Analysis of a multilevel diagnosis decision support system and its implications: a case study.

Medical diagnosis can be performed in an automatic way with the use of computer-based systems or algorithms. Such systems are usually called diagnostic decision support systems (DDSSs) or medical diagnosis systems (MDSs). An evaluation of the performance of a DDSS called ML-DDSS has been performed in this paper. The methodology is based on clinical case resolution performed by physicians which is then used to evaluate the behavior of ML-DDSS. This methodology allows the calculation of values for several well-known metrics such as precision, recall, accuracy, specificity, and Matthews correlati

Using empirical likelihood to combine data: application to food risk assessment.

This article introduces an original methodology based on empirical likelihood, which aims at combining different food contamination and consumption surveys to provide risk managers with a risk measure, taking into account all the available information. This risk index is defined as the probability that exposure to a contaminant exceeds a safe dose. It is naturally expressed as a nonlinear functional of the different consumption and contamination distributions, more precisely as a generalized U-statistic. This nonlinearity and the huge size of the data sets make direct computation of the proble

Obtaining optic disc center and pixel region by automatic thresholding methods on morphologically processed fundus images.

Development of automatic retinal disease diagnosis systems based on retinal image computer analysis can provide remarkably quicker screening programs for early detection. Such systems are mainly focused on the detection of the earliest ophthalmic signs of illness and require previous identification of fundal landmark features such as optic disc (OD), fovea or blood vessels. A methodology for accurate center-position location and OD retinal region segmentation on digital fundus images is presented in this paper. The methodology performs a set of iterative opening-closing morphological operation

Computational Phenotypic Drug Discovery for Anticancer Chemotherapy: PTML Modeling of Multi-Cell Inhibitors of Colorectal Cancer Cell Lines.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most dangerous neoplastic diseases in terms of both mortality and incidence. Thus, anti-colorectal cancer agents are urgently needed. Computational approaches have great potential to accelerate the phenotypic discovery of versatile anticancer agents. Here, by combining perturbation-theory machine learning (PTML) modeling with the fragment-based topological design (FBTD) approach, we provide key computational evidence on the computer-aided de novo design and prediction of new molecules virtually exhibiting multi-cell inhibitory activity against different colorect

Exploring inter-trial coherence for inner speech classification in EEG-based brain-computer interface.

Objective. In recent years, electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) applied to inner speech classification have gathered attention for their potential to provide a communication channel for individuals with speech disabilities. However, existing methodologies for this task fall short in achieving acceptable accuracy for real-life implementation. This paper concentrated on exploring the possibility of using inter-trial coherence (ITC) as a feature extraction technique to enhance inner speech classification accuracy in EEG-based BCIs.Approach. To address the objective,

A computational fluid dynamics simulation framework for ventricular catheter design optimization.

In this research an optimization methodology and 3D computational fluid dynamics algorithm were coupled to reach an important design objective for ventricular catheters: uniform inlet flow distribution. The optimized catheter design presented significantly improves on previous designs explored in the literature and on standard catheter designs used clinically. The automated, iterative fluid simulation framework described in this work can be used to rapidly explore design parameter influence on other flow-related objectives in the future.

Measuring Agreement in Diagnostics: A Practical Guide for Researchers.

Healthcare professionals routinely perform clinical examinations and diagnostic assessments. How the findings of these assessments are interpreted can have significant implications for patient care and outcomes. A recent systematic review on reliability and agreement studies in intrapartum fetal heart rate monitoring highlighted three methodological issues: (1) confusion between the concepts of agreement and reliability, (2) lack of clarity on how agreement and reliability measures are calculated when more than two raters are involved, and (3) confidence intervals seldom reported. This paper a

On the accuracy of the segmentation process and transcatheter heart valve dimensions in TAVI patients.

Accurate segmentation of medical images is critical for generating patient-specific models suitable for computational analyses, particularly in the context of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This study aimed to quantify the accuracy of the segmentation process from medical images of TAVI patients to understand the uncertainty in patient-specific geometries. We also quantified discrepancies between actual and CT-related diameter measurements due to artifacts and intra-observer variability. Segmentation accuracy was assessed using both synthetic phantom models and patient-specifi

A new method for the estimation of stochastic epidemic descriptors reinforced by Kalman-based dynamic parameter estimation. Application to mpox data.

In the realm of epidemiology, it is essential to accurately assess epidemic phenomena through the adoption of innovative techniques that yield reliable predictions. This article introduces an advanced method that merges the Extended Kalman Filter approach with recursive algorithms to compute critical stochastic attributes important for evaluating epidemics. A new three-dimensional discrete Markov chain is presented, according to which the total number of infections, deaths, and the duration of epidemic outbreaks are estimated. This approach represents a notable improvement over the standard es

EEG Neurofeedback for Anxiety Disorders and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders: A Blueprint for a Promising Brain-Based Therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review provides an overview of current knowledge and understanding of EEG neurofeedback for anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: The manifestations of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) are associated with dysfunctions of neurophysiological stress axes and brain arousal circuits, which are important dimensions of the research domain criteria (RDoC). Even if the pathophysiology of these disorders is complex, one of its defining signatures is behavioral and physiological over-arousal. Interestingly, arousal-rel

Using Natural Language Processing Methods to Build the Hypersexuality in Bipolar Reddit Corpus: Infodemiology Study of Reddit.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar is a severe mental health condition affecting at least 2% of the global population, with clinical observations suggesting that individuals experiencing elevated mood states, such as mania or hypomania, may have an increased propensity for engaging in risk-taking behaviors, including hypersexuality. Hypersexuality has historically been stigmatized in society and in health care provision, which makes it more difficult for service users to talk about their behaviors. There is a need for greater understanding of hypersexuality to develop better evidence-based treatment, support
