DESIGN: Prospective evaluation of 62 consecutively admitted patients with cancer.

Functional and morphological alterations were compared in guinea pig cochleae treated acutely (7.5 mg/kg x 2) and chronically (1.5 mg/kg x 10) with cisplatin. Nephrotoxicity was studied in 47 patients who received combined chemotherapy with cisplatin (DDP, 50-100 mg/m2) as the chief agent. The treatment was given every 3-4 weeks with vigorous hydration and forced diuresis. The renal tubular toxicity was evaluated by urinary beta 2 microglobulin (beta 2-MG). Combination chemotherapy that included bleomycin and cisplatin was administered to 45 evaluable patients (30 with cervix carcinoma and 15 with germ cell tumors).
