Salicylic acid (SA), an essential secondary messenger for plant defence responses, plays a role in maintaining a balance (trade-off) between plant growth and resistance induction, but the detailed mechanism has not been explored. Because the SA mimic benzothiadiazole (BTH) is a more stable inducer of plant defence than SA after exogenous application, we analysed expression profiles of defence genes after BTH treatment to better understand SA-mediated immune induction. Transcript levels of the salicylic acid glucosyltransferase (SAGT) gene were significantly lower in BTH-treated Nicotiana tabac

It is evident that the plasma membrane NADPH oxidases (NOXs) play an important role in the generation of superoxide radicals (O2-•) in plants during defense responses. This study was to clarify activation of NOXs in oxidative damage in Oryza sativa during SCN- exposure, particularly in the roles of jasmonic acid (JA) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on transcriptional and enzymatic changes of NOXs. Results indicated that enzymatic activity of NOXs in both roots and shoots was significantly enhanced during SCN- exposure, whereas the application of JA and H2S donor (NaHS) significantly repressed NOXs

The phytohormones jasmonate, gibberellin, salicylate, and ethylene regulate an interconnected reprogramming network integrating root development with plant responses against microbes. The establishment of mutualistic ectomycorrhizal symbiosis requires the suppression of plant defense responses against fungi as well as the modification of root architecture and cortical cell wall properties. Here, we investigated the contribution of phytohormones and their crosstalk to the ontogenesis of ectomycorrhizae (ECM) between grey poplar (Populus tremula x alba) roots and the fungus Laccaria bicolor. Bt cotton was genetically modified to produce insecticidal proteins targeting Lepidopteran pests and is therefore only minimally affected by caterpillar damage. This could lead to reduced levels of inherent, systemically inducible defensive compounds in Bt cotton which might benefit other important cotton herbivores such as plant bugs. We studied the effects of plant defense induction on the performance of the plant bug Lygus hesperus by caging nymphs on different food sources (bolls/squares) of Bt and non-Bt cotton which were either undamaged, damaged by Bt tolerant caterpillars, or treated w

Plants have evolved powerful immune systems to recognize pathogens and avoid invasions, but the genetic basis of plant susceptibility is less well-studied, especially to oomycetes, which cause disastrous diseases in many ornamental plants and food crops. In this research, we identified a negative regulator of plant immunity to the oomycete Phytophthora parasitica, AtRTP5 (Arabidopsis thaliana Resistant to Phytophthora 5), which encodes a WD40 repeat domain-containing protein. The AtRTP5 protein, which was tagged with green fluorescent protein (GFP), is localized in the nucleus and plasma membr

Root rot caused by Ilyonectria mors-panacis is a devastating fungal disease leading to defect in root quality and causes reduced yield during the perennial life cycle of Panax ginseng Meyer. This indicates the imperative need to understand the molecular basis of disease development and also to enhance tolerance against the fungus. With this idea, the protective effect of silicon (supplied as silica nanoparticles) in P. ginseng root rot pathosystem and its molecular mechanism was investigated in the current study. We have tested different concentrations of silicon (Si) to disease-infected ginse

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a devastating disease that causes extensive yield and quality losses to wheat and other small cereal grains worldwide. Species within the Fusarium graminearum complex are the main pathogens associated with the disease, F. graminearum sensu stricto being the main pathogen in Argentina. Biocontrol can be used as part of an integrated pest management strategy. Phytohormones play a key role in the plant defense system and their production can be induced by antagonistic microorganisms. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of the inoculation of Bacillus ve

BACKGROUND: After herbivore attack, plants express inducible resistance-related traits activated by hormones, mainly jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA). Methyl jasmonate (MeJa) is a biologically active methyl ester of JA. Exogenous applications of JA, SA, and MeJa induce responses similar to herbivory by insects. In this study, rice, Oryza sativa L. (Poaceae), plants were treated with two concentrations of MeJa (2 and 5 mmol L-1 ), two concentrations of SA (8 and 16 mmol L-1 ) and herbivory to evaluate effects of elicitation and herbivory on resistance to the rice stink bug (RSB) Oebal

The influence of salicylic (SA) and jasmonic (JA) acids as signaling systems mediators on the generation of H2O2 and expression of genes encoding protective proteins was studied in the leaves of wheat Triticum aestivum L. upon infection with the pathogen of septoriosis Septoria nodorum Berk. It was found that presowing treatment of seeds with SA and JA decreased the development of the fungus on the leaves of wheat and had a stimulating effect on the production of H2O2 in the area of infection. An increased expression of genes encoding oxalate oxidase AJ556991.1 and anionic peroxidase TC 151917

