Parents' Experiences of Their Child's Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse.

A child's disclosure of sexual victimization is a difficult experience for parents and has been associated with traumatization, disbelief, denial, self-blame, and clinical difficulties. To date, most studies on parents' responses have been quantitative assessments of the psychological impact of disclosure on parents. A paucity of research has qualitatively explored mothers' experiences of their child's disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA) and fathers' experiences have been even further neglected. The current study seeks to characterize parents' experiences of their child's disclosure of CSA

Childhood Emotional and Conduct Problems in Childhood and Adolescence Differentially Associated with Intergenerational Maltreatment Continuity and Parental Internalizing Symptoms.

Caregivers' own childhood maltreatment experiences potentiate the risk for psychopathology and perpetration of maltreatment against one's children. In turn, both of these factors may negatively impact children's mental health. The nature of these intergenerational patterns of maltreatment may vary as a function of type of child outcome and may also be influenced by child age and sample characteristics (i.e., involvement of Child Protection Services, CPS). The present study uses a Structural Equational Model to examine cross-sectional relationships between caregiver maltreatment experiences in

Borderline personality disorder and parenting capacity: Understanding child protection population characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes an audit of borderline symptoms, risk factors for maltreatment and types of abuse among parents who completed a parenting capacity assessment at a South Australian health-based child protection service. METHOD: A retrospective case note audit within a 28-month period was conducted and included parents (n = 107) who had completed a Mclean's screening instrument for borderline personality disorder and/or had a psychiatric review with a formal diagnosis. Parents who had a borderline personality disorder diagnosis or endorsed five or more symptoms were categorised

Responding holistically: Does total U.S. state safety net support generosity prevent child maltreatment?

BACKGROUND: Prior studies show that policies strengthening families' economic well-being may help reduce child maltreatment and child protective services (CPS) involvement. However, limited research has examined multiple programs holistically or accounted for substantial cross-state differences in both policy generosity and inclusivity. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the association between total state safety net support and CPS investigation rates at the (state-year) population level, by considering nine major safety net policies that vary in generosity and inclusion across states and over t…

Landscaping the behaviours, drivers and norms influencing the wellbeing of very young adolescents: an exploration of stakeholders' perspectives in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In Nigeria, very young adolescents face overlapping risks (early marriage, GBV, poor SRH knowledge, low HPV vaccination, and limited opportunities for girls) driven by social, economic, and institutional barriers. Understanding these determinants is crucial for targeted interventions. This study explored behaviours and norms shaping VYAs in Nigeria. METHODS: We used a qualitative, multi-state design with social-ecological and norms frameworks plus Five Whys analysis to map behaviours and drivers. Our research in 12 states examined early marriage, gender-based violence, HPV vaccinat

State Child Abuse and Mandated Reporting Policies for Prenatal Substance Use and Congenital Syphilis Case Rates: United States, 2018-2022.

Objectives. To estimate the association of state policies that define prenatal substance use as child abuse and mandate that health care professionals report prenatal substance use to child protective services with congenital syphilis case rates. Methods. We used 2018 to 2022 US data on congenital syphilis case notifications to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. We conducted linear regression with a generalized estimating equation approach to compare congenital syphilis case rates in states with a child abuse policy only, a mandated reporting policy only, and both polices to…

Adolescents as victims of family violence. Council on Scientific Affairs, American Medical Association.

Adolescents experience maltreatment at rates equal to or exceeding those of younger children. Recent increases in reported cases of maltreatment have occurred disproportionately among older children and adolescents. However, adolescents are less likely to be reported to child protective services and are more likely to be perceived as responsible for their maltreatment. Adolescent girls are reported as victims more often than boys, especially in sexual abuse. However, boys may be less likely to be identified or reported and often are abused by nonfamily members. Parents of adolescent victims ha…

Investing in the foundation of sustainable development: pathways to scale up for early childhood development.

Building on long-term benefits of early intervention (Paper 2 of this Series) and increasing commitment to early childhood development (Paper 1 of this Series), scaled up support for the youngest children is essential to improving health, human capital, and wellbeing across the life course. In this third paper, new analyses show that the burden of poor development is higher than estimated, taking into account additional risk factors. National programmes are needed. Greater political prioritisation is core to scale-up, as are policies that afford families time and financial resources to provide

[Child maltreatment and Covid-19: A crisis within a crisis].

The fight against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was carried out through strong restrictive measures, including general population lockdown, which allowed the convergence of risk factors for child abuse. During this period, the French national hotline for children in danger recorded a 56% increase in calls. Calls followed by an alert to departmental child protection services increased by 30%. Through an algorithm created by our team, we showed a 50% increase in the relative frequency of hospitalizations for physical abuse in children aged 0-5 years during the lockdown. This has fueled thinking about

Posttraumatic stress symptom trajectories among children exposed to violence.

Little research has examined the developmental course of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in children. The current study aimed to identify developmental trajectories of PTSS in childhood and to examine predictors of symptom presentation in 1,178 children from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) studies, a consortium of studies focusing on the causes and effects of child maltreatment. Most children had a history of documented reports with Child Protective Services (CPS) and all were identified as living in high-risk environments. Using group-based trajectory model…
