Computer-assisted interventions targeting reading skills of children with reading disabilities - a longitudinal study.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of three computerized interventions on the reading skills of children with reading disabilities in Grade 2. This longitudinal intervention study included five test sessions over 1 year. Two test points occur before the intervention, and three afterwards. The last follow-up was conducted 1 year after the first measurement. One hundred thirty children in Grade 2 participated in the study. Three groups of children with reading difficulties received computerized training programmes: one aimed at improving word decoding skills and phonolog

Brief functional analysis and supplemental feeding for postmeal rumination in children with developmental disabilities.

Rumination is a serious problem demonstrated by some people with developmental disabilities, but previous research has not included a functional analysis and has rarely compared intervention methods during the assessment process. We conducted functional analyses with 2 children who displayed postmeal rumination and subsequently evaluated a supplemental feeding intervention following meals. Results showed that noncontingent food or liquid presentation effectively reduced rumination with both children.

Regional survey of assistive devices use by children with physical disabilities in southern Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing use of assistive devices (ADs) by physically disabled (PD) children, the use rate, number, effects and related services have seldom been studied. Understanding AD utilization is helpful in improving the related services. This study describes the usage of ADs by children with physical disabilities (PDs). METHODS: This regional survey enrolled children with PDs. The children's parents or primary caregivers filled out structured questionnaires regarding the children's use of and need for ADs, the benefits and problems associated with the ADs and related services.

Difficulties in the control of irrelevant visuospatial information in children with visuospatial learning disabilities.

This research tested the hypothesis that children's difficulties in visuospatial working memory (VSWM) may mirror difficulties found with verbal working memory tasks in other categories of children. Two experiments compared the number of correct responses and errors in groups of visuospatial learning disabled children (VSLD) and Controls who were engaged in an active task testing visuospatial working memory. Children were presented with sequences of positions on a 4x4 matrix and were subsequently asked to remember only the last position of each series. In the first Experiment, VSLD children sh

Genetic and environmental influences on orthographic and phonological skills in children with reading disabilities.

Data from identical and fraternal twins were analyzed to estimate the proportions of genetic and environmental influences on group deficits in accuracy and, when available, speed for printed word recognition and for related skills in phonological decoding (PD), orthographic coding (OC), and phoneme awareness (PA). In addition, bivariate genetic analyses were employed to estimate the degree of common genetic influence on group deficits across these different reading and language skills. About half of the group deficits in each of the skills were due to genetic influences, and the genetic origin

Evaluation and long-term treatment of aberrant behavior displayed by young children with disabilities.

We trained parents to conduct functional analyses and functional communication treatment for 28 young children with developmental disabilities who displayed aberrant behavior. Of this sample, 22 parents conducted treatment for at least 3 months and 11 for 1 year. We conducted single-case analyses of the results of assessment and treatment. The functional analysis identified social functions (positive and negative reinforcement) for 86% (24 of 28) of the children. Treatment resulted in a pre/post decrease in aberrant behavior averaging 87% across the range of children, with the greatest decreas

Language abilities in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, reading disabilities, and normal controls.

Research has demonstrated a high prevalence of language impairments (LI) and reading disabilities (RD) in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Since RD is also associated with LI, it is unclear whether the language impairments are specific to ADHD or associated with comorbid RD. The language abilities of ADHD children with and without RD were investigated in a task requiring recall of a lengthy narrative, and in tests assessing knowledge of the semantic aspects of language. The study was conducted with 50 boys--14 ADHD, 14 ADHD + RD, 8 RD, and 14 normal controls, aged

Noradrenergic mechanisms in ADHD children with and without reading disabilities: a replication and extension.

OBJECTIVE: To examine noradrenergic (NA) function in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by replicating and expanding upon a previous finding that ADHD children with and without reading disabilities (RD) differ in plasma levels of the NA metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG). METHOD: Plasma levels of MHPG were compared in ADHD children who were subdivided on the basis of the presence or absence of RD. Subsequently, this replication sample was combined with a previously studied sample to further explore the relationship between plasma MHPG levels and measu

Congruence of behavioral symptomatology in children with ADD/H, ADD/WO, and learning disabilities.

Although evidence generally supports the behavioral differentiation of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADD/H) and attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity (ADD/WO), a growing body of literature suggests that children with learning disabilities (LD) share behavioral symptomatology with children diagnosed as having ADD/WO. The present study examined this issue by comparing parent and teacher behavioral ratings among groups of children diagnosed as having ADD/H, ADD/WO, and LD on symptoms of impulsivity, inattention, and social withdrawal. The subjects were 77 outpatients i

A critique of the application of sensory integration therapy to children with learning disabilities.

Sensory integration (SI) therapy is a controversial--though popular--treatment for the remediation of motor and academic problems. It has been applied primarily to children with learning disabilities, under the assumption that such children (or at least a subgroup of them) have problems in sensory integration to which some or all of their learning difficulties can be ascribed. The present article critically examines the related issues of whether children with learning disabilities differentially exhibit concomitant problems in sensory integration, and whether such children are helped in any wa

The performance of children with language-learning disabilities on two types of cognitive tasks.

The performance of children with language-learning disabilities on two types of cognitive tasks was compared to that of two groups without language-learning disabilities, one matched for mental age and the other for language (vocabulary) age. The first task, Concept Formation, measured one's ability to identify and state the rule for a concept about a set of colored geometric figures when shown instances and noninstances of the concept. The second task, Analysis Synthesis, required the identification and use of a solution key to solve an incomplete logic puzzle. Both tasks involved increases i

FORMATION AND DISTRIBUTION PATTERNS OF FUNCTIONAL INTERHEMISPHERIC BRAIN ASYMMETRY IN CHILDREN WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES.

The study of the dynamics of interhemispheric relations during adaptation to changing environmental conditions, as well as during brain lesions or functional disorders in the activity of any structures, has revealed a predominant increase in the activation of the right hemisphere. Studies by different authors also show that many pathological brain states are characterized by a deviation of the functional brain asymmetry profile from that recorded in a normally functioning CNS. In our research we tried to trace the peculiarities of the formation of individual asymmetry profile under the influen

An umbrella review of barriers, facilitators, and interventions for children and youth with disabilities.

Children and youth with disabilities have fewer opportunities for structured and unstructured active play than their peers without disabilities. This umbrella review explored how active play is defined and perceived among children and youth with disabilities and their adult facilitators, and identified barriers, facilitators, and interventions influencing active play among children and youth with disabilities. A total of 18 review articles were deemed eligible and synthesized guided by the Social Ecological Model (SEM). Among children and youth with disabilities, active play was defined as fun