Over 216 million malaria cases are reported annually worldwide and about a third of these cases, primarily children under the age of five years old, will not survive the infection. Despite this significant world health impact, only a limited number of therapeutic agents are currently available. The lack of scaffold diversity poses a threat in the event that multi-drug-resistant strains emerge. Terrestrial natural products have provided a major source of chemical diversity for starting materials in many FDA approved drugs over the past century. Bixa orellana L. is a popular plant used in South

Common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs) link multiple plants together. We hypothesized that CMNs can serve as an underground conduit for transferring herbivore-induced defence signals. We established CMN between two tomato plants in pots with mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis mosseae, challenged a 'donor' plant with caterpillar Spodoptera litura, and investigated defence responses and insect resistance in neighbouring CMN-connected 'receiver' plants. After CMN establishment caterpillar infestation on 'donor' plant led to increased insect resistance and activities of putative defensive enzymes, induc

OBJECTIVE: Peramivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor having activity against various influenza A and B subtypes. The main route of elimination is the kidney and a dose reduction is justified for multiple-day therapy when the creatinine clearance is < 50 mL/min. Before the 2009 influenza pandemic, dosing guidelines did not exist for patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). This case report provides data on the dialysis membrane saturation coefficient (SA) and pharmacokinetic parameters of peramivir in a 29-year-old female receiving continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration (C

The plant galactolipids monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG) have been linked to the anti-inflammatory and cancer benefits of a green leafy vegetable diet in humans due to their ability to regulate the levels of free radicals like nitric oxide (NO). Here, we show that DGDG contributes to plant NO as well as salicylic acid biosynthesis and is required for the induction of systemic acquired resistance (SAR). In contrast, MGDG regulates the biosynthesis of the SAR signals azelaic acid (AzA) and glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) that function downstream of NO. Interes

Excessive expansion of white adipose tissue leads to hypoxia which is considered as a key factor responsible for adipose tissue dysfunction in obesity. Hypoxia induces inflammation, insulin resistance, and other obesity related complications. So the hypoxia-signalling pathway is expected to provide a new target for the treatment of obesity-associated complications. Inhibition or downregulation of the HIF-1 pathway could be an effective target for the treatment of obesity related hypoxia. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of hypoxia on functions of 3T3-L1 adipocytes emphasising on o

Upon herbivore attack, plants activate an indirect defense, that is, the release of a complex mixture of volatiles that attract natural enemies of the herbivore. When plants are simultaneously exposed to two herbivore species belonging to different feeding guilds, one herbivore may interfere with the indirect plant defense induced by the other herbivore. However, little is understood about the mechanisms underlying such interference. Here, we address the effect of herbivory by the phloem-feeding whitefly Bemisia tabaci on the induced indirect defense of Arabidopsis thaliana plants to Plutella

Low-molecular-weight compounds such as jasmonic, abscisic and salicylic acids are commonly thought to be regulators of plant stress responses. However, it is becoming clear that these molecules, often referred to as phytohormones, are only a part of bigger groups of compounds with biological activity. We propose that the concept of "hormone families" may help to better understand plant physiological responses by taking into account not only the alleged main regulators, but also their precursors, conjugates and catabolites. Novel approaches to profile potentially active compounds in plants are

Synthesis of cyclopenta[b]pyrane derivatives via Achmatowicz oxidative cyclization of furanols followed by intramolecular Knoevenagel condensation of the β-ketoester arm is examined. The extent of diastereoselectivity was dependent on the nature of the chiral atom within the tethering carbon of the pyrenone ring. In some cases, this process proceeds with a high degree of stereoselectivity after protection of the anomeric hydroxyl group. Furthermore, the cytotoxic activity of pyrazolone derivatives thereof was studied against HCT116 (human colorectal cancer cells), SK-N-SH (human Caucasian bone

Efficient communication between the pest-colonised and non-colonised organs is vital for the timely manifestation of defences that restrict systemic spread of pests. The vasculature provides an important conduit for translocation of signals that contribute to long-distance communication within a plant. Airborne signals also contribute to this process. In recent years, major advances have been made in identifying metabolites that are candidate systemic signals in plant defence against pathogens. Methyl salicylate, jasmonates, azelaic acid and a diterpenoid have been implicated as mobile signals

The NPRI (nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes (1) gene, firstly cloned in Arabidopsis thaliana, is a key gene involved in regulation of plant disease resistance. It plays a pivotal role not only in systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and induced systemic resistance (ISR), but also in basic resistance and resistance (R) gene-dependent resistance. NPR1 monomerization induced by enhanced reducing condition after oxidative burst, and the accumulation of NPR1 monomers in the nuclei, are required and enough for expression of PR (pathogenesis-related) genes and SAR. In barley leaves 13-lipoxygenases are induced by jasmonates. This leads to induction of lipid peroxidation. Here we show by in vitro studies that these processes may further lead to autoxidative formation of (2E)-4-hydroxy-2-hexenal from (3Z)-hexenal.
