Tropical vulnerability and temperate resilience: molecular and physiological insights into cold stress adaptation in oil palm.

Cold stress is a major abiotic constraint limiting the growth and productivity of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Its high sensitivity to chilling causes physiological impairment, metabolic disruption, and reduced oil yield and quality. This review summarizes physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of cold stress responses in oil palm, with comparative insights from rapeseed and soybean. Key pathways, including Ca2+ signaling, MAPK cascades, and the ICE-CBF/DREB network, coordinate membrane lipid remodeling, osmotic adjustment, antioxidant defense, and hormonal regulation. Key genes

Efficacy and safety of amphotericin B formulations: a network meta-analysis and a multicriteria decision analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Despite its broad spectrum, conventional amphotericin B (AB) is associated with serious adverse events. Lipid-based formulations may offer safer options. We aimed to synthesize the evidence of efficacy and safety of AB formulations. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare all available formulations: conventional AB; lipid complex or ABLC; colloidal dispersion or ABCD; liposomal or LAB; AB in Intralipid. Randomized controlled trials were searched in four databases. Cure, fever, chills, nephrotoxicity, death and drug discontinuation were …

Anaesthetising Drosophila for behavioural studies.

The detrimental effect of anaesthesia by chilling or CO(2) on the mating behaviour of Drosophila melanogaster was investigated. Both agents significantly increased copulation latency, even when flies were given 20 h to recover from anaesthesia. CO(2) anaesthesia increased copulation latency more than anaesthesia by chilling. Delivery of a mechanical shock to the flies immediately before testing also increased copulation latency. These experiments demonstrate the sensitivity of insect behaviour to disruption by anaesthesia or rough handling. It is preferable to avoid anaesthetising flies that a

Dynamic switching of phenylpropanoid metabolic flux mediates reversible growth-defense tradeoffs in Salix brachista.

The tradeoff between growth and defense in plants is a core strategy for adaptation, but the mechanisms underlying metabolic flux switching remain incompletely understood. The alpine plant Salix brachista provides an ideal model for studying stress adaptation and metabolic plasticity. Through integrated multi-omics analysis, this study elucidated the transcriptional regulation of phenylpropanoid metabolic flux during the domestication of S. brachista from highland to lowland environments and under chilling stress. Transcriptomic and metabolomic data revealed that plain domestication redirected

Prevalence of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia coli Isolates from Local and Imported Retail Chicken Carcasses.

ABSTRACT: The spread of antibiotic resistance among bacterial strains has been associated with consumption of food contaminated with both pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli isolates in local and imported retail raw chicken meat in Qatar. A total of 270 locally produced (chilled) and imported (chilled or frozen) whole chicken carcasses were obtained from three Hypermarket stores in Qatar. The 216 E. coli isolates recovered from the chicken samples were subjected to antibiotic susceptibility

Giant pyonephrosis related to nephrolithiasis in diabetes woman: A case report.

Pyelonephritis is one of the main systemic bacterial infections encountered in emergency departments. We present a case of diabetes woman aged 30 years referred to our urology department of El-Idrissi Hospital, Kenitra (Morocco) for recurrent episodes of urinary tract infection, multiple urolithiasis, chills, unilateral lower back pain, chills and severe hydroureteronephrosis. Abdominal CT showed a non-functioning obstructed kidney with pyelic and ureteral stones. Nephroureterectomy was performed by extraperitoneal nephrectomy for avoiding any more extended nephrectomy incision or second iliac…

Acinar phenotype is preserved in human exocrine pancreas cells cultured at low temperature: implications for lineage-tracing of β-cell neogenesis.

The regenerative medicine field is expanding with great successes in laboratory and preclinical settings. Pancreatic acinar cells in diabetic mice were recently converted into β-cells by treatment with ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF). This suggests that human acinar cells might become a cornerstone for diabetes cell therapy in the future, if they can also be converted into glucose-responsive insulin-producing cells. Presently, studying pancreatic acinar cell biology in vitro is limited by their high plasticity, as they rapidly lose their phenotype and spont

Improvement in quality and storage ability of rabbit semen by using black or thyme seed as dietary supplementation.

