Infrastructuring AI and Robotics for Health and Everyday Life: Visions and Practices in a Japanese National Moonshot Research and Development Project.

This article examines how emerging infrastructural AI and robotics for health and everyday life are proposed and negotiated, drawing on ethnographic research within the Japanese Awareness AI Project. The project envisages distributed assistance relying on continuous measurement of bodily states, aiming to make technological systems recede into the background. The analysis reveals how the project envisions bodies and machines as tightly coupled, yet encounters profound sociotechnical frictions around data integration, consent and bodily safety. It also traces perceived side effects, including t

Gender and race/ethnicity differences in living kidney donor demographics: Preference or disparity?

In the United States, women are over-represented and Blacks are under-represented as living kidney donors. A traditional bioethics approach would state that as long as living donors believe that the benefits of participation outweigh the risks and harms (beneficence) and they give a voluntary and informed consent, then the demographics reflect a mere difference in preferences. Such an analysis, however, ignores the social, economic and cultural determinants as well as various forms of structural discrimination (e.g., racism, sexism) that may imply that the distribution is less voluntary than m

[Psychosomatic aspects of pathology of biliary passages].

The work was designed to study psychological features of patients with hypomotor dysfunction of biliary passages, chronic non-calculous cholecystitis with and without opistorchosis and cholelithiasis before and after cholecystectomy. A total of 343 patients were examined between 1997 and 2007. The control group comprised 100 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. All patients signed the informed consent. Significance of the difference between absolute and relative parameters was estimated using Student's t-test at three significance levels (0.05, 0.001, 0.001---??). There were no differences b

The interplay between environmental and host factors during an outbreak of visceral leishmaniasis in eastern Sudan.

Parasitic diseases, including human visceral leishmaniasis, are multifactorial. Factors that are expected to play an important role in the parasite-human interaction are exposure, parasite "virulence" and host resistance factors. In populations exposed to Leishmania donovani most subjects do not allow the parasites to establish themselves or remain asymptomatic. Some individuals, however, fail to control parasite expansion and dissemination and develop a visceral disease. We report here the results of a longitudinal survey whose aims were to identify risk factors underlying visceral leishmania

Community Perspectives on Ethical Considerations in Clinical Research: Lessons from the ESRIFAL Clinical Trial in the Meme River Basin, Cameroon.

The study explored community perspectives on ethical considerations in clinical research, focusing on the ESRIFAL trial conducted in Cameroon. The hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to analyze and interpret the data. Participants were selected by systematic sampling. In-depth interviews were used to gather data from the participants. Some findings revealed that while ethical principles such as informed consent are highly recommended in clinical trials, participants did not understand and interpret these documents with as much importance as expected. Participants had other prioritie

[Unguis incarnatus-conservative or operative treatment? A practical treatment algorithm].

Unguis incarnatus, an ingrown toenail, is a common condition in primary care, which is encountered by various medical professions. Inconsistent conservative treatment and nonindicated surgical treatment often result in complications and recurrence of the disease. Patients must be thoroughly informed about the complexity of the nail organ. This is a prerequisite to prevent trivialization of the disease and to achieve appropriate patient compliance for treatment. In this article a practical diagnostic and treatment algorithm for unguis incarnatus is presented. In mild cases of acute unguis incar

Co-Incidence or Co-Existence? Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in HbE-alpha Thalassaemia: A Case Report with Review of Literature.

Haemoglobin E (HbE) is a Haemoglobin variant that commonly occurs in many places in Asia. As β thalassaemia and α thalassaemia also occur in the same regions, the co-inheritance of these conditions leads to various phenotypic forms. HbE α thalassaemia is less common and of a milder phenotype than HbE β thalassaemia. Though malignancies are one of the complications in thalassaemia, occurrence of leukaemia is a rare event. Here we present a case of a two-year-old male child co-presenting with pre B acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) with MLL rearrangement and HbE alpha thalassaemia. The child i

Protocol for the unclassified primary antibody deficiency (unPAD) study: Characterization and classification of patients using the ESID online Registry.

BACKGROUND: Primary antibody deficiencies (PADs) without an identified monogenetic origin form the largest and most heterogeneous group of primary immunodeficiencies. These patients often remain undiagnosed for years and many present to medical attention in adulthood after several infections risking structural complications. Not much is known about their treatment, comorbidities, or prognosis, nor whether the various immunological forms (decreased total IgG, IgG subclass(es), IgM, IgA, specific antibody responses, alone or in combination(s)) should be considered as separate, clearly definable

OBJECTIVE: A pilot epidemiologic study was conducted in the People's Republic of China to assess the feasibility of applying the study protocol from a US case-crossover study on transient work-related exposures and the risk of an acute occupational hand injury. DESIGN: Injured workers were recruited from a hand surgery center in Ningbo, Zhejiang, People's Republic of China. A structured face-to-face interview questionnaire was administered. RESULTS: 156 workers with hand injury completed the study (73% men). The enrollment rate was 91%. Of those who refused participation, most indicated thei

Emotional abuse among children: a study in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Emotional abuse is the most hidden and underestimated form of child maltreatment. We report an exploratory study in Saudi Arabia of the rate and types of emotional abuse among children and its association with selected variables. A convenience sample of 60 children aged 12-18 years was recruited from 3 malls in Jeddah. A specially designed, self-administered questionnaire was completed in confidence by the children with the consent of parents. Overall 90% of participants reported at least 1 form of rejecting emotional abuse and 61.7% at least 1 form of ignoring or terrorizing types of abuse. C

Attitudes of Victim-Blame Toward Image-Based Sexual Abuse Victim-Survivors in Fiji: Understanding Gendered and Cultural Norms.

Victim-blaming and entrenched gender norms are a persistent barrier to justice and support pathways for victim-survivors of sexual and domestic violence in Fiji. While these issues have been considered in relation to physical forms of abuse, there remains limited understanding of how these attitudes may impact victim-survivors of technology-facilitated sexual violence, particularly image-based sexual abuse-the non-consensual creation, capture, distribution, or threatened distribution of nude or sexual imagery. This article examined these dynamics drawing on a reflexive thematic analysis of foc

Relative contributions of bleeding scores and iron status on health-related quality of life in von Willebrand disease: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder known in humans. Currently, studies investigating the health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in VWD using standardized tools are limited, particularly among patients with mild decreases in von Willebrand factor or activity. AIM: To determine HR-QoL and its predictors among patients with mild, moderate and severe forms of VWD. METHODS: Patients with clinical diagnosis of VWD were recruited from a tertiary Inherited Bleeding Disorder Clinic. Upon informed consent, bleeding scores were obtained via a stan
