Objectives. To examine patterns of community health worker (CHW) core roles within the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program through a latent class analysis (LCA). Methods. We used data from a CHW self-report survey (n = 689) conducted in the United States during February and March 2024. LCA was used to examine whether distinct classes existed according to patterns of reported engagement in CHW core roles in the CCR program. Results. The study findings supported a 2-class model: (1) "low assessment and evaluation CHWs," which represented 52.6% of C

BACKGROUND: Posterior communicating artery (PcomA) aneurysms are more likely to recanalize than anterior communicating artery (AcomA) aneurysms. However, it is still unclear whether the recanalization rate of these aneurysms is a result of involvement from the fetal posterior cerebral artery (fPCA) in PcomA aneurysms and variation of the unilateral A1 segment in AcomA aneurysms. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively evaluate the different recanalization rates between PcomA aneurysms with fPCA and AcomA aneurysms with a variation of the unilateral A1 segment.
METHODS: We retrospectiv

Part II. A professionally-managed telephone survey was undertaken to assess the community-perceived importance of correcting various dentofacial anomalies. The sample included 505 respondents, aged eighteen and over, from metropolitan and non-metropolitan households across the state of Victoria. The sample distribution had a 95 per cent confidence limit with a 5 per cent margin of error and closely matched the known population distributions for age, sex and geographical location. This article forms part two of a series. It was found that the correction of functional problems such as "difficult

Objectives. To examine the roles and activities performed by community health workers (CHWs) involved in the national Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program and examine differences based on setting characteristics. Methods. We used data from a CHW self-report survey (n = 689) conducted February through March 2024 in the United States. We ran a series of ordered logistic regression models to examine the association between setting characteristics (i.e., type of organizational setting, organizational experience with CHWs, and populations of focus) and

BACKGROUND: The control of Buruli ulcer (BU) relies on early case detection to improve disease outcomes. While lesion photographs are currently used in health communication materials, they have many drawbacks. Medical illustrations, though proven effective in many contexts, remain unutilised for skin NTDs. We therefore aimed to assess their acceptability in health communication materials in BU-endemic districts of Ghana.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted eleven focus group discussions, using a guide developed from the PICO framework and the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (T

BACKGROUND: Community stigma toward people with opioid use disorder (OUD) can impede access to harm reduction services and treatment with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Such community OUD stigma is partially rooted in community-level social and economic conditions, yet there remains a paucity of large-scale quantitative data examining community-level factors associated with OUD stigma. We examined whether rurality, social inequity, and racialized segregation across communities from four states in the HEALing Communities Study (HCS) were associated with 1) greater perceived communi

BACKGROUND: There is a growing body of evidence for the role that communities can have in producing beneficial health outcomes. There is also an increasing recognition of the effectiveness and success of community-led interventions to promote public health efforts. This study investigated whether and how community-level measures facilitate a community-led intervention to achieve improved HIV outcomes.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of survey data from a cluster randomised trial in 40 rural communities in Zimbabwe. The survey was conducted four months after the intervention was initiate

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a severe neurological disorder with huge psychological, social, and economic consequences, including premature deaths and loss of productivity. Sub-Saharan Africa carries the highest burden of epilepsy. The management of epilepsy in Cameroon remains unsatisfactory due to poor identification of cases and a limited knowledge of the distribution of the disease. The objective of this study was to determine whether community drug distributors (CDDs) - volunteers selected by their communities to distribute ivermectin against onchocerciasis and who have been proven efficient t

The last case of wild poliovirus in Ethiopia was reported in 2014. Until the disease is eradicated globally, the risk of reimportation remains high. In 1999, the CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) began its community-centered polio eradication efforts in Ethiopia, using community volunteers (CVs) to ensure that no child has missed polio vaccine. This article documents the efforts of CVs and highlights innovative strategies, successes, and contributions. Qualitative data were collected from the CGPP implementation areas in 85 border woredas (districts) of Benishangul-Gumuz; Gambella; Oromia; South