The quality of incubated or chilled rabbit semen is quickly lowered with time due to high-rate production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Black seed (BS) and thyme (THY) are rich sources of natural antioxidants, which may be able to control ROS production and improve semen quality for use in artificial insemination. In this study, V-line rabbit bucks, seven months old, were fed diets supplemented with 50 or 100 g of BS or THY for 60 days. Semen was collected twice weekly. The quality of fresh sperm was measured, and diluted sperm was incubated for up to 12 h. Chilled, diluted sperm, stored a

Refugia, climatic conditions and farm management factors as drivers of adaptation in Nematodirus battus populations.

Parasites are known for their ability to rapidly adapt to changing conditions. For parasitic helminths, changes in climate, along with farming and management practices associated with the intensification of livestock farming, provide novel challenges which can impact on their epidemiology and control. The sustainability of livestock production partially relies on effective control of helminth infection. Therefore, understanding changes in parasite behaviour, and what drives these, is of great importance. Nematodirus battus is an economically important helminth in the UK and temperate regions.

Fever and intracranial pressures.

The effect of fever upon intracranial pressures was determined in the rabbit and cat. In the unanesthetized rabbit and cat, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure was measured via direct cannulation of the lateral cerebral ventricle. Intracranial pressure (ICP) was measured in the rabbit by a subarachnoid screw technique. In all cases, intravenous administration of bacterial pyrogen extracted from Salmonella abortus equi resulted in significant differences from controls in physiological variables measured during the initial "chill" phase of the fever. There was an increase in body temperature, a f

Phase I studies of C. parvum given intravenously: effects of dexamethasone on its biologic and toxic properties.

Three biologic effects were clearly associated with C. parvum infusions: a) granulocytosis with lymphomonocytopenia, b) increase in responsiveness to phytohemmagglutinin and c) increase of specific antibodies to C. parvum antigens. Addition of dexamethasone moderately altered the kinetics of leukocyte changes without affecting other properties. Side effects after intravenous administration of C. parvum (2.5 mg/m2) consisted primarily of chills and fever which lasted for periods of 6-24 hours. Side effects occurred in 77% of the infusions. Addition of dexamethasone (4 mg IVP) reduced significan…

Analysis of malaria clinical-epidemiological predictors in individuals from Brazilian Amazon.

This research aims to determine whether the combination of epidemiological and clinical features can predict malaria. Diagnostic investigation detected 22.3% of individuals with Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) malaria, with significant predominance of the male gender. The malaria triad (fever, chills and headache) had a more expressive frequency (81.1%) in individuals with positive thick blood than those with negative thick blood smear (65.1%), although there was no statistical significance. Among the variables analysed as predictive for positive thick blood smear, it was observed that personal hi…

Azathioprine-induced fever in autoimmune hepatitis.

Underdiagnosis of drug-induced fever leads to extensive investigation and prolongation of hospitalization, and may lead to multiple unnecessary invasive procedures and a wrong diagnosis. Azathioprine is a widely used immunosuppressive drug. We report a case of a 53-year-old female patient diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis treated with azathioprine, who presented to the emergency room with a 6-wk history of fever and chills without other associated symptoms. Since the patient's fever was of unknown origin, she was hospitalized. All treatment was stopped and an extensive workup to explore the …

Abnormal EEG activity in major depressive disorder during musical reward experience.

BACKGROUND: A major clinical feature of depression is anhedonia, which is closely linked to dysfunction of the reward system. But there is a lack of research on musical reward and its neuroelectrophysiological characteristics in depression. Therefore, we investigated these characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: The EEG of 28 MDD and 30 healthy controls (HC) while listening to music was recorded to assess theta power spectral density (PSD), theta phase lag index (PLI), frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), and beta/alpha ratio. RESULTS: The Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire

Prevalence of spinal abnormalities in Chinook salmon smolt and influence of early rearing temperature and growth rates.

Spinal abnormalities can be detected at harvest in around 40% of farmed Chinook salmon in New Zealand. However, whether these abnormalities are present in smolt is unknown. Radiographs of 3,736 smolt were taken immediately prior to transfer to sea water and evaluated for fusions, compressions, vertical shifts, and lordosis, kyphosis and/or scoliosis (LKS). The survey included smolt from two different chilling strategies that had been graded into slow- or fast-growing fish. Overall, 4.34% of Chinook salmon smolt had at least one spinal abnormality, similar to the rates of reported in Atlantic s
