[Obstructive colitis induced by laxatives during colonoscopy preparation after ischemic enteritis and improved by endoscopic fecal removal: a case report].

An 84-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with melena was admitted to the hospital with ischemic colitis. During the preparatory procedure for colonoscopy, he reported severe abdominal pain and exhibited decreased blood pressure. Obstructive colitis was suspected, and a colonoscopy was performed. A large amount of hard stool was found in the sigmoid colon, with ulcers and erosions exposing the submucosal layer observed on the proximal side. The endoscope was able to pass through the ileocecal region, and the patient's symptoms subsequently improved. The decline in intestinal function follo

Unusual Case of Ischemic Colitis Caused by Low-Dose Sumatriptan Therapy in a Generally Healthy Patient After Strenuous Physical Activity.

Ischemic colitis refers to an inflammatory condition of the large bowel caused by ischemia. It usually presents with an acute onset abdominal pain followed by hematochezia. It can occur as a result of arterial occlusion (embolic or thrombotic), venous thrombosis, or hypoperfusion of mesenteric circulation secondary to dehydration, surgery, or medications. Herein, we present an unusual case of sumatriptan-induced ischemic colitis. Sumatriptan succinate is a selective serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine-1) receptor agonist that is usually prescribed for refractory migraine headaches. This is a 59-yea

Atypical cause of intractable diarrhea in a hemodialysis patient, masked by Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea and ischemic colitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) most commonly complain of gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea. Diarrhea negatively affects patient quality of life and has miscellaneous etiologies, such as Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) and ischemic colitis. However, it is sometimes extremely difficult to determine the true etiology given the comorbidities and complications the patients have. A rare cause of diarrhea is ulcerative colitis (UC), which commonly affects the rectum and proximal colon in a continuous fashion. UC with rectal sparing or segmental di

Synchronous Quadruple Colon Cancer With Two Lesions Previously Obscured by Ischemic Colitis, Plus Bladder Cancer and Thymoma: A Case Report.

Synchronous quadruple colorectal cancer (CRC) is extremely rare without genetic alterations. We present a case of synchronous quadruple CRC with 2 lesions previously obscured by ischemic colitis. A 73-year-old woman was admitted to our emergency department. An abdominal computed tomography revealed ischemic colitis and irregular wall thickening of the sigmoid colon and sigmoid-descending junction, suspicious of 2 colon cancers. A colonoscopy examination revealed a fungating mass 20 cm from the anal verge, as well as ischemic colitis spanning the mucosa from the sigmoid colon to the transverse

Ischemic Colitis with Perforation Occurring 15 Months after Colorectal Cancer Surgery in a Patient with Severe Heart Failure: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic colitis is a common gastrointestinal disorder. However, severe cases requiring surgical intervention are rare. Severe ischemic colitis is particularly uncommon following surgery for colorectal cancer, with a reported incidence of only 0.7%. To our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of ischemic colitis leading to perforation in the late postoperative period following colorectal cancer surgery. Herein, we report a rare case of ischemic colitis that developed following surgery for transverse colon cancer and progressed to colonic perforation despite conservative

Can Thrombosed Abdominal Aortic Dissecting Aneurysm Cause Mesenteric Artery Thrombosis and Ischemic Colitis?-A Case Report and a Review of Literature.

Background/Objectives: Ischemic colitis, typically caused by thrombosis or reduced blood flow in the inferior mesenteric artery, is the most common ischemic lesion at the colorectal level. This case contributes to existing knowledge by highlighting the rare co-occurrence of a thrombosed aortic aneurysm and ischemic colitis, pointing to a direct vascular etiology rather than a multifactorial or idiopathic cause. Methods: A thorough electronic search was conducted on PubMed to identify risk factors and etiological determinants of ischemic colitis. Results: We present the case of a 70-year-old ma

Differentiation of Escherichia fergusonii and Escherichia coli Isolated from Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease/Ischemic Colitis and Their Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns.

Genotypically, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis clearly differentiates between species. However, species delineation between Escherichia fergusonii and Escherichia coli is much more difficult and cannot be distinguished by 16S rRNA gene sequences alone. Hence, in this study, we attempted to differentiate E. fergusonii and E. coli isolated from faecal samples of disease-associated Korean individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)/ischemic colitis (IC) and test the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolated strains. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using the adenylate kinase (adk

Sheng-Xue-Xiao-Ban Capsule-induced ischemic colitis and pulmonary embolism in an idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura patient: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Sheng-Xue-Xiao-Ban Capsule (SXXBC), as a classic Chinese traditional medicine comprised of natural indigo, cortex moutan, forsythia, herba agrimoniae, and licorice, exhibits a heat-clearing and detoxicating function, hemostasis, and stasis dissipation, which is widely applied to treat idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). However, report on ischemic colitis and pulmonary embolism induced by SXXBC therapy is never disclosed. We report the case of an ITP patient who received SXXBC for ascending platelets that then induced ischemic colitis and pulmonary embolism. CASE DESCRIPTIO

Gangrenous Ischemic Colitis Due to Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia, and Myelofibrosis in a 62-year-old Man Suffering from ESRD; Case Report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ischemic colitis, also rare, is the most common ischemic pathology of the digestive system. It usually affects the ageing population and those suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD), hypertension, and heart failure. Its incidence varies from 4.5 to 44 cases per 100,000 annually. CASE PRESENTATION: We have reported a case of gangrenous colitis in a 62-year-old man suffering from acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) and myelofibrosis. He had hypertension and ESRD due to obstructive uropathy from seven years ago in his past medical history. His recurrent consti

Recurrent stent thrombosis in a patient with acute coronary syndrome and ischemic colitis: between life-threatening thrombosis and life-threatening bleeding.

