[Acute generalized exanthematic pustulosis in children. Apropos of a case].

A seven year old girl without any personal or familial history of psoriasis presented with a maculo-papular then pustular, uniformly generalized eruption. She also had fever, neutrophilic granulocytosis, conjunctivitis and vulvitis. There was no evidence for bacterial or viral aetiology. Skin biopsy showed spongiform multilocular pustules and a vasculitis. The child recovered spontaneously within one week without further relapse.

Antibacterial and COX-2 Inhibitory Tetrahydrobisbenzylisoquinoline Alkaloids from the Philippine Medicinal Plant Phaeanthus ophthalmicus.

Phaeanthus ophthalmicus (Roxb. ex G.Don) J.Sinclair (previously known as P. ebracteolatus (Presl) Merr) is a Philippine medicinal plant occurring as evergreen shrub in the lowland forests of Luzon islands. It is used traditionally by Filipinos to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, ulcer and wound infections. Based on previous investigations where cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) functions as immune-linked factor in infectious sensitivities to bacterial pathogens by triggering pro-inflammatory immune-associated reactions, we investigated the antimicrobial and COX inhibitory activities of the extracts and

Differential diagnosis of pediatric conjunctivitis (red eye).

Because eye injuries and diseases may potentially result in serious vision impairments, accurate diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic conditions are imperative. A symptom common to eye impairments is conjunctivitis, or red eye, a commonly seen manifestation in an ambulatory pediatric population. Because conjunctivitis is caused by various etiologies, clinicians must derive a differential diagnosis. This article examines possible causes of conjunctivitis after the neonatal period in this population. Differential diagnosis is dependent on a complete history, distinct physical findings, and use

Novel anti-biofouling and drug releasing materials for contact lenses.

Contact lens users very often become patients of allergic conjunctivitis, which is caused by protein and bacteria adsorption to the eye, because contact lenses easily adsorb proteins and bacteria. However, even if contact lens users develop eye diseases such as allergic conjunctivitis, most of them continue to use contact lenses to avoid interference to daily life or a decrease in their quality of life. If novel contact lenses able to prevent and additionally cure eye diseases can be manufactured, they could improve the quality of life of contact lens users worldwide. Thus, we aim to develop a

Fusidic acid viscous eyedrops--an evaluation of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and clinical use for UK optometrists.

Recent changes in UK law have allowed UK-based optometrists to sell and supply fusidic acid viscous eyedrops, providing it is in the course of their professional activity and in an emergency. Alternatively, the optometrist may access fusidic acid viscous eyedrops, for a named patient, using a written order supplied to a pharmacy. This review provides details of the legal background to these changes, examines the common causes of a bacterial conjunctivitis, examines the mechanism of action of this narrow spectrum antibiotic as a bacteriostatic agent, reviews the susceptibility of common ocular

[A multicenter randomized study of fusidic acid ophthalmic gel and rifamycine eyedrops in acute conjunctivitis].

A total of 163 patients with acute, presumably bacterial, conjunctivitis were included in a randomized trial, comparing: 1% fusidic acid viscous eye drops, a new ophthalmic formulation of fusidic acid instilled twice daily with rifamycin eye drops, four times daily. Both drugs were given 7 days long. Bacterial origin of the conjunctivitis, mainly staphylococcal, was proved in 75% of the cases. Overall, at the end of the treatment, a satisfactory response, on bacteriological and clinical grounds, was recorded for 87.3 and 89.5% of the patients in the Fucidin gel and rifamycin groups respectivel

Mulberry Leaf Extract Alleviates Staphylococcus aureus-Induced Conjunctivitis in Rabbits via Downregulation of NLRP3 Inflammasome and Upregulation of the Nrf2 System and Suppression of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines.

