Women's perceptions of Nurse-Midwives' caring behaviours during perinatal loss in Lilongwe, Malawi: an exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective for this study was to explore women's perceptions of and satisfaction with nursing care they received following stillbirth and neonatal death in villages around a community hospital in Lilongwe. METHODS: This qualitative, exploratory study through a mixture of purposive and snowball sampling, recruited 20 women who had lost a child through stillbirth or neonatal death in the past 2 years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in the privacy of the homes of the women. All interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim and were analyzed using th

Using Multiple Informants to Assess Child Maltreatment: Concordance Between Case File and Youth Self-Report.

To understand the psychosocial implications of child maltreatment, methods used to document prevalence must be clear. Yet, rates of maltreatment found in child self-report are generally inconsistent with data found in case files from state social service agencies. Although self-reports and case file reports of abuse disagree on occurrence of specific events, it is unclear if reporters agree when overall categories of abuse are considered. This study investigated differences between case file and youth report of abuse by examining four types of abuse: physical, sexual, neglect, and psychologica

Parenting Children with Down Syndrome.

This symposium includes twelve personal narratives from parents of children with Down syndrome. These narratives foster better understanding of these parents' experiences of learning that their child has Down syndrome, navigating sometimes labrynthine medical, educational, and social services bureaucracy, and contending with an implicitly-and sometimes explicitly-ableist culture. Four commentaries on these narratives are also included, authored by experts and scholars in bioethics, disability studies, health and science communication, and public advocacy. The goal of this symposium is to call

Guideline for the management of pre-, intra-, and postpartum care of women with a spinal cord injury.

The German Association of the Scientific Medical Societies guideline for pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium in women with a spinal cord injury (SCI) addresses a range of topics from the desire to have a child to different stages of pregnancy and birth. Given that a generally accessible and evidence-based presentation of this complex issue does not yet exist, this new guideline contributes to the standardization of gynecological, obstetric, and maternal care of women with SCI. This guideline aims to provide practice-oriented support for the care and counseling of women in the pre-, intra-, a

Uncertainty, decision-making and trust: lessons from the MMR controversy.

Uncertainty about the likelihood of a particular child coming to harm is a chief concern for parents making decisions about the MMR vaccine, but little attention has been given to the ways that parents cope with this uncertainty. Social science frameworks may help practitioners to understand parental decision making and its implications for community practice. In focus groups and interviews involving 87 parents, three distinct strategies for dealing with uncertainty emerged: reducing complexity through trust, compromise strategies that embrace ambivalence and identifying vulnerable groups. Effects of the ABC Intervention on Foster Children's Receptive Vocabulary: Follow-Up Results From a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Children with histories of maltreatment and disruptions in care are at elevated risk for impairments in early language development, which contribute to difficulties in other developmental domains across childhood. Given research demonstrating associations between parent responsiveness and children's early language development, we examined whether a parenting intervention administered in infancy improved preschool receptive language skills in children involved with the child welfare system. Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) is a 10-session intervention that aims to enhance parent-chil

The Cumulative Effect of Prior Maltreatment on Emotional and Physical Health of Children in Informal Kinship Care.

OBJECTIVE: Millions of children cared for by their grandparents or other kin without a biological parent present are not part of the foster care system. Maltreatment may have precipitated out-of-home care arrangements, but most children in informal kinship care are not being tracked or receiving services. Importantly, the extent of previous child welfare involvement and its association with well-being among this population are not well known. METHODS: Kinship caregivers known to social service and community agencies were recruited for this study. Caregivers who agreed to participate rated the

Children of alcoholic mothers. Growth and motor performance compared to matched controls.

Twenty-one children born 1970-76, selected from 103 children of 30 alcoholic women, were paired to controls matched for sex, age, birth weight and gestational age. The sample (10 girls, 11 boys) was representative of the whole group with regard to weight, length and head circumference at birth. At follow-up (mean age 70 months) the study group was significantly leaner, shorter and had smaller mean head circumference than the control group. The controls had significant catch-up growth from birth to follow-up of weight, height and head circumference to the mean for Swedish children. The study gr

How Parents of Adolescents and Young Adults with Biliary Atresia Surviving with Native Livers Transfer the Responsibility of Medical Treatment to Their Children in Japan.

BACKGROUND: This study examines how the parents of adolescents and young adults with biliary atresia, surviving with their native livers, transfer medical treatment responsibility to their children, and how becoming a living liver transplant donor affects this process. The basis for the study was that becoming a living liver transplant donor may influence the transfer of responsibility. METHODS: A qualitative, descriptive design was employed using a modified grounded theory approach. Data were collected from eight parents from November 2016 to August 2017 through semi-structured interviews co

An analysis of avoidant and approach coping as mediators of the relationship between paternal and maternal attachment security and outcomes in child victims of sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have documented the potential role of nonoffending parent support in promoting recovery of adult survivors following sexual abuse (SA). However, few studies have distinguished the maternal and paternal role and the mechanisms by which quality of the parent-child relationship might foster more positive outcomes in child victims. The purpose of this study was to examine coping strategies as mediators of the link between mother-child and father-child relationship and outcomes following child SA. METHOD: A sample of 505 children (339 girls and 166 boys) ages 6-13 years co

Physically abused children and their families. A 5-year follow-up study.

