Chlamydia trachomatis is an important human pathogen. The development of vaccines designed to prevent C. trachomatis-associated morbidity would be highly desirable. In the developing world the major goal is the prevention of blindness due to trachoma; in industrialized societies and in some developing countries, the major goal is the prevention of chlamydial salpingitis and its consequences. In early trials of trachoma vaccine composed of a suspension of elementary bodies (the infectious particles), short-lived protective immunity was induced, but deleterious effects, i.e., hyperreactivity to

Seven cows were inoculated with two strains of C. psittaci from bovine origin. Their chlamydial excretion, complement fixing (CF) antibody titer and hormonal pattern, at calving or abortion were monitored. Five of the six pregnant inoculated cows had a pathological parturition, and a CF antibody titer greater than 40 during more than two months post-abortion. Three of them excreted Chlamydiae at calving. The other inoculated pregnant cow, the inoculated non pregnant cow and the three contacts had CF titer less than 40 during the same period. The progesteronemy and the oestradiol 17 beta level

Chlamydia trachomatis inclusion counts on inoculated McCoy cell coverslips were used as an index of the degree of infection of the cervix in women and of the urethra in men with urethritis. High inclusion counts were obtained significantly more often from men than from women, from women with cervical ectopy, and from women who had had recent sexual intercourse. Low inclusion counts were significantly more common in men with a past history of gonococcal urethritis. Higher chlamydial isolation rates in women with gonorrhoea and in women taking the contraceptive pill could not be attributed to a

Two strains of Chlamydia psittaci were isolated from the nasal tract of horses with acute respiratory disease. These 2 isolates (NS 121 and NS 172) were characterized as chlamydia on the basis of their morphology, tinctorial property, growth in chicken embryos, inability to grow on bacterial media and their possession of chlamydial common complement fixing group antigen. They were identified as C. psittaci on the basis of resistance to sodium sulphadiazine. The present strains were not pathogenic to mice and guinea pigs and non-toxigenic. They induced antibodies and caused latent infection in

We examined the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in the cervix and the fallopian tubes of patients with acute salpingitis. Cycloheximide-treated McCoy cells were used as the growth medium. For purposes of comparison, women with infections confined to the lower genital tract and women without signs of genital infections were also studied. C. trachomatis was isolated from the cervix in 19 of 53 patients with acute salpingitis, in one of 18 lower-genital-tract infections and in none of 12 without signs of genital infection. C. trachomatis was recovered from six of the 20 valid specimens from t

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the world, but our understanding of causation is still lacking. A current evidence-based hypothesis proposes that certain infectious agents initiate the neurodegeneration consistent with AD. Two infectious agents correlated to AD pathogenesis are Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn), a respiratory obligate intracellular bacterium, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. Both organisms may predispose susceptible populations to disease m

This study presents the clinical profile of a 74-year-old male patient admitted to the hospital due to a 20-day history of coughing, chest tightness, and dyspnea. Upon admission, the patient presented with fever, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Clinical examination revealed evidence of lung infection, sepsis, and multi-organ dysfunction, alongside abnormal blood gas analysis and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Pathogen testing confirmed Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci), infection. Throughout the treatment course, the patient developed concurrent fungal and viral infections, necessitating

PURPOSE: Chlamydial genital infections constitute significant sexually transmitted infections worldwide. The often asymptomatic status of C. trachomatis (CT) infections leads to an increased burden on human reproductive health, especially in middle- and low-income settings. Early detection and management of these infections could play a decisive role in controlling this public health burden. The objective of this review is to provide an insight into the evolution of diagnostic methods for CT infections through the development of new molecular technologies, emphasizing on -omics' technologies a

Chlamydia trachomatis and C. pneumoniae are members of the Chlamydiaceae family of obligate intracellular bacteria. The former causes diseases predominantly at the mucosal epithelial layer of the urogenital or eye, leading to pelvic inflammatory diseases or blindness; while the latter is a major causative agent for pulmonary infection. On top of these well-described diseases at the respective primary infection sites, Chlamydia are notoriously known to migrate and cause pathologies at remote sites of a host. One such example is the sexually acquired reactive arthritis that often occurs at few w

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review focuses specifically on the mechanisms by which female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, affect Chlamydia trachomatis infections in vivo and in vitro.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent data support previous work indicating that estrogen enhances chlamydial development via multiple mechanisms. Progesterone negatively impacts Chlamydia infections also through multiple mechanisms, particularly by altering the immune response. Conflicting data exist regarding the effect of synthetic hormones, such as those found in hormonal contraceptives, on chlamydial infections.

Gonorrhea and chlamydia are important causes of pelvic inflammatory disease. Chlamydia also causes long-term sequelae, but the role of gonorrhea is unclear. We followed 300 000 reproductive-aged women for 10 years for ectopic pregnancy and tubal infertility; our findings suggest both infections confer similar increases in risk of these outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Although Chlamydia trachomatis infection is common in pregnant women, such infections are rarely encountered in infants. To clarify the recognition of C. trachomatis infections in infants, we analyzed symptoms and signs of perinatally acquired chlamydial infection, together with its long-term prognosis in a large population-based patient series.
METHODS: A search through 2 national health registries covering 1996-2011, a cohort of 933,823 births, yielded 124 children with a microbiologically confirmed C. trachomatis infection. We then reviewed copies of the children's medical reco

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and treatment of rectal Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections among women reporting receptive anal intercourse in a network of sexually transmitted disease or sexual health clinics and estimate the proportion of missed infections if women were tested at the genital site only.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae test results from female patients reporting receptive anal intercourse in the preceding 3 months during visits to 24 sexually transmitted disease clinics from 2015 to 2016. Primary

Chlamydiosis has been described in both free-ranging and captive reptiles. The infection usually manifests as granulomatous inflammation in inner organs such as spleen, heart, lung and liver but might also occur in asymptomatic reptiles. The aim of this study was to investigate and characterise Chlamydia pneumoniae and potential other novel chlamydial infections in the choana and cloaca samples of 137 clinically healthy captive snakes from six private collections. Forty eight samples from 29 animals were found to be positive by a Chlamydiaceae family-specific qPCR. By Chlamydia species-specifi

Chlamydia psittaci and atypical Chlamydiaceae infections are (re)-emerging in chickens. We therefore examined the prevalence of C. psittaci, atypical Chlamydiaceae and their zoonotic transmission on 19 Belgian chicken farms. Atypical Chlamydiaceae were not detected in chickens but 18 out of 19 farms were positive for C. psittaci by culture and PCR. C. psittaci ompA genotypes A and D were discovered. None of the examined humans (n = 31) was infected with atypical Chlamydiaceae, but 29 (93.5%) of them were positive for C. psittaci by culture and PCR. Genotypes A, D and a mixed infection with gen