INTRODUCTION: Mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-obesity, antidiabetic, antiatherosclerotic, and anticancer properties. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of mulberry leaf extract (MLE) on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-induced conjunctivitis (5 × 109 colony-forming units, 0.5 mL/eye) in a rabbit model. METHODS: Rabbits were treated with MLE (5 mL/kg·d-1 and 10 mL/kg·d-1), 0.9% saline, pearl bright eye (PBE) drops, or erythromycin eye ointment (EEO) group for 5 days. Th

Discord between presence of follicular conjunctivitis and Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a single Torres Strait Island community: a cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVE: Recent surveys identified trachomatous inflammation - follicular (TF) at endemic levels in the Torres Strait Islands; however, local health staff do not report trachomatous trichiasis (TT) in adults. We undertook a cross-sectional survey involving eye examination and microbiological testing to better understand this disconnect. METHODS: We examined 169 of 207 (82%) residents and collected ocular swabs for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for Chlamydia trachomatis. Other viral PCR tests and bacterial culture were also performed. RESULTS: TF prevalence in children aged 5-9 ye

[. Oсumethyl in the treatment of allergic diseases of eyelids and conjunctiva].

Treatment of allergic diseases of eyelids and conjunctiva (conjunctivites and blepharoconjunctivites) often presents difficulties due to peculiarities of their pathogenesis - allergic and vascular reactions, disorder of lacrimal production, meibomian gland dysfunction, and possible bacterial contamination. It has been suggested to use Ocumethyl, which contains zinc sulfate (binding, drying, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic effect), diphenhydamine hydrochloride (an Н1-antihistamine that decreases capillary permeability and helps resolve conjunctival and eyelid edema), naphazoline hydrochloride

Bilateral disciform keratitis in Reiter's syndrome.

Reiter's syndrome is commonly associated with conjunctivitis and rarely with uveitis. Bilateral disciform keratitis at presentation is a very rare manifestation in Reiter's syndrome. A 13-year-old boy developed bilateral disciform keratitis with oligoarthritis following an episode of conjunctivitis. In addition he had suspected bacterial keratitis with hypopyon in the left eye as a possible secondary infection of an epithelial defect that is a feature of Reiter's keratitis. Empirical treatment with intensive topical antibiotics as a therapeutic trial completely resolved the hypopyon and the di

Clinical comparison of topical solutions containing trimethoprim in treating ocular surface bacterial infections.

Thirty-nine patients with bacterial ocular surface infections (conjunctivitis, blepharitis or blepharoconjunctivitis) were evaluated after treatment with a topically applied ophthalmic solution containing trimethoprim. A combination of trimethoprim and polymixin B (TP) produced identical clinical and microbiologic responses when compared to a solution containing, in addition to trimethoprim and polymyxin B, sulfacetamide. The sulfa component was not essential to produce desired clinical and microbiologic results.

Optimizing Accessibility of a Hand-wash Gel to Infant's Cradle: Effect on Neonatal Conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: In our recent study in 2015, we showed a significant relationship between increased rate of clinical neonatal conjunctivitis (CNC) and performance of eye red reflex examination. Our study aim was to assess whether improved accessibility of staff to disinfectant gel (via attaching the gel bottle to infant's cradle) will increase the caring staff compliance with hand hygiene and decrease the rate of CNC. METHODS: Our intervention included attaching bottles of alcohol-based gel to newborns' cradles to ensure full availability and accessibility of hand-wash disinfectant. We included a

Ophthalmic delivery of sparfloxacin from in situ gel formulation for treatment of experimentally induced bacterial keratitis.

The objective of the present work was (1) to develop an in situ gelling ophthalmic delivery system by combining pluronic F127 and pluronic F68, with sparfloxacin; and (2) to examine the influence of incorporating a mucoadhesive polysaccharide such as sodium hyaluronate on the healing property due to bacterial keratitis. The formulations (F1-F6) were sterilized by gamma irradiated using Co(60) . Ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) spectra studies were performed on sterilized and non-sterilized formulae. The formulations were evaluated for rheological characteristics, in vitro release behavior, a
