Comparative Experimental Raman, DFT, and Chemometric Characterization of Selected Phenolic Acids: Structural and Environmental Contributions to the Vibrational Response.

Phenolic acids exhibit structure-dependent vibrational responses governed by aromatic substitution, π-conjugation, oxygenated functional groups, and molecular environment. In this work, p-coumaric, caffeic, trans-ferulic, and gallic acids were investigated through an integrated experimental Raman, density functional theory (DFT), and chemometric approach to establish molecular relationships between hydroxylation, methoxylation, conjugation, and Raman spectral behavior. Raman spectra were recorded in the solid state and in an ethanol/water (1:1, v/v) mixture. At the same time, DFT calculations

Caffeoyl and coumaroyl derivatives from Acacia cochliacantha exhibit ovicidal activity against Haemonchus contortus.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE: Acacia cochliacantha is a small tree whose foliage is traditionally used in Mexico for treatment of kidney pain, gastrointestinal illnesses and to kill intestinal parasites. In recent decades, the study of vegetal extracts has offered other possible alternatives for the control of Haemonchus contortus. Considering that this nematode affects dramatically the health and productivity of small ruminants, the aim of this study was to identify the anthelmintic compounds from A. cochliacantha hydro-alcoholic extract (HA-E) through an ovicidal test. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

4-Hydroxycinnamic acid and Itaconic acid exhibit broad spectrum synergy with conventional antibiotics in inhibiting multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium.

One approach to combating the surge in bacterial antimicrobial resistance is to use adjuvants that sensitize drug-resistant strains to conventional antibiotics. Here, we evaluated 24 pure bioactive compounds for their antibiotic adjuvant activity against a multidrug-resistant strain of Salmonella Typhimurium (DT104). All 24 bioactive compounds exhibited measurable antibacterial activity against DT104, with MIC values ranging from 0.036 to 4 mg/mL. Moreover, four bioactive compounds, namely p-coumaric acid, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, itaconic acid, and cinnamic acid, sensitized DT104 to five antib

A framework to mitigate the risk of chemical leukoderma: Consumer products.

Chemical leukoderma is an acquired depigmentation of the skin caused by repeated exposure to specific agents damaging to epidermal melanocytes. Case reports of chemical leukoderma have been associated with some consumer products. To date, there are no well-accepted approaches for evaluating and minimizing this risk. To this end, a framework is presented that evaluates the physical and chemical characteristics of compounds associated with chemical leukoderma and employs structure-activity relationship (SAR) read-across and predictive metabolism tools to determine whether a compound is at increa

Complexation of Hen Egg White Lysozyme With Bioactive Phenolic Acids: Molecular Insights Into the Binding Mechanisms and Inhibitory Effects Against Protein Aggregation.

Protein misfolding and aggregation are central to many protein aggregation disorders, highlighting the need for effective aggregation inhibitors. This study investigated fructose-induced aggregation of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) and its modulation by the phenolic acids ferulic acid (FA), caffeic acid (CA) and chlorogenic acid (CGA) at 100 and 200 μM. Circular dichroism and ThT fluorescence assays showed that fructose promoted aggregation through increased β-sheet content and fluorescence intensity, respectively, whereas all phenolic acids suppressed β-sheet formation. CA displayed the highe

How does fertilizer management strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation change the phytochemical profile and phenoloxidases activity during fruit ripening?

BACKGROUND: Highbush blueberry fruits have attracted a lot of attention from consumers due to their exquisite taste and considerable quantities of bioactive compounds. This premium-class foodstuff also contains antioxidant enzymes (phenoloxidases) implicated in the degradation of polyphenols that lead to discoloration and loss of antioxidant activity during fruit ripening. Despite substantial progress in research focused on fruit quality, unanswered questions remain about the effect of fertilizer strategy in soilless blueberry cultivation on the phytochemical content and phenoloxidases activit
