We report the case of a 27-year-old woman who presented with palpitations, hyperemesis, and weight loss. The patient was found to have laboratory values consistent with hyperthyroidism. A serum pregnancy test was positive for an estimated 8-week gestation. After an ultrasound diagnosis of a molar pregnancy, the patient underwent a uterine evacuation with subsequent resolution of her hyperthyroid status. We provide herein the details of this rarely documented presentation of hyperthyroidism in the setting of gestational trophoblastic disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the level of beta-hCG and Human Placental Lactogen (HPL) in maternal serum of normal pregnancies and patients with pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) and to study the clinical significance and effects of them on the pathogenesis of the disease.

Although tubal pregnancy is increasing, ovarian ectopic pregnancy has remained a rare event. However, North American reports suggest an increasing incidence relative to both tubal and term pregnancies. We report an unexpected increase in our practice with five primary ovarian pregnancies over the past year. Current understanding of the aetiological factors, pathogenesis and implications for management are outlined.

Serum hCG, alpha hCG, and beta hCG levels were measured using monoclonal antibodies in women with trophoblastic disease (n = 138) and germ cell neoplasia (n = 123). BACKGROUND: Patients with trophoblastic diseases produce ordinary and irregular forms of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG; e.g., nicked hCG, hCG missing the beta-subunit C-terminal segment, hyperglycosylated hCG, and free beta subunit) that are recognized to differing extents by automated immunometric hCG (or hCG beta) assays. This has led to low or false-negative results and misdiagnosis of persistent disease. False-positive hCG immunoreactivity has also been detected, leading to needless therapy for trophoblastic diseases. Here we compare seven commonly used hCG assays.