Thirty-two Coloured families were assessed 5 years after their referral to the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Cape Town, because of the physical abuse of one of their children. Although continuation of the physical abuse was not found at follow-up, in two-thirds of the families the environment was as bad as or worse than it had been in 1977, and emotional abuse prevailed. Many of the parents had separated, and 3 of the children had been placed in foster care. The difficulties involved in managing multiproblem families are discussed.

Difficulty of caring for children in danger or at risk of danger in Var (a French department) by general practitioners and private pediatricians.

BACKGROUND: The exposure of children to situations of danger or risk of danger is a major public health problem. General practitioners (GPs) and pediatricians play an essential role in identification and management of these situations thanks to two procedures: the administrative procedure consists of sending an information of concern ("Information préoccupante" -IP- in French) to the departmental unit of collection, evaluation and processing of information of concern (CRIP in French) for a child at risk of danger; the judicial procedure consists of sending an alert ("signalement" in French) to

Primary and secondary trauma in adoptive parents.

AIMS: Secondary trauma is recognised as one of the negative effects for professionals working with people that have experienced trauma. Research has demonstrated secondary trauma in foster carers but little research has explored trauma symptoms within adoptive parents, facing the emotional impact of parenting a child with adverse early experiences. This study aimed to document the rates of primary and secondary trauma symptoms in adoptive parents. It further explores the association between the extent of current behavioural and emotional challenges and the extent of the child's pre-adoption ad

A population-based case control study of suicide among youth reported for abuse and neglect.

BACKGROUND: Research has indicated an association between child abuse and adolescent suicide. Little population-based information exists, however, about the nature of maltreatment experiences or interactions with the child protection system (CPS). OBJECTIVE: To examine child maltreatment characteristics and system-level responses associated with risk of adolescent suicide. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Linked vital death records and CPS records were used to identify the population of adolescents who died by suicide in California between 2010 and 2017 and who had a history of at least one report

Trends in child protection and out-of-home care.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decades, increased knowledge about childhood abuse and trauma have prompted changes in child welfare policy, and practice that may have affected the out-of-home (OOH) care population. However, little is known about recent national trends in child maltreatment, OOH placement, or characteristics of children in OOH care. The objective of this study was to examine trends in child maltreatment and characteristics of children in OOH care. METHODS: We analyzed 2 federal administrative databases to identify and characterize US children who were maltreated (National Child Abu

Thymus of abused/neglected children.

Forty-six cases of child abuse/neglect autopsied during the period of 1967 to 1990 were investigated. The weight and histological findings of the thymus were compared with those of control children. In most abused and/or neglected children, the weight of the thymus decreased conspicuously. Involution correlated well to the degree and period of maltreatment. In cases without weight loss of the thymus, i.e. spasmodic abuse by a mentally deranged parent or foster parent, a short history of maltreatment was noted. On the other hand, marked involution was observed in cases of prolonged physical abu

Lessons Learned from Co-Designing a Digital Health App for Foster Youth: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Foster youth experience high rates of unmet mental health and substance use needs, while simultaneously facing numerous barriers to accessing and engaging in community-based services. Behavioral intervention technologies (BITs) are promising for overcoming some of the barriers to service engagement, particularly when designed in collaboration with the intended users. OBJECTIVE: This study describes lessons learned from a 31-month process of co-designing FostrSpace (Chorus Innovations, Inc), a BIT to address social determinants of health and behavioral health needs among foster you

Outcomes for children with disability in out-of-home care: Evidence from the pathways of care longitudinal study in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Children with disability are over-represented in out-of-home care (OOHC) in Australia and internationally. Yet we know little about their circumstances, placement types, support needs, and the outcomes of their trajectories and wellbeing through care. OBJECTIVE: We examine the wellbeing and outcomes of children with and without disabilities in OOHC. Youth at the intersection of parental incarceration and foster care: Examining prevalence, disparities, and mental health.

BACKGROUND: While there are various pathways by which children experience parental incarceration or foster care, involvement in either system is associated with adverse health outcomes. Despite co-occurring risk factors for parental incarceration and foster care, little is known about the prevalence or characteristics of youth navigating both of these experiences. OBJECTIVES: This study details the prevalence of youth at the intersection of parental incarceration and foster care, their demographic characteristics, and heterogeneity in their mental health. The Influence of Concerns About a Child's Sexual Orientation on Mental Health Among Parents of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Children in Hong Kong.

Sexual minority stress affects not only lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals, but also their families. Due to the pervasiveness of stigma and discrimination, parents of LGB children often express concerns about the public perception of their child's sexual orientation and its possible impact on children, parents, and families. The concerns are particularly pertinent to parents in Chinese families, where there is a strong bond between parents and children. The present study seeks to understand the different dimensions of concerns among Chinese parents of LGB children and examine how the
