Ossicular reparation can be done via autologous incus or with alloplastic materials. Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is simple to use and saves considerable operative time and expenses especially in developing countries where costly ossicular prosthesis are not affordable for the majority of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five chronic otitis media patients who underwent surgery were included in this study. The reconstruction material used in this study was glass ionome

Antibiotic-loaded Bone Cement in the Management of Neosternal Osteomyelitis.

Antibiotic-loaded bone cement is an alternative treatment option that can be used in the surgical management of osteomyelitis requiring bone resection and reconstruction. Current literature provides a focus on its use within the orthopedic patient group with scarce literature surrounding the cardiothoracic patient demographic. We hereby demonstrate the use of an antibiotic-loaded bone cement in the definitive management of neosternal osteomyelitis and nonunion, avoiding the need for further complex autografting and internal fixation.

Fiber reinforcement of a resin modified glass ionomer cement.

OBJECTIVES: Understand how discontinuous short glass fibers and braided long fibers can be effectively used to reinforce a resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) for carious lesion restorations. METHODS: Two control groups (powder/liquid kit and capsule) were prepared from a light cured RMGIC. Either discontinuous short glass fibers or braided polyethylene fiber ribbons were used as a reinforcement both with and without pre-impregnation with resin. For the former case, the matrix was the powder/liquid kit RMGIC, and for the latter case the matrix was the capsule form. Flexural strength w

Cement injection and postoperative vertebral fractures during vertebroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Vertebroplasty is the most widely used method for treating osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF). During this procedure, bone cement is injected into the vertebral body. Fracture and additional fractures can occur adjacent to the treatment site. Thus, we studied factors causing such vertebral fractures after vertebroplasty and calculated the appropriate amount of bone cement to inject. METHODS: From September 2012 to March 2016, 187 patients with OVCF undergoing vertebroplasty were selected, and 112 patients with complete follow-up information were selected. Of these,
