Based on assembled data from the literature and oral communications as well as findings in the laboratory, the author concludes that an enteroviral aetiology of diarrhoeal diseases can be taken for granted in many instances. Enteroviral gastritis is not frequent nor serious and is usually not encountered in winter but rather in summer under conditions with a higher standard of hygiene. The ratio of enteroviruses in epidemics of gastroenteritis and in the aetiology of enteritis within the framework of epidemics with other manifestations of enteroviral disease is very variable and there is no ge

The persistent diarrhoea of greater than 14 days' duration in 17 infants, comprising 1% of 1672 patients who were admitted to a South African Hospital during January 1985-July 1987 for a study on acute gastroenteritis, is described. The age of the patients was between 20 days and 31 months (7.4 +/- 7.8 months), 11 of whom were of less than 6 months and the majority (13) were boys. Fifteen had the nutritional status below the 3rd weight-for-age centile. On admission, gastroenteritis was graded as mild in three patients, moderate in nine and severe in five. Seven, six and four patients had mild,

To determine the frequency with which acquired monosaccharide intolerance (AMI) occurs in infants less than 3 months of age, we performed a prospective descriptive study of infants admitted to the hospital for diarrhea. We searched for differences between the characteristics and causes of AMI in these infants and those of a cohort of similar-aged infants admitted with acute diarrhea (AD). Five hundred fifty-five infants less than 3 months of age admitted with diarrhea were enrolled. Nine percent of those infants had AMI, 40% had other forms of chronic diarrhea, and 51% had AD. The mean age at

15N-yeast protein absorption, nitrogen and fat retention, stool reducing substances, and lactate concentrations were measured in 22 infants who had had severe diarrhoea for 7 days. Stool losses of nitrogen and fat were large, and an appreciable proportion appeared to be endogenous. The supply of nitrogen and energy might have been a limiting factor in tissue repair if stool weight exceeded 30 g/kg body weight a day. These results differ from those in older children with kwashiorkor complicated by diarrhoea of similar severity.

The electronmicroscopic examination of stool samples from 18 infants and young children with gastroenteritis, hospitalized at the Clinic of Infectious Diseases in Prague, was carried out. In ten children rotavirus was found in the faeces and the bacteriological findings were negative. Rotavirus particles were aggregated by convalescent child sera and by normal human gamma globulin. The clinical picture was characterized by the sudden onset of vomiting and fever, in one case with febrile convulsions. Diarrhoea was watery and yellow-green, and usually persisted for four to five days. The conditi

BACKGROUND: Congenital Diarrhea and Enteropathies (CODEs) are rare monogenic disorders with early-onset diarrhea, feeding intolerance, and malabsorption causing secondary failure to thrive (FTT). ACSL5 deficiency is an emerging CODE subtype linked to defective intestinal fatty acid metabolism and dysregulated satiety signaling. CASE PRESENTATION: A female infant presented with chronic diarrhea, postprandial vomiting, and severe growth faltering. First-line evaluations were unrevealing. Proband-only whole-exome sequencing (WES) identified a novel homozygous missense variant in ACSL5, NM_016234.

To determine the importance of persistent diarrhea in childhood mortality a multiple-step verbal autopsy method was used to study 1934 deaths in Matlab, Bangladesh. We found that most of the deaths from acute watery diarrhea occurred in infancy, whereas the peak of non-watery diarrhea deaths was in children over 12 months of age. Children suffering from persistent diarrhea and malnutrition were at highest risk of dying during their third year of life. Children with infectious diseases have a two to four times higher risk of dying if they are malnourished, and for diarrhea the risk is 17 times

All the children between 1-4 year old were followed from January 1985 to December 1987 and all eligible children 9-24 months were given measles vaccine using annual pulse method in November-December 1985 and 86 in the study area. The children in C.R.H.S. Project area were used as controls for comparison. At the end of 2 years and 2 rounds of immunization with measles, significant reductions were observed in 1-4 year old mortality due to diarrhea and malnutrition in the study area in contrast to control area. Using epidemiological data and method of pulse immunization with measles vaccine can b

Between January 1984 and March 1986, 10 children aged between 7 and 56 months were admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children in London with chronic travellers' diarrhoea, after visiting the Indian subcontinent, France or Morocco. All the children were born in the United Kingdom and had been in good health before their journey abroad. On return to England most of these children were malnourished and two of them (twins) had a post-infective, tropical malabsorption-like syndrome. There was a high incidence of positive stool cultures and, on small intestinal biopsy, histological abnormalit

Gastrointestinal problems and, in particular, diarrhoeal illnesses are the commonest cause of morbidity and mortality among young children in Jordan. Children with diarrhea constitute about 20% of admissions to Jordan University Hospital (JUH). The aetiology of diarrhoea is multifactorial and bacterial pathogens are seldom isolated. Stool viruses have not been investigated. There is a steady fall in the prevalence of breast-feeding with a consequent increase in gastroenteritis, especially among the poor. The use of electrolyte solutions for oral rehydration therapy is encouraged, and the use o
