We report on the case of a 15-year-old adolescent who presented with a transient paraplegia and hyposensibility of the upper extremities after sustaining a minor hyperflexion trauma to the cervical spine. Neuroimaging studies revealed atlantoaxial dislocation and ventral compression of the rostral spinal cord with increased cord signal at C1/C2 levels caused by an os odontoideum, as well as anterior and posterior arch defects of the atlas. The patient underwent closed reduction and posterior atlantoaxial fusion. We describe the association of an acquired instability secondary to an os odontoid

The article reports on injuries of the cervical spine occurring during sports activities. An attempt is made to reconstruct the movements which led to the cervical spine injuries in question. In two cases of accidents occurring during bathing, one football accident and a toboggan accident, the injuries concerned point to hyperextension of the cervical spine as cause of the injury. In another football accident and a riding accident, the changes observed allow us to conclude that the movement leading to the injury must have been a hyperflexion. One accident occurring while jumping on the trampol

BACKGROUND: C1-ring osteosynthesis is a valid alternative to posterior C1-C2 or C0-C2 fusion to preserve important C1-C2 motion in the treatment of unstable atlas fractures. Nevertheless, the fixation instruments used in current studies for transoral anterior C1-ring osteosynthesis were not suitable for anterior anatomy of the atlas or did not have reduction mechanism. We therefore present this report to investigate preliminary clinical effects of transoral anterior C1-ring osteosynthesis using a laminoplasty plate in unstable atlas fractures.
METHODS: From January 2014 to December 2017, 13 p

The myodural bridge was proposed initially in 1995. The myodural bridge is a connective tissue bridge that connects a pair of deep muscles at the suboccipital region to the dura mater. There have been numerous studies concerning the morphology and function of the myodural bridge. To determine whether a myodural bridge exists in reptiles, six Siamese crocodiles were investigated using gross anatomy dissection and P45 sheet plastination technologies. As a result, we demonstrated that the posterior occipital muscles of the Siamese crocodile are directly or indirectly connected to the proatlas, at

We report a patient with a bipartite atlas that was noted on preoperative skull radiographs for fractures of facial bones.

A case of a vertical fracture of the anterior arch of the atlas associated with a congenital cleft of the posterior arch of the same vertebra is reported. Such an association has not previously been described in the literature. X-Ray computed tomography is an excellent exam for visualizing this region and for easily distinguishing between fractures and congenital clefts.

Congenital clefts and aplasias of the atlas vertebra, while rare, are often first encountered in the emergency room setting. Thirty-six patients with atlas malformations and 10 with Jefferson fractures were encountered. Sixteen of the patients with congenital malformations showed bilateral atlantoaxial lateral offset, a finding generally considered to be the result of fracture. The diagnosis of these abnormalities is readily made from plain films by noting their characteristic features. Anomalies produce lateral offset of 1-2 mm. Jefferson fractures produce a greater offset (over 3 mm).

Fractures and dislocations of the upper cervical spine (atlas and axis) differ markedly from those of the lower cervical spine (C3 - C7) because of the unique anatomy and function of these two vertebrae. Case reports of 4 rugby players who sustained serious injuries of the upper cervical spine are presented. The role of the high tackle in causing these injuries is described and the association of head and upper cervical spinal trauma is emphasized. The radiological management of the player with suspected injury is outlined.

In cervical trauma, x-rays may require supplementation with dynamic x-rays, computed-tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A normal cervical x-ray does not always imply cervical stability. The mechanism of injury, symptoms and signs help to indicate whether further imaging is required. We report a patient with a fracture of the atlas that was not diagnosed by plain radiology, but seen on CT.

Congenital absence of part of the anterior arch of the atlas, a rare disorder, was observed in two patients. The defect in the C1 cervical vertebrae, caused by congenital nonfusion of the arch of C1, may be confused with a cervical spinal fracture on plain radiographs of the cervical spine. The diagnosis is established by characteristic radiological changes, especially in the CT scan and bone scan. Because congenital anomalies of the cervical spine may predispose to instability of the cervical spine and can be confused with traumatic lesions, thorough evaluation is warranted. Treatment should

AIM: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the presence of the ponticulus posticus (PP) frequently encountered in lateral cephalograms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 500 patients of age 12-40 years were selected whose digital lateral cephalogram was recorded and traced to confirm the presence of the PP and categorize as: (A) Absent, as evidenced by lateral cephalograms. (B) Complete PP evidenced by the presence of circumferential bone bridge that connected the upper articular process to the atlas's posterior arch. (C) Partial PP: presented as a bone spike that protruded from the

The inferior accessory ossicle of the anterior arch of the atlas is quite rare and has been described in the literature by only few articles. However, these articles have only included plain radiographs in the description. In our case, the above ossicle is illustrated in two imaging modalities, plain radiography and CT imaging. The importance of this ossicle lies in its recognition as only an anatomical variant and not to be confused with other pathological conditions such as a fracture.
