Hierarchical Strain-Modified Medium-Entropy Carbide Ceramics Exhibit Exceptional Ablation Resistance up to 2400°C.

Carbide ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTCs) exhibit high melting points and are regarded as promising candidate materials for applications in ultrahigh-temperature conditions, such as high-speed flight vehicles. However, a high melting point alone is inadequate because thermal shock is typically associated with intense shear and oxidation, which require carbide UHTCs to not only have elevated temperature resistance but also robust structural stability. Herein, we present a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-reinforced (HfZrTi)C medium-entropy ceramic (HZTMEC) that maintains structural integrity u

Comparative evaluation of fracture toughness between zirconia and lithium disilicate ceramics: An in vitro study.

Fracture toughness is a critical determinant of long-term success in all-ceramic restorations, yet comparative data between major ceramic systems remain limited. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate and compare the fracture toughness of yttria-stabilized zirconia and lithium disilicate ceramics. Forty CAD/CAM-fabricated specimens were tested using Vickers indentation and fracture toughness was calculated via the indentation fracture method. Zirconia showed significantly higher fracture toughness (408.61 ± 44.21 MPa.m1/2) and hardness than lithium disilicate (359.40 ± 19.00 MPa.m1/2) (p <0.

A Comparative Evaluation of Enamel Wear Against Different Surface Finished Ceramics: An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: An essential factor in the clinical acceptability of all ceramic restorations is the degree of tooth enamel wear. Wear of human enamel has been shown to produce traumatic occlusion, loss of vertical dimension, supra eruption of opposing teeth, periodontal disintegration, and temporomandibular dysfunction. To assess and compare enamel wear against two different ceramics (IPS Empress and Zirconia) and against three different ceramic surface treatments (autoglazed, overglazed, and polished). METHODS: Zirconia and IPS Empress (Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) ceramic samples totaled 3

β→α Phase Transformation and Properties of Solid-State-Sintered SiC Ceramics with TaC Addition.

Dense SiC-based composite ceramics were fabricated by means of the ex situ addition of TaC using solid-state spark plasma sintering (SPS). Commercially available β-SiC and TaC powders were chosen as raw materials. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis was conducted to investigate the grain boundary mapping of SiC-TaC composite ceramics. With the increase in TaC, the misorientation angles of the α-SiC phase shifted to a relatively small range. It was deduced that the ex situ pinning stress from TaC greatly suppressed the growth of α-SiC grains. The low β→α transformability of the s

Recycling of spent adsorbents for oxyanions and heavy metal ions in the production of ceramics.

Spent adsorbents for oxyanion forming elements and heavy metals are classified as hazardous materials and they are typically treated by stabilization/solidification before landfilling. The use of lime or cement for stabilization/solidification entails a high environmental impact and landfilling costs are high. This paper shows that mixing spent adsorbents in the raw material for the production of ceramic materials is a valuable alternative to stabilize oxyanion forming elements and heavy metals. The produced ceramics can be used as construction material, avoiding the high economic and environm

CAD-CAM ceramic material options for discolored teeth.

Creating a natural appearance with proper shade matching is critical for achieving successful esthetic outcomes of dental ceramic restorations. Ceramic materials with high translucency are often preferred when restoring teeth with a normal stump shade. However, ceramic materials with increased opacity, such as zirconia, offer significant advantages when restoring discolored teeth. This video presentation describes 4 different ceramic material options that enable clinicians to effectively mask dark stump shades while maintaining the natural appearance of dental ceramic restorations.

Ceramic-based biomaterials: Combining regeneration with anti-senescence.

The global aging crisis presents significant challenges in treating age-related skeletal disorders, characterized by impaired bone regeneration due to senescent microenvironment dysfunction. While anti-senescence drugs have shown promising therapeutic potential, their clinical use is hindered by severe side effects and limited regenerative efficacy. Biomaterials-based anti-senescence strategies offer a promising alternative. This study is the first to demonstrate that silicate bioceramics possess not only osteogenic properties but also intrinsic anti-senescence capabilities, laying the foundat

Migration kinetics of cadmium and lead from ceramic mugs.

