Outbreak of Botulism Due to Illicit Prison-Brewed Alcohol: Public Health Response to a Serious and Recurrent Problem.

BACKGROUND: Botulism is a rare, sometimes lethal neuroparalytic illness. On 2 October 2011, an inmate at prison A developed symptoms compatible with botulism after drinking pruno, an illicit, prison-brewed alcoholic beverage. Additional illnesses were identified within several days. We conducted an investigation to determine the cause and extent of the outbreak. METHODS: A case was defined as signs or symptoms of botulism in a prison A inmate with onset during 30 September-9 October 2011. Cases were identified through medical evaluations and interviews with inmates about recent pruno consumpt

Follow-up of antibiotic prophylaxis: impact on compliance with guidelines and financial outcomes.

In order to enhance the quality of antibiotic use, a new financial system was introduced in Belgium in 1997, which links reimbursement of antibiotic costs incurred during prophylaxis in surgery and obstetrics to compliance with evidence-based guidelines. At University Hospitals Leuven (UHL), this reimbursement scheme was supplemented with a follow-up programme in 2001 that informs physicians of their compliance with the guidelines and outlines the financial consequences of their use of prophylactic antibiotics. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of the follow-up programme develope

Economic costs of veterinary drug and antibiotic use in large Hungarian dairy cattle herds.

Veterinary medicine costs are a major component to the economic losses caused by diseases in dairy cattle herds. This study aimed to quantify veterinary drug costs with a particular emphasis on antibiotics, in relation to key production parameters on eight large Hungarian dairy farms (average: 864 cows per herd) from 2017 to 2019. Veterinary drug costs were analysed by product group and indication, with antibiotic costs further categorised by substance class and indication. The average annual cost of veterinary drugs was €75.4 per cow and 0.80 € cents*L-1 milk. Antibiotics accounted for the la

Economic Evaluation of Ready-to-Dilute Thiotepa (Tepylute®): Institutional Cost Offsets and Time Savings Compared to Lyophilized Thiotepa in a United States Hospital Pharmacy.

PURPOSE: Thiotepa is an intravenous alkylating agent used with other chemotherapy drugs to treat several forms of cancers. Preparation of thiotepa requires reconstitution of powder in sterile water, followed by dilution of the solution with sodium chloride 0.9% solution for injection. The reconstitution of lyophilized powdered drug formulations may pose challenges as it can increase the risk of preparation errors, leading to wastage or potential clinical consequences, and extend preparation time compared to ready-to-dilute formulations; one study found that 15% of thiotepa doses were made out-

TRICARE; Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Treatment. Final rule.

This final rule modifies the TRICARE regulation to reduce administrative barriers to access to mental health benefit coverage and to improve access to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment for TRICARE beneficiaries, consistent with earlier Department of Defense and Institute of Medicine recommendations, current standards of practice in mental health and addiction medicine, and governing laws. This rule seeks to eliminate unnecessary quantitative and non-quantitative treatment limitations on SUD and mental health benefit coverage and align beneficiary cost-sharing for mental health and SUD ben

Economic costs of veterinary drug and antibiotic use in commercial dairy cattle herds in Central European countries.

Antimicrobial use in livestock production is a critical issue in terms of both animal health and public health, particularly due to its role in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In this study, the veterinary drug costs, with a particular focus on antibiotics, were surveyed in 20 commercial dairy cattle herds comprising a total of 18,653 cows in five Central-European countries (Czechia, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia) in 2019. The distribution of veterinary drug costs by product groups and indication, as well as the antibiotic usage by indication and class of active subs

Foreign free riders and the high price of US medicines.

The US government, backed by the pharmaceutical industry, wants to convince Americans that they're paying more for drugs because they're contributing more than their fair share of the costs of research and development. Not so, argue two researchers who have looked at the evidence.

From information free-riding to information sharing: how have humans solved the cooperative dilemma at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution?

Cumulative cultural evolution, where populations accumulate ever-improving knowledge, technologies and social customs, is arguably a unique feature of human sociality and responsible for our species' ecological dominance of the planet. However, at the heart of cumulative cultural evolution is a cooperative dilemma. Assuming asocial learning is more costly than social learning, social learners can act as 'information free-riders' by copying innovations from asocial learners without paying the cost. This cost asymmetry will reduce innovation, inhibiting cumulative culture. Innovators might respo

Incidence, Management, and Hospital Costs of Orthopaedic Injuries of E-Scooter Riders in Western Australia.

The use of electric scooters (e-scooters) is increasing in Australia and internationally. The increasing availability of e-scooters has led to a rise in the number of injuries, with most patients sustaining orthopaedic injuries. This retrospective case series describes the incidence, management, and hospital costs of the orthopaedic injuries, which presented to the emergency department (ED) of the major trauma center in Western Australia. Data on demographics, ED dispatch destination, management, follow-up clinics, and hospital costs were collected between 2017 and 2022. Since June 2020, there

Beyond Cost: Faricimab as a Driver of Service Efficiency and Quality in Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Care.

INTRODUCTION: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) is a chronic, vision-threatening condition requiring ongoing anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections. As the population ages and the demand for eye care rises, capacity-constrained healthcare systems struggle to deliver timely treatment. In the UK, many patients experience delays, increasing the risk of irreversible visual loss. Therapies with extended dosing intervals, such as faricimab, may reduce treatment burden and improve care quality. METHODS: A microsimulation model was developed representing a hy

Comorbidity of migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Comorbidity refers to the greater than coincidental association of separate conditions in the same individuals. Historically, a number of conditions have been noted to be comorbid with migraine, notably psychiatric disorders (anxiety, depression, panic disorder), epilepsy, asthma, and some congenital heart defects. Migraine sufferers have increased medical costs overall compared with others of the same sex and age, even after considering the cost of specific migraine treatment. Thus, estimates of the burden of migraine often include the costs of conditions comorbid with it.

A unified CPG-based and multi-agent control framework for low-cost quadruped robots.

Quadruped robots have gained significant attention due to their superior mobility on uneven and unstructured terrains, offering potential applications in inspection, search and rescue, and field exploration. However, achieving robust locomotion on low-cost platforms remains challenging because of constraints in stability, adaptability, sensing quality, and onboard computation. In this work, we present an integrated motion-control framework that combines biologically inspired Central Pattern Generators (CPGs), a multi-agent reinforcement learning coordination layer, and low-cost hardware adapta

Costs of polio immunization days in China: implications for mass immunization campaign strategies.

Ten provinces of China were selected to estimate the cost per immunization of the 1994-95 national immunization days (NIDs) at five levels (e.g. province, prefecture, county, township and village). Personnel costs accounted for the largest overall share of costs (39 per cent), followed by publicity and promotion costs (27 per cent), and logistic costs (15 per cent). Without consideration of vaccine costs, the major part of NID expenses were shouldered at the township level, which paid for 47 per cent of all incremental costs, while county and village level covered 28 per cent and 18 per cent r
