Potential and limitations of on-line comprehensive reversed phase liquid chromatography×supercritical fluid chromatography for the separation of neutral compounds: An approach to separate an aqueous extract of bio-oil.

On-line comprehensive Reversed Phase Liquid Chromatography×Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (RPLCxSFC) was investigated for the separation of complex samples of neutral compounds. The presented approach aimed at overcoming the constraints involved by such a coupling. The search for suitable conditions (stationary phases, injection solvent, injection volume, design of interface) are discussed with a view of ensuring a good transfer of the compounds between both dimensions, thereby allowing high effective peak capacity in the second dimension. Instrumental aspects that are of prime importance

Molecular cartography in acute Chlamydia pneumoniae infections--a non-targeted metabolomics approach.

Infections with Chlamydia pneumoniae cause several respiratory diseases, such as community-acquired pneumonia, bronchitis or sinusitis. Here, we present an integrated non-targeted metabolomics analysis applying ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry and ultra-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry to determine metabolite alterations in C. pneumoniae-infected HEp-2 cells. Most important permutations are elaborated using uni- and multivariate statistical analysis, logD retention time regression and mass defect-based network analysis. Classes of metabolites showing high variations u

Tetrathiafulvalene diindolylquinoxaline: a dual signaling anion receptor with phosphate selectivity.

Incorporation of tetrathiafulvalene into the backbone of a known neutral phosphate receptor, diindolylquinoxaline, yields a dual optical-electrochemical chemosensor for dihydrogen phosphate that functions in dichloromethane. This system shows selectivity for dihydrogen phosphate over other small anions and can be used to detect the presence of this analyte via fluorescence quenching or cyclic voltammetry.

Fluorescent salicylaldehyde hydrazone as selective chemosensor for Zn2+ in aqueous ethanol: a ratiometric approach.

4-N,N-diethylaminosalicylaldehyde hydrazone Schiff base (1) and its analogues (2-6) were synthesized and characterized by NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Compound 1 exhibited ratiometric fluorescent response to Zn(2+) over other metal ions in aqueous ethanol solution with neutral buffer. The complexation ratio, site and constant and the effect of pH value and water fraction on its fluorescent response to Zn(2+) were investigated.

Bayesian-integrated microbial forensics.

In the aftermath of the 2001 anthrax letters, researchers have been exploring ways to predict the production environment of unknown-source microorganisms. Culture medium, presence of agar, culturing temperature, and drying method are just some of the broad spectrum of characteristics an investigator might like to infer. The effects of many of these factors on microorganisms are not well understood, but the complex way in which microbes interact with their environments suggests that numerous analytical techniques measuring different properties will eventually be needed for complete characteriza

Comparison of PCE and TCE disappearance in heated volatile organic analysis vials and flame-sealed ampules.

The rates of hydrolysis reported for tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) at elevated temperatures range over two orders-of-magnitude, where some of the variability may be due to the presence of a gas phase. Recent studies suggest that volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials provide a low-cost and readily available zero headspace system for measuring aqueous-phase hydrolysis rates. This work involved measuring rates of PCE and TCE disappearance and the corresponding appearance of dechlorination products in water-filled VOA vials and flame-sealed ampules incubated at 21 and 55 de

Adjusted active carbon fibers for solid phase microextraction.

Adjusted active carbon fiber (AACF) was evaluated for Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME), which showed higher sensitivity and stability than traditional coating fibers. The characteristics of AACF result from two different activation methods (chemical and water vapor) and from variable activation conditions (temperature and time). The fiber treated by water vapor appears to have stronger affinity to polar compounds, while that treated by chemical activation appears to have stronger affinity to non-polar compounds. For different target compounds ranged from non-polar to polar, AACF design could

Spectrophotometric determination of ephedrine HCl, cinchonine HCl, chlorpheniramine maleate, atropine sulphate and diphenhydramine HCl by solvent extraction of reineckate complexes.

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of some alkaloids (namely ephedrine HCl, cinchonine HCl, chlorpheniramine maleate, atropine sulphate and diphenhydramine HCl) as separate compounds as well as in pharmaceutical preparations through the formation of their ion-pair (reineckate complexes) is described. These complexes were prepared and the final products were extracted with nitrobenzene in situ. The optimum conditions for complete extraction were evaluated by investigating the nature of solvent, pH, time of shaking, temperature and reineckate concentrations. The absorption spectra

Physical Organic Chemistry in Biochemical Toxicology and the Career of Robert P. "Bob" Hanzlik.

The career of Robert Hanzlik had a dramatic impact on the application of physical organic chemistry to the field of biochemical toxicology. Publications that came out of the Hanzlik laboratory helped to establish and broaden the exploration of physical organic chemistry in biochemical toxicology. Bob expertly employed model compounds and systems to probe and explore various facets of the chemistries resulting in toxic insults. His lab examined mechanisms of formation of reactive metabolites in detail. Bob engaged a range of approaches in support of these studies including synthetic chemistry,

Preparation and sorption properties of materials from paper sludge.

Three materials were prepared from paper sludge (PS) using different treatment processes and their sorption abilities for phosphate and methylene blue (MB) were determined. The samples were a powder sample prepared by heating PS in air (sample C), a pellet prepared by grinding, forming and heating PS in air (sample G) and a powder prepared by physical activation of PS in flowing wet nitrogen (sample A). The three samples were heated at 600-900 degrees C for 6h. On heating at 700-800 degrees C, the organic fibers, limestone (CaCO3), kaolinite (Al2Si2O5(OH)4) and talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2) in the ori

Historical perspectives in clinical pathology: a history of glucose measurement.

This is the second in the series of historical articles dealing with developments in clinical pathology. As one of the most commonly measured analytes in pathology, the assessment of glucose dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. It was only in the 19th century that advances in chemistry led to the identification of the sugar in urine being glucose. The following century witnessed the development of more chemical and enzymatic methods which became incorporated into the modern analysers and point-of-care instruments which are as ubiquitous as the modern day cellphones. Direct incorporation of babassu biochar into graphite conductive ink for the voltammetric determination of flunixin using a screen-printed electrode.

The development of sustainable electrochemical sensors based on renewable carbon materials has gained increasing attention within the framework of Green Analytical Chemistry. In this work, a screen-printed electrode (SPE) was fabricated using a lab-made conductive ink composed of graphite (Gr) and babassu-derived biochar (BBC), employing nail polish as a low-cost binder. The incorporation of BBC directly into the conductive ink provided improved electrochemical performance compared to the unmodified electrode, with the composition containing 2.5% BBC showing the best analytical response. Preparation and Analysis of Quantum Dots: Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis.

The implementation of quantum dots in analytical chemistry has already advanced from basic research activities to routine applications of commercially available fluorescent agents present in sophisticated assays kits. Nevertheless, a further development of new preparation and characterization methods of nanoparticles is still required to increase the sensitivity of analytical methods substantially. Thus, in many bioanalytical applications, important molecules such as DNA, proteins, and antibodies are routinely conjugated with fluorescent tags to reach even the absolute sensitivity, that is, th
