Effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral group therapy for panic disorder in a specialized unit.

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy for panic disorder (PD) with or without agoraphobia is well established, but few data exist on its effectiveness using a group format. The goal of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of group CBT in a sample of PD patients in a specialized unit. METHODS: Treatment consisted of nine weekly group sessions. Patients with PD (n=56) were assessed at baseline, after the treatment and in one and three-months followups. RESULTS: There were significant reductions in panic/agoraphobia symptoms and related variables between baseline

Emotional aspects of anorexia nervosa: results of prospective naturalistic cognitive behavioral group therapy.

BACKGROUND: Anorexic girls have difficulties in handling their emotions. We examined emotional problems of adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa (AN) during the course of cognitive behavioral group therapy (G-CBT). METHODS: Overall, 29 girls with AN (age 13-17 years) participated in four groups of manual based G-CBT. We assessed the body mass index (BMI), eating behavior psychopathology, emotions, depression, hedonistic activities, self-care and-efficacy, social phobia, sense of coherence (SOC), and alexithymia before, during and up to 1 year after therapy. RESULTS: Out of 29, 16 (55 %, int

Changes in quality of life following cognitive-behavioral group therapy for panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Data about quality of life (QoL) are important to estimate the impact of diseases on functioning and well-being. The present study was designed to assess the association of different aspects of panic disorder (PD) with QoL and to examine the relationship between QoL and symptomatic outcome following brief cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT). METHOD: The sample consisted of 55 consecutively recruited outpatients suffering from PD who underwent CBGT. QoL was assessed by the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) at baseline, post-treatment and six mont

An open trial of a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral group therapy for anxiety disorder.

Transdiagnostic models of anxiety, and cognitive-behavioral treatments based on these models, have been gaining increased attention in recent years. Preliminary efficacy studies generally suggest strong treatment effects, although few of these studies have examined to what extent treatment effects are similar across clients with different anxiety disorders. The purpose of the current study was to examine the efficacy of a 12-week transdiagnostic group cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders and compare outcome across diagnoses. Mixed-effect regression modeling of data from 52 partic

[Treatment effects of combined cognitive behavioral therapy with parent training in hyperkinetic syndrome].

In the past cognitive behavioral treatment concepts failed to demonstrate their clinical effectiveness in the treatment of ADHD children. We combined a cognitive treatment package (CBT) with a special focus on self-instructional and self-management skills with a subsequent parent management training (PMT) in order to reduce academic problems and oppositional/aggressive behavior. 18 children with a diagnosis of ADHD combined type and Oppositional Defiant Disorder participated in the study. In an A-B study design the effects of a 12 weeks treatment phase (6 weeks CBT; 6 weeks PMT) were compared

A multicenter comparison of cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective psychotherapeutic treatment for bulimia nervosa. One exception was a study that suggested that interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) might be as effective as CBT, although slower to achieve its effects. The present study is designed to repeat this important comparison. METHOD: Two hundred twenty patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa were allocated at random to 19 sessions of either CBT or IPT conducted over a 20-week period and evaluated for 1 year after treatment in a multisite study. Long-term outcome for patients with panic disorder treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Psychological approaches to panic disorder with agoraphobia have concentrated on agoraphobic avoidance behavior associated with panic attacks through use of exposure-based methods. These have proven reasonably successful but few patients are "cured," and a number continue to experience anxiety and panic. More recently, treatments with the goal of reducing panic attacks directly have been developed. These are based on a new psychobiological model of panic disorder that suggests some people are predisposed to panic, particularly when under stress. A minority develop anxiety about the possibility

A cost-utility analysis of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy for major depressive disorder relapse prevention in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic condition with high relapse rates affecting patients and health systems. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) are strategies for relapse prevention, but their comparative long-term cost-effectiveness remains unclear. METHODS: We developed a cohort-based Markov model with three health states, depressive episode, remission, and death, to compare MBCT and CBT in adults with MDD. The model used a lifetime horizon, six-month cycles, with healthcare payer and societal perspectives. Costs included d…

Effectiveness of Virtually Delivered Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive-behavioral therapy for ARFID (CBT-AR) has demonstrated preliminary efficacy in open trials, but no studies have examined its effectiveness in real-world settings. We evaluated the effectiveness of virtually delivered CBT-AR for adults with ARFID and examined whether baseline symptom severity within each ARFID profile predicted corresponding symptom improvement. METHOD: N = 549 adults with ARFID received CBT-AR through Equip Health. We collected weight and Pica, ARFID, and Rumination Disorder Interview-ARFID Questionnaire data at intake and throughout treatment. Ordinary l

The Relationship Between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Post-Traumatic Growth: A Systematic Review.

Background: Post-traumatic growth (PTG) refers to positive psychological changes resulting from the struggle with highly challenging or traumatic life events. Psychosocial interventions have demonstrated efficacy in promoting psychological well-being in the aftermath of traumatic experiences. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is among the most extensively studied such interventions, aligning with the PTG model's prerequisites for growth. Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy of CBT and CBT-based interventions in promoting PTG. Methods: A systematic review was…

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia among heavy-drinking veterans: a randomized pilot trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Two in five Veterans report symptoms of insomnia, with higher rates among those who drink heavily. Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) has demonstrated efficacy among those with Alcohol Use Disorder, abstinence is often considered a prerequisite for treatment, leaving its impact unclear among those who are actively drinking. This trial tested the efficacy of CBT-I among heavy-drinking Veterans with insomnia (#NCT03804788). METHODS: Veterans from across the United States were randomly assigned to CBT-I or sleep hygiene control. Participants completed re…

Feasibility of a Cognitive-Behavioral Couple Therapy Intervention for Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder.

Female sexual interest/arousal disorder (SIAD) is strongly influenced by interpersonal factors; however, there are no empirically-supported, couple-based sex therapy interventions for this disorder. This pre-registered study tested the feasibility of a cognitive-behavioral couple therapy (CBCT) intervention for SIAD. A sample of 19 couples in which a female partner was diagnosed with SIAD completed a 16-session CBCT intervention delivered online by therapists with PhD-level training in clinical psychology. Women with SIAD (Mage = 43.47, SD = 12.76) and their partners (Mage = 43.74, SD = 11.68)

Dose-response relationship in cognitive behavioral therapy for depression: A nonlinear metaregression analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence on the optimal "dose" of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating major depressive disorder is sparse. This analysis aimed to evaluate the dose-response curve in CBT using a nonlinear approach, whereby "dose" was defined as number of treatment sessions. The dose-response curve of CBT was compared to other psychotherapies and pharmacological treatments for depression. METHOD: A systematic review and metaregression analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the efficacy of CBT in adults with acute depression was conducted. Treatment arms examining other…
