Rapunzel syndrome in a pediatric patient: a case report.

This case report describes a 2.5-year-old girl who was hospitalized with complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting for 2 days. Abdominal ultrasound revealed small bowel-to-small bowel intussusception. Diagnostic laparoscopic-assisted exploration of the abdomen revealed 4 separate intestinal intussusceptions along with multiple dark intraluminal masses within the small intestine. Laparoscopic reduction of the intussusceptions was unsuccessful. Laparotomy allowed palpation of the entire small intestine with extraction of the masses, which were found to be human hair (trichobezoars). The intussus

A novel risk-predicted nomogram for acute kidney injury progression in decompensated cirrhosis: a double-center study in Vietnam.

OBJECTIVES: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is commonly encountered in patients hospitalized for decompensated cirrhosis and is associated with prolonged hospital stays, increased treatment burden, and even mortality. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of and develop a predictive nomogram for AKI in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. METHODS: This cross-sectional, double-center study involved 544 patients hospitalized with decompensated cirrhosis. Acute kidney injury was diagnosed using American Gastroenterological Association's guidelines with one more criterion: an increase i

An online survey on burden of illness among families with post-stem cell transplant mucopolysaccharidosis type I children in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Severe mucopolysaccharidosis type I (also known as Hurler syndrome) is a rare devasting recessive genetic disease caused by the deficiency of an enzyme. Hematopoietic stem cell transplant is the standard of care in the United States, usually conducted before the child is 3 years of age, but little is known about the continued medical and educational needs of the child after transplant. A greater understanding of the burden of illness on the primary caregiver is also needed. Therefore, this online survey sought to gather information on the burden of severe MPS I in the United States

The hospitalization experience and single-parent families. A time of special vulnerability.

Hospitalization of a child is always stressful to families. For families without two parents to share the responsibilities and support one another, the stress is not easily borne. Furthermore, such families are likely to already have additional stresses related to the reason for the family breakup (divorce or death of a parent) and have the limited resources of single-parenthood: financial, social, time, and energy. If nurses and other health care personnel will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these vulnerable families and offer support and workable solutions to relieve specific press

Scurvy in an 18-month-old child mimicking a clinical presentation of rickets.

Scurvy is now considered to be a rare disease in European countries, even among children, but it still exists. We report the case of an 18-month-old boy who was initially hospitalized for a walking disorder and ultimately diagnosed with scurvy. Radiographs were compatible with rickets, but biological analysis ruled out this diagnosis. The vitamin C deficiency was due to an inadequate diet of a young child without any underlying conditions. This child was exclusively breastfed until the age of 17 months and his mother was also likely vitamin C deficient, as she had a diet lacking in fruits and

Nutritional assessment of the child with cancer.

Children with cancer are in need of nutritional support to combat the catabolic effects of malignant tumors and debilitation from surgical or other treatment and complicating infections and to maintain their immune system and other host defenses to combat cancer and infection. Also, growth must be supported in the child. Nutritional assessment should be an integral part of the care of the hospitalized and the ambulatory child. The main components of nutritional assessment are described: medical history; psychocultural history; dietary assessment; clinical examination for signs of deficiency; a

Parental perspectives on hand, foot, and mouth disease among children in Hong Kong: a longitudinal study.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), usually a self-limiting illness for young children, could cause a significant burden for parents because it can take up to 1-2 weeks for a sick child to recover. We conducted a two-wave longitudinal study over one summer peak season (May-July 2014) of HFMD to examine parents' HFMD-related risk perceptions and protective responses. In total, 618 parents with at least one child aged ⩽12 years, recruited using randomly-dialled household telephone calls completed the baseline survey interview, 452 of whom subsequently completed the follow-up survey. Around two

Epidemiology of Hypoxic Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Children Under 5 Years of Age: An Observational Study in Northern India.

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is the leading cause of under-five mortality in India. An increased risk of mortality has been reported in cases of hypoxic pneumonia. METHODS: The primary objective of this study was to assess the proportion of children aged 2-59 months, hospitalized with hypoxic CAP, as well as socio-demographic, clinical, and radiological features associated with it. The secondary objective was to determine the risk of mortality among hospitalized cases of hypoxic CAP. This prospective, observational study was conducted in four districts of Northern India, bet

Isolated skull fractures: trends in management in US pediatric emergency departments.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested that children with isolated skull fractures are at low risk of requiring neurosurgical intervention, suggesting that admission to the hospital may not be necessary in many instances. We seek to evaluate current practice for children presenting to the emergency department (ED) for isolated skull fractures in US children's hospitals. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter cross-sectional study of children younger 19 years with a diagnosis of isolated skull fracture who were evaluated in the ED from 2005 to 2011, using the Pediatric Hea

Children staying in hospital: a research on psychological stress of caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Having a child hospitalized is a stressful event for parents. Previous studies have found increased stress in families with children affected by different kinds of pathologies, and analyzed disease related objective variables producing stress. However, most of these studies recruited caregivers of children with chronic or serious illnesses, and focused on evaluation of objective environmental stressors and did not consider subjective "perception" of stress. The aim of this study was to investigate perception of acute stress in caregivers taking care of children without serious phys

Complications of varicella requiring hospitalization in previously healthy children.

Between January 1, 1981, and December 31, 1990, 83 previously well children and 20 with stable underlying conditions were hospitalized because of complications of varicella. The mean hospital stay was 4.5 days and one child with pneumonia died. Skin or soft tissue infections and pneumonia were the most common complications. Central nervous system complications (15), dehydration (8) and Reye's syndrome (6) accounted for 75% of the nonsuppurative complications. Cellulitis (7), pneumonia (3) and encephalitis (3) were the most common diagnoses among the 20 children hospitalized greater than or equ

[Comparative approach to 2 hospital institutionalization procedures. Application to a sampling of mistreated and neglected children from 0 to 3 years. A monographic study within an institution].

Many studies show that a large number of children hospitalized after numerous placement and successive hospitalizations, are victims of serious physical abuse. On the basis of these previous studies, 73 clinical observations of children victims of physical maltreatment and negligence from 0 to 3 years, are studied in the light of a comparison of two hospital systems: one is unidimensional, the other is pluri-dimensional. The multidisciplinary approach seems to have better results thanks to the way it uses space and the work of a united team. Long term solutions have to be found once the child

An epidemic of kwashiorkor in the South Kasai, Congo.

An outbreak of kwashiorkor of epidemic proportions occurred among Baluba refugees in the South Kasai in late 1960, and all degrees of severity of the disease were seen among both children and adults. Among the associated conditions were anaemia, malaria, dysentery and, in one child, smallpox. Marasmus was observed in only 3% of hospitalized patients.Rapid control of the emergency was made possible through the relief action of the United Nations and co-operating agencies. Except for those most severely affected, who required special fluid and antibiotic therapy, the treatment was mainly dietary
