Use of Job Exposure Matrices to Inform COVID-19 Vaccine Promotion Among Non-Health Care Workers in Chicago, Illinois.

BACKGROUND: Occupation, a risk factor for SARS-CoV-2 exposure, is excluded from immunization records. Identifying undervaccinated workers could optimize interventions to protect vulnerable populations. METHODS: We analyzed health department case interviews (June 2021 to May 2022) to describe 3763 non-health care workers with COVID-19 in Chicago. Job exposure matrices categorized SARS-CoV-2 exposure risk through frequency of indoor work and proximity to the public and to coworkers. Logistic regression quantified associations between occupational risk and vaccination status. RESULTS: Pre-Omicr…

Risky Weapon Carrying Behaviors, Youth Violence, and Substance Use Among Young Black Males in Chicago: A Cross-sectional Analysis.

Objectives . The study evaluates the prevalence of risky weapon-carrying behaviors (WCB) among YBM in Chicago and examines their associations with various forms of direct and vicarious violence-youth violence, community violence, and partner abuse-as well as substance use and substance-related aggression. Methods . We performed Pearson Chi-square tests and multivariable negative binomial regression analysis on cross-sectional data from 266 violence-involved young Black males (YBM) in Chicago. This data was collected using a modified version of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Y…

Declining health risk exposure among Chicago public high school students: Trends from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey 1997-2017.

There have been improvements nationally in teenagers' self-reported health risk since the 1990s. This study provides an overview of trends in substance use, sexual health, violence and victimization, and suicide risk among Chicago Public High School (CPS) students over a 20-year period. We compared responses to 29 identically worded items from the 1997, 2007, and 2017 Chicago Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in the four domains. We show changes in responses across individual items, mean changes across the four domains, and change in the proportion of students with highest risk exposure (≥10 a…

Risk Factors for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection in Homeless Shelters in Chicago, Illinois-March-May, 2020.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness are at increased risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but little is known about specific risk factors for infection within homeless shelters. METHODS: We performed widespread severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) polymerase chain reaction testing and collected risk factor information at all homeless shelters in Chicago with at least 1 reported case of COVID-19 (n = 21). Multivariable, mixed-effects log-binomial models were built to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) for SARS-CoV-2 infection for both individual…

Genetic variation associated with mammalian feeding in Culex pipiens from a West Nile virus epidemic region in Chicago, Illinois.

Mosquitoes of the Culex pipiens complex are important vectors of West Nile virus in the United States. We examined the genetic variations of Cx. pipiens mosquitoes from Chicago, Illinois that were determined to be principally ornithophilic but exhibited a relatively higher inclination for mammalian hosts including humans. Microsatellite analysis of 10 polymorphic markers was performed on 346 engorged Cx. pipiens specimens with identified avian or mammalian blood meals. Our results indicated that there were no significant differences in allelic richness, the pattern of conformity to Hardy-Weinb…

Long-term follow-up of nonmyeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplantation for renal cell carcinoma: The University of Chicago Experience.

Nonmyeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplantation (NST) has considerable activity in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC), although there are limited long-term follow-up data. Between February 1999 and May 2003, 18 patients with metastatic RCC underwent 19 matched-sibling NSTs after conditioning with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide with tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil as post-transplant immunosuppression. Among the four objective responses, all were partial and have relapsed with a median response duration of 609 days (range, 107-926). All responders are alive at a med

Colorectal carcinoma. A staff model HMO's experience with screening and hospital use. ANCHOR Organization for Health Maintenance, Chicago, Illinois.

The authors present a staff model HMO's experience over an 18 month prospective period with the 35 cm flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) and over a three year retrospective period of colorectal carcinoma related hospitalizations. In 735 asymptomatic patients receiving FS, 54 (7.3%) polyps and 5 (.68%) carcinomas (4 Dukes'A and 1 Dukes'B) were detected by FS. In asymptomatic patients who were fecal occult blood test (FOBT) positive, 3 (3.3%) carcinomas and 8 (8.9%) polyps were detected by FS. Additionally, one FOBT negative, FS negative patient had a Dukes' A carcinoma detected by screening air contra

Hemoglobin J-Chicago (beta76(E20) Ala yields Asp): a new hemoglobin variant resulting from substitution of an external residue.

An electrophoretically fast-moving hemoglobin variant was found in a 2-yr-old boy who was referred for evaluation with findings of iron deficiency anemia. The anemia was corrected, and no hematologic abnormality remained after treatment with iron. Oxygen affinity of the blood was normal, and no evidence was found of instability of the variant hemoglobin. Structural studies demonstrated a substitution of aspartic acid for alanine at beta76 (E20). This change did not appear to cause any functional disruption of the hemoglobin in this patient, as would be predicted by the position of the affected

Co-designing a Blueprint for Home Delivery of Long-Acting Injectable Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for Sexual Minority Men in Chicago.

Reducing HIV incidence requires effective implementation of evidence-based prevention practices. Long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) offers a new form of effective prevention, but maximizing uptake requires co-designing implementation strategies with impacted populations. In Chicago, where HIV disproportionately impacts sexual minority men (SMM), a community-focused innovation tournament identified home-based CAB-LA delivery as the top strategy. Through a partnership with key constituents, this research aimed to operationalize this strategy for SMM (≥ 13 years) in Chicago, with partic…

A Comparison between Chicago Classification Versions 3.0 and 4.0 and Their Impact on Manometric Diagnoses in Esophageal High-Resolution Manometry Cases.

High-resolution manometry (HRM) facilitates the detailed evaluation of esophageal motility. In December 2020, Chicago classification (CC) version 4.0 introduced modifications to improve consistency and accuracy. We conducted this study to compare the differences in the interpretations of HRM examinations between CC 3.0 and 4.0. Consecutive HRM records at a Taiwan tertiary medical center, including wet swallows and MRS performed in both supine and sitting positions from October 2019 to May 2021, were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed using both CC versions 3.0 and 4.0. A total of 105 patien…

Antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus aureus at the University of Chicago Hospitals: a 15-year longitudinal assessment in a large university-based hospital.

OBJECTIVES: To describe a longitudinal profile of resistance to beta-lactam antimicrobials among isolates of Staphylococcus aureus at a large university teaching hospital and to evaluate the impact of the methicillin resistance phenotype on resistance trends for non-beta-lactam antimicrobials. DESIGN: Retrospective evaluation of antimicrobial susceptibility data for all 17,287 S. aureus isolates obtained from January 1986 through December 2000. SETTING: The University of Chicago Hospitals, a family of tertiary-care, university-affiliated hospitals in Chicago, Illinois, consisting of 547 adul…
