A total of 1482 adult ticks collected from vegetation and animals in central Spain in 2003-2005 were tested for the presence of Coxiella burnetii by polymerase chain reaction and subsequent reverse line blot hybridization (PCR-RLB). C. burnetii was identified in 7.7% of questing ticks (80/1039) and 3.4% of ticks collected from animals (15/443) belonging to four species: Hyalomma lusitanicum, Dermacentor marginatus, Rhiphicephalus sanguineus, and R. pusillus. These findings show an active role of ticks in maintaining C. burnetii in wild and peridomestic cycles in central Spain.

In 1989 investigations revealed a small scale outbreak of Q fever in the area of Vorderpfalz several kilometers west of the city of Ludwigshafen/Rhein. In 16 cases the diagnosis of Q fever has been serologically confirmed by complement fixation test (CF), the estimated number of unknown cases, however, may be considerable. We describe an autochthonous case of Rickettsia slovaca infection in a man 35 years of age from Russia who had tickborne lymphadenopathy. We used ELISA and quantitative PCR testing to further identify DNA and confirm diagnosis. Physicians in Russia should consider similar diseases in differential diagnoses after tick bites.

In recent years, babesiosis is frequently observed in dogs which have been on holiday with their owners in southern Europe. The epidemiology and wide variety of symptoms are discussed.
