Cancer in Africa: opportunities for collaborative research and training.

Cancer is a worldwide public health problem causing increasing morbidity and mortality, particularly in the developing world. Underlying trends are changing the pattern of cancer and this is also being influenced by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Even though the pattern of cancer varies across Africa, there are identifiable trends. Breast and cervical cancers, and Kaposi sarcoma are the commonest cancers in women, while Kaposi sarcoma, liver and prostate cancers are the commonest in men. Cancer causes more morbidity and mortality in Africa compared to other parts of

The Human Dynamic Clamp Reveals the Fronto-Parietal Network Linking Real-Time Social Coordination and Cognition.

How does the brain allow us to interact with others? Social neuroscience has already provided some answers to these questions but has tended to treat high-level, cognitive interpretations of social behavior separately from the sensorimotor mechanisms upon which they rely. The goal here is to identify the underlying neural processes and mechanisms linking sensorimotor coordination and intention attribution. We combine the human dynamic clamp, a novel paradigm for studyingrealistic social behavior, with high-resolution electroencephalography. The collection of humanness and intention attribution

Coil-helix transition in macromolecules. I. Minimal model.

This work presents a minimal coarse-grained molecular dynamics model for the coil-helix transition in polymers. We demonstrate that the addition of a Morse potential to a freely jointed chain with volume and bond potentials is sufficient to reproduce the essential thermodynamic features of the transition. From the simulations performed, the Zimm-Bragg propagation parameter s and nucleation parameter σ are extracted, providing quantitative measures of helical propensity and cooperativity, respectively. To illustrate the versatility of the model, this study systematically varies the spacing betw

The competition and cooperation mechanism of policy goals in China's diagnosis-related group: a quantitative analysis based on the BERTopic and Lotka-Volterra models.

BACKGROUND: Aiming at the practical problems such as upcoding and decomposing hospitalizations emerging in China's Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) reform, existing studies mostly attribute such issues to aspects like behavioral motivations, which fail to explain the root causes of the problems. METHODS: This paper takes policy goals as the research starting point and constructs a three-dimensional analytical framework of "identifying goals-quantifying relationships-explaining mechanisms". Based on 377 DRG policy texts covering the central, provincial and municipal levels from 2009 to 2025, this

[The role of the healthcare manager in vascular medicine: care coordination and team management].

Vascular medicine treats patients with complex conditions that are often associated with chronic or rare diseases, requiring close monitoring and multidisciplinary coordination. In this demanding context, the healthcare manager plays a central role in the organization of care and the quality of patient management. They coordinate paramedical teams, support skills development, and contribute to the continuous improvement of practices. They also support the teams by fostering staff retention, mentoring students, and promoting interprofessional collaboration-all of which are essential to ensuring

Comparative Evaluation of Desktop, Room-Scale, and Large-Space Co-Located Collaborative Virtual Reality in Immersive Training.

Large-space co-located collaborative virtual reality provides a training environment in which participants can move, communicate, and coordinate actions within a shared immersive space. However, evidence remains limited on whether this configuration improves spatial presence, team coordination, and learning engagement beyond desktop-based collaboration or distributed room-scale virtual reality. This study evaluated a single-center, three-arm experimental protocol involving 126 participants assigned to 42 three-person teams. Teams were randomized to desktop collaborative simulation, room-scale

Egalitarianism boosts collective intelligence.

The target article by Stibbard Hawkes and von Rueden (SHVR) provides useful terminological housekeeping, but its individualistic account of egalitarianism in small-scale societies risks overlooking important group-level functions. We argue that egalitarian norms are not merely by-products of individual strategies but actively sustain cooperation, coordination, and collective decision-making, enhancing group stability and collective intelligence. A full account of egalitarianism must integrate both individual-level processes and emergent group-level outcomes. Egalitarianism not only constrains

Individual and collective gains from cooperation and reciprocity in a dynamic-network Prisoner's Dilemma driven by extraversion, openness, and agreeableness.

How do stable personality differences shape cooperation when social ties can form and dissolve? We model a repeated Prisoner's Dilemma on an endogenous network in which three continuous Big Five traits map to transparent local mechanisms: Extraversion sets a target number of partners, Openness determines how broadly agents search beyond friends-of-friends, and Agreeableness sets a baseline willingness to cooperate. At each encounter, agents combine this baseline with the partner's directly observed history; there are no trait labels, gossip, or global reputations. Ties form when agents are und

Opportunities to Enhance Cancer Research through Advocate-Researcher Partnerships.

People who have experienced cancer are integral partners in the research process and improving standard-of-care treatments. Advocates contribute insights from lived experience that help researchers identify impactful scientific priorities, improve study design, and enhance clinical trial participation. Although programs have been established to connect scientists and advocates to enhance discovery, translational, and clinical research, challenges remain that hinder engagement and sustained partnerships. In this article, we describe prevalent barriers and provide suggestions to improve bidirect

Synchrony and Task Engagement in Virtual Reality: Temporal Dynamics, Predictors, and Psychological Outcomes of Collaborative Behaviors.