Network community detection is usually considered as an unsupervised learning problem. Given a network, the aim is to partition it using some general-purpose algorithm. In this paper, we instead treat community detection as a hypothesis testing problem. Given a network, we examine the evidence for community structure in the observed network compared to a network generated by a null model. To do this, we define an appropriate test statistic, analogous to a z-score, and discuss several null models derived from maximizing entropy under different constraints. These constraints are imposed in expec

Communication is foundational to clinical and leadership excellence. In patient care, listening, empathy, and trust prevent errors. In complex health systems, leaders who move beyond data transmission, toward creating a cohesive narrative, help teams unite around purpose. Drawing on cognitive science and organizational theory, this article positions storytelling as a core leadership tool that connects metrics to lived experience, mobilizes action, and humanizes policy.

Communication support for patients with neurological disorders extends beyond high-technology communication aids. It also includes non-aided and low-technology methods and requires flexible selection and the combined use of these methods depending on the situation. Gaining experience with various communication strategies in a stepwise manner from an early stage enables the smoother introduction of advanced communication devices when necessary. Effective support must be tailored to the disease stage, as communication abilities and needs change over time. In this context, collaboration among mul

BACKGROUND: Pediatric asthma remains a leading global health concern and disproportionately affects children in low-income and environmentally burdened communities. Chemical and non-chemical stressors, including air pollution, allergens, climate-related events, and psychosocial stress, contribute to asthma exacerbations and hinder effective disease management.
OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the intersection of childhood asthma and community resilience, emphasizing the influence of environmental exposures, public health infrastructure, and targeted interventions on pediatric respiratory outco

BACKGROUND: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a biomarker for myocardial injury. However, macrotroponin, a complex of cTnI and endogenous cardiac troponin autoantibodies, may artefactually elevate cTnI levels with potential to mislead clinicians, leading to inappropriate investigation and management.
AIM: To examine the prevalence and trajectory of macrotroponin in participants of the prospective community-based SCreening Evaluation of the Evolution of New Heart Failure (SCREEN-HF) study cohort.
METHODS: Inclusion criteria were age ≥ 60 years with one or more self-reported ischaemic or other hear

In public health, meaningful community engagement has consistently been linked to improved access to timely diagnosis, strengthened treatment adherence, reduced stigma, and better overall health outcomes, particularly among marginalized and underserved populations. Effective engagement fosters trust, enhances service utilization, and promotes sustained care-seeking behaviour. However, genuine empowerment extends beyond simple participation in health programs; it encompasses the ability of communities to influence local governance processes and address broader social determinants such as nutrit

Community nurses are often the common link with people in the community with healthcare services. Community nurses are involved in the care of people living with a temporary or permanent stoma and might be asked specialist questions of which they may feel uncertain of appropriate responses. This article describes some basic facts about stoma as well as specialist dietary considerations; which can be used to improve symptoms such as constipation as well as how to prevent issues such as a food bolus obstruction. An increased understanding of stoma-related dietary needs among community nurses wil

PURPOSE: Risk communication is an integral aspect of shared decision-making and evidence-based patient choice. There is currently no recommended way of communicating risks and benefits of cataract surgery to patients. This study aims to investigate whether the way this information is presented influences patients' perception of how risky surgery will be.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Two-arm parallel randomised study and patients referred for cataract surgery were assigned to receive information framed either positively (99% chance of no adverse effects) or negatively (1% chance of adverse effects).

IMPORTANCE: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) results in approximately 1.4 million emergency department visits, 740 000 hospitalizations, and 41 000 deaths in the US annually.
OBSERVATIONS: Community-acquired pneumonia can be diagnosed in a patient with 2 or more signs (eg, temperature >38 °C or ≤36 °C; leukocyte count <4000/μL or >10 000/μL) or symptoms (eg, new or increased cough or dyspnea) of pneumonia in conjunction with consistent radiographic findings (eg, air space density) without an alternative explanation. Up to 10% of patients with CAP are hospitalized; of those, up to 1 in 5 req
