Antimicrobial effectiveness of an herbal mouthrinse compared with an essential oil and a chlorhexidine mouthrinse.

BACKGROUND: The authors investigated mouthrinses' antimicrobial effectiveness against predominant oral bacteria, as determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Specifically, they evaluated an herbal mouthrinse, an essential oil rinse and a 0.12 percent chlorhexidine gluconate rinse. METHODS: The authors assessed the inhibitory effects of the three test agents against 40 oral bacteria at concentrations of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 and 512 micrograms per millliter. They inoculated plates containing basal medium and the test agents with suspensions of the test species and in

Use of chlorhexidine varnishes in preventing and treating periodontal disease. A review of the literature.

The literature includes numerous clinical trials to assess the effects of chlorhexidine varnishes in patients with chronic gingivitis and periodontitis. The purpose of this study is to review the literature systematically in order to ascertain the clinical effects of the different chlorhexidine varnishes at the periodontal level. The application of chlorhexidine varnishes seems to have beneficial effects in patients with chronic gingivitis, improving their plaque accumulation and bleeding levels and reducing their gingival index. It is possible to maintain this beneficial effect for prolonged

Clinical evaluation of the use of locally delivered chlorhexidine in periodontal maintenance therapy.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate clinically the effectiveness of a chlorhexidine gluconate chip in sites still showing signs of disease during periodontal maintenance therapy. METHODS: Forty-two maintenance non-smoking patients (previously treated with non-surgical scaling and root planing [SRP]), presenting at least one probing depth (PD) of 5 to 8 mm, and bleeding on probing (BOP) at single-rooted teeth were assigned randomly to two groups: treated with a chlorhexidine gluconate chip (CHIP group) and treated with SRP (SRP group). Patients were assessed for plaque inde

The effect of chlorhexidine and gentian violet on the adherence of Candida spp. to urinary catheters.

Urinary tract infection associated with catheters is the most common infection in the hospital environment. The adherence of microorganisms to the surface is a determining factor in colonization and infection. Antiseptics such as chlorhexidine and gentian violet have been shown to be effective against yeasts, as well as having low toxicity and being low-cost. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether prior treatment of siliconized latex urinary catheters with antiseptics reduces the adherence of yeasts. Two reference strains of C. albicans (ATCC 645448 and ATCC 90028) and six

Effect of different chlorhexidine formulations in mouthrinses on de novo plaque formation.

BACKGROUND: Chlorhexidine (CHX) 0.2% solution, still the golden standard as mouthrinse for the prevention of plaque formation and development of gingivitis, has some limited side-effects such as extrinsic tooth staining, poor taste, taste disturbance, sensitivity changes in tongue, pain, and the content of alcohol. These side effects led to the search of new formulations. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomised, cross-over study, 16 young dental students with a healthy periodontium, abolished all means of mechanical plaque control during 4 experimental periods of 11 days (separated from eac

[Clinical and bacteriologic response to irrigation with a chlorhexidine solution in the treatment of periodontal pockets].

Most of parodontal diseases have a bacterial aetiology. Their episodic and asynchronic evolution differs from site to site. The "in situs" antimicrobian used in the parodontal bags reduces the systemic administration. Various antibiotics or antiseptics slow liberation systems were experimented. Two patients suffering from advanced parodontitis were treated after radicular scraping by subgingival irrigation with a syringe filled with chlorhexidine. Each patient presented at last four parodontal bags more or less six millimetres (6 mm) deep. The following clinical parameters were noted: Patch in

The cost-effectiveness of a new chlorhexidine delivery system in the treatment of adult periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal treatment is costly. The authors assessed the potential economic impact of a new periodontal chemotherapeutic, testing the hypothesis that its adjunctive use would result in reduced periodontal surgical needs. METHODS: An economic model estimated treatment needs following two clinical trials of the adjunctive use of a chlorhexidine, or CHX, -containing chip compared with scaling and root planing, or SRP, alone. Needs were based on periodontal status at nine months and a probabilistic algorithm; costs were assigned on the basis of a national dental survey and an average

Effect on canine oral health of adding chlorhexidine to a dental hygiene chew.

