BACKGROUND: Dental age of adults can be estimated by the analysis of the progressive physiological and degenerative phenomena which affect dental tissues. The pulp-dentinal complex is one of the dental structures that show modifications related to age, mainly resulting in the reduction of the pulp chamber volume due to the continual deposition of secondary dentin. The study aims to evaluate the accuracy of a simple and conservative method for estimating the age of adults based on CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) analysis of the narrowing of the pulp chamber caused by secondary dentin depos

INTRODUCTION: Clinicians routinely face conditions in which they have to decide whether the dental pulp can be saved or not. This study evaluated how reliable the clinical diagnosis of normal pulp/reversible pulpitis (savable pulp) or irreversible pulpitis (nonsavable pulp) is when compared with the histologic diagnosis.
METHODS: The study material consisted of 95 teeth collected consecutively in a general practice over a 5-year period and extracted for reasons not related to this study. Based on clinical criteria, teeth were categorized as having normal pulps, reversible pulpitis, or irrever

PURPOSE: To determine by means of a histopathological study in sub-human primates whether etching of an exposed pulp (the "Total Etch" technique) followed by capping with dentin bonding agents is a viable clinical treatment modality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In six sub-human primates, 147 Class V preparations were made for five experimental and two control groups. After exposing the pulps, the preparations were intentionally contaminated, rinsed, dried and then disinfected with a 2% chlorhexidine solution for 60 s. In the five experimental groups, the entire preparation including the exposed pu

The aim of this study was to evaluate, whether and how the histologic structure of invasive cervical resorption (external granulomas) affect their clinical radiographic diagnosis. For this purpose, nine more or less intact extracted teeth, of which intraoral radiographs were available, were processed for examination in the scanning electron (SEM) and light microscope. From some of the specimens non-decalcified ground sections were prepared and some were decalcified for preparation of histologic sections. Five teeth were scanned in an X-ray microtomography (microCT) device and digitally reconst

IGF1 (Insulin Growth Factor, 1) was intentionally applied onto pulp tissues, aiming to provoque a dentine regeneration process through the stimulation of the dentinoblasts' potententials. 72 cavities were hence performed on rabbit molars, intentionally exposing the dental pulp. Different concentrations of IGF1 were then applied; The histo and anatomo-pathological observations showed persistent vitality of the pulp without any sign of necrosis, even 6 weeks after the IGF1 application. Dentinoblasts layers (as an indication of the regeneration activity) were counted, according to a pre-establish

This study evaluated histomorphologically the influence of chronological age of the dog on the dental pulp-healing process after capping with the All Bond 2 system or with calcium hydroxide paste. The animals were divided according to age into young and adult groups. Class 5-type cavities were prepared, and the pulp was submitted to an exposure of a diameter of 0.5 mm. The pulp of the teeth was then protected with the adhesive system or with a calcium hydroxide paste. Sixty days after treatment, the results obtained with the adhesive system in the young group were significantly better than tho

Dental age estimation becomes a challenge once the root formation is concluded. In living adults, one dental age indicator is the formation of secondary dentine, also associated with orthodontic treatment as well as root shortening. The aim of this study was to establish whether these secondary effects of orthodontic treatment could generate a statistically significant difference in dental age estimations when using Kvaal's method. The study sample included 34 pairs of pre- and postorthodontic panoramic radiographs, from different individuals with exactly the same age and sex distribution. Fem

Dental caries, a bacterial disease of teeth characterized by destruction of enamel and dentine, is often the underlying cause of dental pain. When a carious lesion impinges on the dental pulp, pulpitis follows and, ultimately, necrosis of the pulp occurs. Untreated necrosis may lead to a localized abscess or a spreading infection into the surrounding soft tissue that results in cellulitis. Immediate treatment involves antibiotic therapy for cellulitis, perhaps with drainage of abscesses, while definitive treatment requires root canal therapy or extraction of the involved tooth. Pericoronitis i

The purpose of this study was to study the histologic changes in the dental pulp following pulpotomy with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and Calcium hydroxide. Pulpotomies were performed on premolar teeth that were to be extracted for orthodontic reasons. The radicular pulp was capped with either MTA or Calcium hydroxide and restored with IRM. The teeth were extracted at 4 and 8 week intervals, fixed in 10% formalin and then kept in 5% nitric acid for 28 days for demineralization. Longitudinal sections were then prepared and viewed under light microscope. The pulps capped with MTA (at the en

AIM: To investigate dental pulp healing after tooth replantation in rats using nestin as an odontoblastic marker for immunohistochemical analysis.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty-five maxillary right first molars from 25 female Sprague-Dawley rats, aged 4 weeks post-natally, were extracted and immediately repositioned in the original socket within 5 s. Five rats each were later killed on days 3, 5 and weeks 1, 2 and 4. The maxillae were removed en bloc and the tissue samples containing the maxillary right first molars were decalcified, sectioned, mounted and stained with anti-nestin antibody to be observ

Caries, pulpitis, and apical periodontitis increase health care costs and attendant loss of economic productivity. They ultimately result in premature tooth loss and therefore diminishing the quality of life. Advances in vital pulp therapy with pulp stem/progenitor cells might give impetus to regenerate dentin-pulp complex without the removal of the whole pulp. Tissue engineering is the science of design and manufacture of new tissues to replace lost parts because of diseases including cancer and trauma. The three key ingredients for tissue engineering are signals for morphogenesis, stem cells

Cavity preparation can increase the active synthesis and secretion of non-collagenous proteins by odontoblasts, thus resulting in the deposition of tertiary dentine. In this study, the effect of cavity preparation on osteonectin expression was examined in odontoblasts of the rat tooth pulp. A class V cavity was prepared in rat first molars to stimulate odontoblastic secretory activity, and the animals were killed at various intervals. In the normal pulp, osteonectin immunoreactivity was detected in odontoblasts but not other cells. At 1 day after cavity preparation, immunoreactivity had dimini

The purpose of this study was to assess histologically the pulpal healing process after pulpotomies in rat teeth were done using two different agents: 20% dilution of formocresol (FMC) and ferric sulfate (FS). Two criteria were used: degree of inflammation and extent of pulpal involvement. Zinc oxide-eugenol paste (ZOE) or polycarboxylate cement (PCX) were placed to seal the cavity preparations. The maxillary first molars of 120 Sprague-Dawley rats were treated in this study and were divided into four groups: 1) FMC + ZOE, 2) FS + PCX, 3) FMC + PCX, and 4) FS + ZOE. After treatment the animals

The pulpal response to mechanical exposure and capping either immediately or after 24 hours was investigated in 64 teeth of four cynomolgus monkeys with the use of Dycal, VLC Dycal, or Prisma-Bond. All overlying amalgam restorations were surface-sealed with zinc oxide-eugenol cement. After 2 months the teeth were removed and prepared for histologic examination; dentine bridges were present in almost all teeth filled with Dycal or VLC Dycal, and pulpal inflammation was observed in only one tooth that showed evidence of infection. Dentine bridges were usually incomplete when Prisma-Bond was used

A commonly recognized dental problem in cats is the resorption of tooth structure and subsequent loss of the tooth. These tooth defects are often very painful, because the sensitive dentin layer is exposed. The destruction of the tooth through odontoclastic resorption is considered a consequence of inflammatory resorption, probably secondary to periodontal inflammation. Because these resorptive lesions are progressive in nature, it is best to stage this progression of resorption in order to address treatment planning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a group of 58 cats with resorptive
