Naturalist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg pioneered research on living and fossil infusoria (including protists and bacteria) since the 1830s by collecting samples from all over the world, thus describing numerous microbes and discussing their effects for the planet and for humankind. This article introduces Ehrenberg as a natural historian of microbes and situates his work in the nineteenth century life sciences with respect to debates about cell theory, evolution, and concepts of disease. I argue that in spite of occurring before these major conceptual innovations of the life sciences, Ehrenb

BACKGROUND: Weber-Christian disease (WCD) is an uncommon, idiopathic disease that is challenging to diagnose and has an unclear treatment protocol. We reviewed thirteen patients with WCD and analyzed their clinical characteristics. The purpose of this article was to improve the understanding of this rare disorder.
METHODS: Thirteen cases of WCD were analyzed retrospectively regarding their clinical manifestation, laboratory results, misdiagnoses, therapy, and outcome.
RESULTS: Of the thirteen patients diagnosed with WCD, the majority were female (male to female ratio, 2:11), with a mean pati

Weber-Christian disease (WCD) is an inflammatory disease whose main histological feature is lobular panniculitis of adipose tissue. The location of panniculitis determines the clinical presentation, being the subcutaneous adipose tissue the most frequent one, followed by liver, spleen, bone marrow and mesenteric adipose tissue. Systemic corticosteroids are first line treatment, but other options should be considered if systemic symptoms are observed or in case of refractory clinical situation. We report herein a case with WCD showing orbital, mesenteric and ileocolonic involvement, which requi

Weber-Christian disease (WCD) is a syndrome characterized by recurrent subcutaneous nodules, fever, occasional lipoatrophy, fatigue, arthralgia, and myalgia. We report a case of WCD associated with rheumatoid arthritis. A 65-year-old woman consulted our outpatient clinic because of bilateral hand swelling. The patient had presented with fever and subcutaneous nodules in her trunk and upper and lower extremities in 1983. At that time, the dermatology department diagnosed this patient as having WCD after biopsy of the nodules demonstrated lobular panniculitis. She has been treated with corticost

OBJECTIVE: To investigate clinical features of childhood Weber-Christian disease (WCD) and the relationship between WCD and virus.
METHODS: The clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, therapy and clinical course of nine patients were reviewed and the viral antigens (EBV, CMV, HSV1 and HSV2) were detected.
RESULTS: They were six males and three females with a median age of 9 years. They included four simple and five systemic WCD, and all presented fever and tender subcutaneous nodules. Other clinical features included hepatomegaly in nine patients, splenomegaly in two, lymphadenhypertr

Weber-Christian disease is an inflammatory disorder of fatty tissue which usually presents with raised red tender nodules in the skin. Although there may be additional systemic upset, there are very few reports of neurological features associated with this condition. We report a patient with biopsy-confirmed systemic Weber-Christian disease in whom a transient partial myelopathy, of probable inflammatory origin, was the most prominent feature. Based on recent reports of the effects of immune mediators on neuronal function, a possible pathogenetic explanation for this syndrome is suggested.

Andreas Christian Bull was a Norwegian district physician who started his medical career in 1867. Contemporary physicians' interests were focused upon the cause of the diseases they encountered. Infectious diseases were dominating. The official opinion was that the cause could be a coincidence, relating to natural phenomena and bad sanitation, though some held the view that epidemic diseases were developing from contagious substances. Bull was an acute observer. In a medical report from 1868, he describes a peculiar epidemic disease diagnosed as meningitis cerebrospinalis acuta. He treated 14

Acinar cell carcinoma of the pancreas is a rare tumor of the exocrine pancreas that may be associated with a characteristic syndrome of disseminated fat necrosis with a bad prognosis. We report a case of this tumor occurring in a 63 year-old man who presented with polyarthralgia and panniculitis of the legs. The histological features and the differential diagnosis of acinar cell carcinoma are discussed.

A case of systemic panniculitis (Weber-Christian disease) presenting with myalgia as the main clinical symptom is reported. There was no laboratory or electromyographic evidence of myogenic disturbance. Biopsy of the painful muscle revealed nonspecific mononuclear cell infiltration in the epimysial fatty tissue, while the muscle fibers remained intact. Prednisolone was dramatically effective in alleviating the myalgia as well as the other signs of panniculitis. The present case may indicate that myalgia in systemic panniculitis is one manifestation of its systemic connective tissue involvement

A patient with chronic systemic Weber-Christian disease who was treated with hydroxychloroquine developed cardiac dilatation with congestive heart failure. Endomyocardial biopsy demonstrated myocyte degeneration and interstitial fibrosis, but no typical features of chloroquine induced cardiomyopathy. Clinical symptoms of congestive heart failure also were recognized in 7 of the 11 reported autopsy cases of Weber-Christian disease having cardiac involvement. This involvement can affect the pericardium and the myocardium.

A case is presented of a 28-year-old man with Hand-Schüller-Christian's disease whose initial manifestations were skull bones lesions and a diffuse interstitial fibrosis. Three years later the patient developed diabetes insipidus without changes in the hypothalamic-hypophysial region on computed tomography. Some features of the clinical picture are discussed.

A 47 year old female developed multifocal Langerhans cell granulomatosis (Hand-Schuller-Christian disease) manifesting as papulo-pustular, nodular, crusted and scaly lesions, xanthelasma, ulceration of gingival mucosa with loss of teeth, vaginal granulomatosis, diabetes insipidus, multiple osteolytic bone lesions and honeycombing of the lungs. Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Treatment with prednisolone 45 mg methotrexate 2.5 mg daily, led to regression of lesions, reduction of bone of partial clearance of lung lesions and osteolytic bone lesions. However, the patient died due to widesprea

It has been proposed that idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis may be a consequence of 'healed' retroperitoneal lesions of systemic Weber-Christian disease. However ureteric obstruction which is the hallmark of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, has not been described in systemic Weber-Christian disease. We report a patient with systemic Weber-Christian disease who, during a relapse, developed bilateral ureteric obstruction which resolved when the Weber-Christian disease remitted. The radiological appearances were consistent with a diagnosis of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, but the cli

A case of nodular panniculitis with liquefaction in a 58-year-old woman patient is reported. It seems that Pfeiffer-Weber-Christian disease and nodular panniculitis with liquefaction are varying expressions of the same disease entity. The relationship to cases reported in the literature is discussed.
