Immunohistochemistry revealed an Ig-A-like substance on the luminal surface of the pineal follicles and in the parafollicular layer. This substance was observed around 1 week of age and disappeared by 8 weeks at the time when the transformation of the follicular pattern leads to an adult-type pineal tissue.

Immune responsiveness of three neonatal and juvenile phenotypes, determined by the albinotic C locus, was evaluated. A study of live-chicken hangers in a poultry processing plant demonstrated a high prevalence of callosities over the knuckles (knuckle pads) of both hands. Knuckle pads were observed in 56% (23/41) of live-chicken hangers, but in no (0/41) workers from other departments (p less than 0.001). Peristalsis in the chicken caecum was investigated by recording the responses of isolated segments of the caecum to either fluid distension using a modified Trendelenburg apparatus or by monitoring circular muscle activity following localized radial distension of adjacent areas. Nitrofurazone, given orally at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg for seven days, decreased the activity of erythrocyte transketolase (TK) and increased the activation of TK by thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP effect %). Nitrofurazone also decreased the feed intake and growth of the chickens, and increased the concentrations of lactate and pyruvate of their blood.
