BACKGROUND: Sterile corneal infiltration is an inflammatory condition typically associated with contact lens wear, staphylococcal hypersensitivity, or corneal procedures. Chemical injuries usually present with diffuse epithelial defects or stromal haze, whereas the development of a discrete sterile corneal infiltrate following chemical injury appears to be uncommon. We describe an unusual case of unilateral sterile peripheral corneal infiltration following accidental chemical injury caused by contact lenses soaked in a makeup remover.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old woman presented with seve

On-eye optoelectronic systems can address unmet needs across various healthcare applications, including monitoring of physiological signals related to vision or other diseases. In this context, this work introduces wearable light sources that combine ultrathin organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with contact lenses. As an illustration, we demonstrate their efficacy as a robust lighting solution for electroretinography (ERG). Through an in vivo experiment with a rabbit, we show that our system can generate an ERG signal comparable to that of conventional full-field light stimulation. Furtherm

OBJECTIVES: Previous reports showed that cosmetic cleansing oil for removing makeup, which contains mineral oil and surfactant, can deform some silicone hydrogel contact lenses (SHCLs) when applied directly to the lenses, although plasma-coated SHCLs (lotrafilcon A and B) were not affected. In the present study, we investigated hydrogel lenses and SHCLs in both wet and dry conditions.
METHODS: Several brands of hydrogel and SHCLs were immersed in a cleansing oil solution containing Sudan Black B for 5 min under wet and dry conditions. The lenses under the wet condition were simply picked up f

Corneal exposure to trophozoites of Acanthamoeba spp. may lead to Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK)-a rare, but sight-threatening disease-with a risk of recurrence due to residual stromal cysts. With polyhexanide (PHMB) and chlorhexidine (CHX) often constituting the standard regimen of therapy, polymeric compounds for the treatment of AK have shifted into the focus of research. In this study, the effectiveness of four 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridinium (TMDPy), 4,4'-trimethylenedipiperidinium (TMDPi)-based polymers, and polyquaternium-1 on Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts has been evaluated and their

PURPOSE: Cataract surgery is commonly followed by daily administration of multiple eye-drops of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs such as moxifloxacin, dexamethasone and bromfenac. Drop-less cataract surgery eliminates the need for the eye drops by injecting medications into the eye during surgery or by inserting devices such as puncta plug to achieve sustained delivery of the drugs. We propose to develop an alternative approach for drop-less cataract surgery by delivering the anti-inflammatory bromfenac via contact lenses (CLs).
METHODS: The sustained delivery is achieved by increasing

CASE REPORT: We report a case of keratitis in a female contact lens wearer, who developed a deep corneal abscess. The culture of a corneal biopsy scraping was positive for multiresistant Fusarium solani. The patient has a complicated clinical course and failed to respond to local and systemic antifungal treatment, requiring eye enucleation.
CONCLUSION: Fusarium keratitis may progress to severe endophthalmitis. Clinical suspicion is paramount in order to start antifungal therapy without delay. Therapy is complex due to the high resistance of this organism to usual antifungal drugs.

PURPOSE: Cosmetic products, such as mascara, are known to adhere to the surface of silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses (SiHySCLs), potentially affecting lens performance and comfort. However, little is known about how different SiHySCL materials influence cosmetic adhesion. Recent reports suggest that the newly introduced lehfilcon A, a 2-week frequent replacement SiHySCL with Water Gradient and Celligent technology, may exhibit reduced lipid and cosmetic adherence. This study aimed to compare the adhesion of non-waterproof mascara to four types of 2-week frequent replacement SiHySCLs to bet

Subretinal injection, the delivery of a solution between the photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), creates a subretinal space where components are in direct contact with photoreceptors and RPE cells. This delivery method allows for targeted treatment of these cells. Therapeutics for subretinal injection have been developed and approved, particularly for inherited retinal diseases. In animals, subretinal injection procedures can be challenging due to the lens size, especially in rodents. This article describes methods for subretinal injection in rats, enabling intraoperative