Cadmium and Pb are heavy metals of high concern owing to their impacts on human health. In this study, the migration of Cd and Pb from both the interior and exterior (lip area) surfaces of new and second-hand ceramic mugs has been measured as a function of time over a 24-h period using 4 % acetic acid. Via regression analysis, data were fitted with a diffusion equation, yielding reaction rate constants and 24-h migratable concentrations. Migration was more significant from the external surfaces for both metals, and especially where the rim area was overglazed with decorative Cd sulphoselenide

Rotation Lifting and Spinning for Durable Ceramic Aerogel Fiber.

Aerogel fibers have attracted significant interest due to their low thermal conductivity and notable flexibility. This flexibility enables them to be bent, tied, and woven into fabrics, thereby broadening their applications. However, current aerogel fibers suffer from limited environmental stability and a complex manufacturing process. Herein, a novel rotation lifting and spinning method is proposed to fabricate continuous and flexible ceramic aerogel fibers using ceramic nanowires and ethanol as the starting materials. The synthesized Si3N4 aerogel fiber (SNAF), composed of Si3N4 nanowires, a

Development of Composite Ceramic Membranes for Carbon Dioxide Detection.

Porous La2MoWO9 (W-LAMOX) impregnated with a eutectic mixture of lithium, sodium, and potassium carbonate (LNKC) ceramic membranes was synthesized and evaluated for carbon dioxide (CO2) sensing applications. Structural, microstructural, and electrical characterizations were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and impedance spectroscopy. The results indicate that sintered thinner membranes, prepared by the tape casting method, exhibit faster and more reproducible responses to CO2 exposure than sintered thick pressed pellets. These findings highlight th

A Ceramic-Electrolyte Glucose Fuel Cell for Implantable Electronics.

Next-generation implantable devices such as sensors, drug-delivery systems, and electroceuticals require efficient, reliable, and highly miniaturized power sources. Existing power sources such as the Li-I2 pacemaker battery exhibit limited scale-down potential without sacrificing capacity, and therefore, alternatives are needed to power miniaturized implants. This work shows that ceramic electrolytes can be used in potentially implantable glucose fuel cells with unprecedented miniaturization. Specifically, a ceramic glucose fuel cell-based on the proton-conducting electrolyte ceria-that is com

Adjustment of retention of all-ceramic double-crown attachments.

OBJECTIVES: Double-crown attachments, such as conical crowns (CCs), can retain removable partial prostheses. Digital manufacturing enables the use of innovative materials such as zirconia, and new workflows. The aim of this study was to investigate options for the adjustment of retention forces of all-zirconia CCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single zirconia primary crowns were produced with convergence angles (α) of 3 and 4 degrees, together with monolithic zirconia secondary crowns (n = 8 for α = 3 degrees; n = 8 for α = 4 degrees). Retention was measured by fitting the crowns with forces F = 12

Characterization of fly ash ceramic pellet for phosphorus removal.

Phosphorus has been recognized as a leading pollutant for surface water quality deterioration. In the Midwestern USA, subsurface drainage not only provides a pathway for excess water to leave the field but it also drains out nutrients like nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Fly ash has been identified as one of the viable materials for phosphorus removal from contaminated waters. In this study, a ceramic pellet was manufactured using fly ash for P absorption. Three types of pellet with varying lime and clay proportions by weight (type 1: 10% lime + 30% clay, type 2: 20% lime + 20% clay, and type

Targeted Delivery of Hyaluronan-Immobilized Magnetic Ceramic Nanocrystals.

Effective cancer therapy relies on delivering the therapeutic agent precisely to the target site to improve the treatment outcome and to minimize side effects. Although surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are the standard methods commonly used in clinics, hyperthermia has been developed as a new and promising strategy for cancer therapy. In this study, magnetic bioceramic hydroxyapatite (mHAP) nanocrystals have been developed as heat mediator for intracellular hyperthermia. Hyaluronic acid (HA) modified mHAP nanocrystals are synthesized by a wet chemical precipitation process to achieve ac

Residual stress measurement in veneering ceramic by hole-drilling.

OBJECTIVES: Mismatch in thermal expansion properties between veneering ceramic and metallic or high-strength ceramic cores can induce residual stresses and initiate cracks when combined with functional stresses. Knowledge of the stress distribution within the veneering ceramic is a key factor for understanding and predicting chipping failures, which are well-known problems with Yttria-tetragonal-zirconia-polycrystal based fixed partial dentures. The objectives of this study are to develop a method for measuring the stress profile in veneering ceramics and to compare ceramic-fused-to-metal comp