Collaborative behaviors provide useful signals for understanding how minds align through perception and actions. Virtual reality (VR) is a useful tool for studying these behaviors, as it enables fine-grained measurements of coordination in virtual social settings. In this work, we investigate collaborative behaviors in a large-scale classroom VR dataset of space-building activities (N = 146), focusing on dyadic synchrony and individual task engagement during the collaborative group activity. An analysis of collaborative behaviors over time revealed a U-shaped pattern in head and hand synchrony

The mental health of the French agricultural population represents a major public health concern, characterized by an increased vulnerability to suicide due to demanding working conditions, social isolation, economic pressures, and limited access to healthcare in rural areas. In this context, the deployment of the Farm Sentinel Model emerges as a relevant approach to suicide prevention, grounded in a community-based and collaborative framework. Led by the Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA), in collaboration with the Groupement d’Études et de Prévention du Sui

To clean or not to clean: the free-rider problem in sequentially shared resources.

Shared resources enhance productivity, yet at the same time open pathways for biological and digital contamination, turning physical or digital hygiene into a cooperation dilemma prone to free-riding. Here, we introduce a game of sequential sharing of common resources, an empirically parameterized evolutionary model of population dynamics in sequential-use settings such as gyms or shared workspaces. The success of the strategies implemented in the model, which involve equipment cleaning before or after use, is based on the trade-offs between cleaning costs, contamination risks and social incen

The Elephant in the Room: Reckoning With Collegiality and Authorship in Academic Pharmacy.

Collaborative projects help faculty produce scholarship while balancing teaching, research, and service responsibilities. However, faculty's assumptions about contributions and authorship definitions can lead to confusion and disappointment in collaborative scholarship. Lapses in communication can cause delays, uneven workloads, and perceptions of unfairness. Inconsistent application of authorship criteria and a lack of transparency in authorship order may further create frustration and disengagement for future projects, particularly, when their contributions affect promotion and tenure. Visualized shared mental modeling: an adapted practical framework for interdisciplinary teams solving complex problems in healthcare.

Healthcare systems and the scientific community are increasingly recognizing the need for multidisciplinary, inter-organizational perspectives and skill sets to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time to improve human health. However, as our approach to scientific inquiry is evolving, our methods of working across teams remain largely unchanged. Using a case example of a human-centered design project focused on improving care transitions during reentry to the community from incarceration, this paper details the importance and function of visualized shared mental models for multidiscipl

Many-strategy games in groups with relatives and the evolution of coordinated cooperation.

Humans often cooperate in groups with friends and family members with varying degrees of genetic relatedness. Past kin selection can also be relevant to interactions between strangers, explaining how the cooperation first arose in the ancestral population. However, modelling the effects of relatedness is difficult when the benefits of cooperation scale nonlinearly with the number of cooperators (e.g., economies of scale). Here, we present a direct fitness method for rigorously accounting for kin selection in n-player interactions with m discrete strategies, where a genetically homophilic group

Barriers and facilitators of collaboration during the implementation of vocational rehabilitation interventions: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Stakeholders from the mental health care sector and the social security sector are often involved in the implementation of vocational rehabilitation (VR) interventions, so-called coordinated or integrated program, as clients need support from both fields. Collaboration of the involved stakeholders from both sectors is therefore important. In this study, a review was performed to provide an overview of the barriers and facilitators for collaboration during the implementation of coordinated or integrated vocational rehabilitation interventions. METHODS: A systematic review (PROSPERO

A collaborative approach to advancing research and training in Public Health Data Science-challenges, opportunities, and lessons learnt.

The unprecedented availability of increasingly complex, voluminous, and multi-dimensional data as well as the emergence of data science as an evolving field provide ideal opportunities to address the multi-faceted public health challenges faced by low and middle income countries (LMIC), especially those in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is a severe lack of well-trained data scientists and home-grown educational programs to enable context-specific training. The lack of human capacity and resources for public health data analysis as well as the dire need to use modern technology for better u

Is History the Same as Evolution? No. Is it Independent of Evolution? Certainly Not.

History is full of violence and oppression within and between groups, and although group conflicts enhance within-group cooperation (mediated by oxytocin, which promotes parochial altruism) the hierarchy within groups ensures that spoils accrue very unevenly. Darwin suggested, and we now know, that sexual selection is as powerful as selection by mortality, and the main purpose of survival is reproduction. Male reproductive skew is greater than that among females in all societies, but the difference became much greater after the hunting-gathering era, and the rise of so-called "civilization" wa