Complete blood count should always be considered to tailor diagnosis and appropriate management in patients with acute ischemic heart disease. We present a challenging case of recurrent acute coronary syndrome, in the context of very high thrombotic risk due to concomitant inflammatory disease. Although no general guidelines exist for the switch between antiplatelet agents, particularly in the acute setting, in specific cases, the availability of different orally- and i.v.-acting agents and platelet function tests may allow to discriminate among multiple possible mechanisms of drug failure or

Successful Laparoscopy-Assisted Resection of the Descending Colon in a Patient with Multiple Large Renal Cysts and Stricture of the Colon due to Ischemic Colitis.

Large pathological structures in the abdominal cavity curb the application of laparoscopic surgery. This case report describes a successful laparoscopy-assisted colectomy for benign colon disease in a patient with multiple large renal cysts. An 82-year-old man was referred to our department for treatment of stenosis of descending colon secondary to ischemic colitis. An abdominal computed tomography revealed multiple large renal cysts occupying a large proportion of the peritoneal cavity. To minimize the postoperative recovery period, laparoscopic surgery was planned despite the renal cysts. Af

Right colonic involvement is associated with severe forms of ischemic colitis and occurs frequently in patients with chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with severe outcome in patients with ischemic colitis. METHODS: The files of 60 consecutive inpatients (34 women, 26 men, mean age 67 yr) with ischemic colitis were reviewed. The following data were analyzed: age, sex, smoking, medications, history of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, chronic renal failure and hemodialysis, the time elapsed between the first symptoms and the diagnosis, and the site and extension of their colonic involvement. Patients were divided into two groups according to outcome: those with sever

Small Bowel Ischemia and Ischemic Colitis Secondary to Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura in a Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematous: A Rare Clinical Entity.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare, life-threatening hematologic disorder characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and organ dysfunction. This report highlights a rare case of small bowel ischemia and ischemic colitis caused by TTP in a 35-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), hypertension, and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis. She presented with severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and bloody bowel movements. Diagnosed through CT, EGD, and colonoscopy and confirmed by ADAMTS13 levels, she was treated with plasma exch

Emphasis on Early Identification of Risk Factors to Curtail High Mortality Involved With Ischemic Colitis (IC) After Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Repair.

Ischemic colitis (IC) is one of the most feared complications after abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Though the complication is seen in only a handful of total repairs, the mortality rates after IC is very high. Due to infrequent presentation, attending doctors may overlook this possibility leading to a delay in diagnosis. Open repair and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) are the two most common methods used for repairing aneurysms and both of these procedures have their implications in the development of IC. While the incidence of IC was greater after open repair, it also harbored mo

Sigmoid intramural pH for prediction of ischemic colitis during aortic surgery. A comparison with risk factors and inferior mesenteric artery stump pressures.

We compared intramural pH (pHI) measured through a silicone balloon placed in the lumen of the sigmoid colon with risk factor analysis and inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) stump pressures as predictors of ischemic colitis in 34 patients undergoing elective or emergency operations on the abdominal aorta. All patients had preoperative and postoperative flexible sigmoidoscopy, IMA stump pressure measurements, and serial measurements of pHI. Logistic regression analysis showed that aortic aneurysm, age, and stenosis of the superior mesenteric artery were the only risk factors that bore a statistic

Incidence of ischemic colitis and serious complications of constipation among patients using alosetron: systematic review of clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic colitis and serious complications of constipation have been reported in association with the use of alosetron, which is approved for women with severe diarrhea-predominant IBS who have failed conventional therapies. This systematic review calculated the incidence of these adverse events in alosetron-using patients in clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance. METHODS: A panel of experts in epidemiology and functional bowel disorders reviewed clinical trial report forms and FDA MedWatch forms of each reported case of ischemic colitis or serious complications of const

Pathology image of the month. Black esophagus detected at autopsy in a patient with abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. DIAGNOSIS: Acute esophageal necrosis, ischemic and pseudomembranous colitis.

A 73-year-old African-American male was transported to the emergency department due to what emergency personnel described as "coffee ground emesis." He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. An unlimited autopsy examination was conducted under authorization of the coroner's office. Medical record review revealed that the decedent had been discharged from the hospital just one day prior to his death following a three-day admission for abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and a 22-lb unintentional weight loss. Medical history documented hypertension, chronic obstructive lung disease, and a 57-pa