A study to compare the effect of a dental hygiene chew with or without 0.2% chlorhexidine on the development of gingivitis and the accumulation of dental deposits was performed using 11 small dogs. Confirming previous data, the daily addition of a standard chew to a dry diet resulted in significantly less gingivitis and calculus after 3 weeks compared with feeding the dry diet alone. Addition of chlorhexidine to the chew made no difference to the degree of gingivitis or the amount of calculus that accumulated, but did result in significantly less plaque accumulation after 3 weeks. The abrasive

The comparative tea staining potential of phenolic, chlorhexidine and anti-adhesive mouthrinses.

Staining of teeth and mucous membranes is a well-known side-effect with chlorhexidine mouthrinses in which dietary chromogens play an important rôle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a co-polymer anti-adhesive agent would prevent staining by a low concentration chlorhexidine solution. Additionally, the possibility that an essential oil/phenolic rinse product may cause staining was investigated. The rinses studied were the anti-adhesive alone and combined with 0.02% chlorhexidine and the essential oil/phenolic rinse. These were positioned against a positive control rise, 0.2%

Studies of a periodontal tissue lesion in the rat, untreated or treated with chlorhexidine digluconate.

The studies currently reported formed part of an enquiry whose overall objective was to identify a suitable animal model upon which initial screening of compounds and formulations with prophylactic and/or therapeutic potential in periodontitis could be carried out. An earlier study (Rovin et al. 1966) reported that periodontal inflammation could be produced in the conventional laboratory rat by application of a ligature to the molar teeth. The present paper describes the pathological and histo-pathological changes in the periodontium following application of ligatures to the molar teeth of you

Can chlorhexidine gluconate baths reduce fungal colonisation in intensive care unit patients?

BACKGROUND: Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) bathing is widely used in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) to reduce bacterial colonisation, yet its efficacy against fungal skin colonisation, particularly Candida spp., is not well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of daily CHG bathing on Candida colonisation among ICU patients. METHODS: From 2020 to 2022, axillary/inguinal swabs were collected from 675 ICU patients across three units on admission (Day 1, D1), Day 5 (D5) and Day 8 (D8). Patients received daily CHG bathing (either 2% impregnated wipes or 4% liquid solution) from D1 to D5

Chlorhexidine loaded nanomaterials for dental plaque control: enhanced antibacterial activity and biocompatibility.

Chlorhexidine (Chx) is a commonly used antimicrobial agent in dentistry, but its effectiveness can be limited due to rapid clearance, potential cytotoxicity, and insufficient tissue penetration. Nanomaterials have been developed as carriers for Chx, can offer a solution by adapting to environmental changes during disease states and enabling targeted drug delivery. This study explores Chx-loaded nanomaterials, which show enhanced antibacterial properties, promote tissue regeneration, and facilitate drug diffusion. Results show sustained drug release profiles and significantly enhanced antimicro

Chlorhexidine Allergy: Mild Allergic Reactions Can Precede Anaphylaxis in the Healthcare Setting.

Chlorhexidine can cause severe immediate-type allergic reactions such as urticaria, anaphylactic shock or, even, cardiac arrest. We report the case of a patient who developed perioperative anaphylactic shock caused by chlorhexidine 1 year after a postoperative urticarial reaction, which was assumed not to be significant at the time. This case highlights the importance of identifying mild allergy symptoms after exposure to chlorhexidine at the pre-anaesthetic assessment to prevent more severe allergic reactions in future.

Analysis of Multidrug-Resistant Organism Susceptibility to Chlorhexidine Under Usual Clinical Care.

Increasing use of daily chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) bathing can potentially lead to selection for organisms with reduced susceptibility to CHG, limiting the utility of CHG. We examined reduced susceptibility to CHG of fluoroquinolone-resistant gram-negative bacilli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus. No evidence suggested reduced susceptibility to CHG.
