Delivering high-quality family planning services in crisis-affected settings I: program implementation.

In 2012, about 43 million women of reproductive age experienced the effects of conflict. Provision of basic sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning, is a recognized right and need of refugees and internally displaced people, but funding and services for family planning have been inadequate. This article describes lessons learned during the first 2.5 years of implementing the ongoing Supporting Access to Family Planning and Post-Abortion Care in Emergencies (SAFPAC) initiative, led by CARE, which supports government health systems to deliver family planning services i

Involving community members in designing behavioural weight management programmes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Involving community members when developing health programmes can improve intervention outcomes. We undertook a scoping review to describe how community members contributed to the development of Behavioural Weight Management Programmes (BWMPs). Different terms have been used to describe this process, including co-design, co-production, Community-Based Participatory Research, or Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement. Our aim was to describe: (1) at what stage(s) communities were involved (e.g. planning, delivering and/or evaluating); (2) what level of involvement they had (e

Analysis of Spinal Dysfunction in Breast Cancer Survivors with Lymphedema.

The US is facing a growing epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with over 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis reported in 2021 and again in 2022. This public health crisis disproportionately affects youth and racial and ethnic minority communities, exacerbating barriers to accessing sexual health services. Untreated STIs can lead to severe health consequences, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and increased risk of HIV transmission and acquisition. Managed care organizations (MCOs) within Medicaid play a pivotal role in improving sexual heal

Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) contribution in strengthening public health laboratories systems in the African region.

BACKGROUND: The laboratory has always played a very critical role in diagnosis of the diseases. The success of any disease programme is based on a functional laboratory network. Health laboratory services are an integral component of the health system. Efficiency and effectiveness of both clinical and public health functions including surveillance, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, research and health promotion are influenced by reliable laboratory services. The establishment of the African Regional polio laboratory for the Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) has contributed in supporting count

Training medical students to communicate with a linguistic minority group.

Effective communication is central to a successful physician-patient relationship. Communication is usually enhanced when the linguistic and cultural attributes of patients are incorporated in health care delivery. With this purpose in mind, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa has developed a French-language stream to train future physicians for the francophone minority population of Ontario. As part of this project, a communication skills laboratory was created for francophone students in 1996, since all three tertiary care teaching hospitals operated in English only. The labo

[Community health documentation as an instrument for further developing recommendations in community health].

The local health conference in a North Rhine-Westphalian county of Germany has made proposals to improve immunisation rates against measles, mumps and rubella. Another target was to prevent decubitus by elderly patients in hospitals, nursing homes and in the outpatient nursing. Local public health reports were the basis for the development of (local) health targets in the health conference. The data of 12,830 immunisation papers from 11-19-year old students showed immunisation rates against measles, mumps and rubella from 44% to 14% depending on the type of school. Virus hepatitis B immunisati

Strengthening of mass drug administration implementation is required to eliminate lymphatic filariasis from India: an evaluation study.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The mass drug administration (MDA) is one of the strategies to eliminate lymphatic filariasis in India. Eleven districts are endemic for the disease in Madhya Pradesh state of India, which conduct MDA activities annually. A mid-term evaluation was conducted with the objectives to review the progress of the single dose of di-ethyl-carbamazine (DEC) administration, and to understand the functioning of the programme to recommend mid-term amendments. METHODS: A qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted in three endemic districts of Madhya Pradesh between July and Oc

[What really matters can't be planned ahead : Impediments for advance care planning from a qualitative study on very old people living alone].

BACKGROUND: Despite there is evidence for the need for advance care planning for older people living alone (OPLA), especially if they want to stay at home until the end, utilization of measures for ACP remains rather scarce. The causes for this discrepancy have not yet been researched in this target group. Effects of Resource Sharing Networks on Community Anti-Drug Coalitions' Outcomes: A Social Network Analysis.

Substance use-related problems continue to be a national public health crisis despite years of prevention efforts. Community anti-drug coalitions are well positioned to address substance use at local levels. Coalitions often rely on their members to connect to resources they need to address community issues and plan for sustainability over time. Such capacity building occurs through voluntary cooperation among members, making it essential to understand the role network connections play. This study sought to determine whether structural characteristics of coalitions' resource sharing networks i

Comparative Effectiveness of Coalitions Versus Technical Assistance for Depression Quality Improvement in Persons with Multiple Chronic Conditions.

SIGNIFICANCE: Prior research suggests that Community Engagement and Planning (CEP) for coalition support compared with Resources for Services (RS) for program technical assistance to implement depression quality improvement programs improves 6- and 12-month client mental-health related quality of life (MHRQL); however, effects for clients with multiple chronic medical conditions (MCC) are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To explore effectiveness of CEP vs RS in MCC and non-MCC subgroups. DESIGN: Secondary analyses of a cluster-randomized trial. SETTING: 93 health care and community-based programs in two

Communicating Health Research With Plain Language.

Although critical to enacting change, effectively communicating clinical and public health research results remains a challenge. In a webinar that occurred on December 7, 2023, a group of clinical and public health researchers and communications specialists convened to share their experiences using plain language materials to communicate research results. Herein, they provide practical guidance and case examples of lay summaries, infographics, data dashboards, and zines, along with challenges and potential solutions. Discussion illuminated the critical importance of partnering with communities

Getting closer to people: family planning provision by drug shops in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Private-sector drug shops are often the first point of health care in sub-Saharan Africa. Training and supporting drug shop and pharmacy staff to provide a wide range of contraceptive methods and information is a promising high-impact practice for which more information is needed to fully document implementation experience and impact. METHODS: Between September 2010 and March 2011, we trained 139 drug shop operators (DSOs) in 4 districts of Uganda to safely administer intramuscular DMPA (depot medroxyprogesterone acetate) contraceptive injections. In 2012, we approached 54 of thes

The checkerboard area health system: delivering comprehensive care in a remote region of New Mexico.

A comprehensive health center is defined as the synergistic coupling of a medical and administrative structure designed to provide inpatient, outpatient, and public health services. While health centers have been widely established in other countries, only limited implementation has occurred in rural areas of the United States. The successful implementation of the health center concept in a sparsely populated area of northwestern New Mexico, which is predominately inhabited by Navajo Indians and Spanish Americans, is descriptively analyzed. The physical environment and the socioeconomic charac
