Everyday discrimination and mood and substance use disorders: a latent profile analysis with African Americans and Caribbean Blacks.

BACKGROUND: Perceived discrimination is a major source of health-related stress. The purpose of this study was to model the heterogeneity of everyday-discrimination experiences among African American and Caribbean Blacks and to identify differences in the prevalence of mood and substance use outcomes, including generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, alcohol-use disorder, and illicit drug-use disorder among the identified subgroups. METHOD: The study uses data from the National Survey of American Life obtained from a sample of African American and Caribbean Black respondents

Rapid discrimination between Anopheles gambiae s.s. and Anopheles arabiensis by High-Resolution Melt (HRM) analysis.

There is a need for more cost-effective options to more accurately discriminate among members of the Anopheles gambiae complex, particularly An. gambiae and Anopheles arabiensis. These species are morphologically indistinguishable in the adult stage, have overlapping distributions, but are behaviorally and ecologically different, yet both are efficient vectors of malaria in equatorial Africa. The method described here, High-Resolution Melt (HRM) analysis, takes advantage of minute differences in DNA melting characteristics, depending on the number of incongruent single nucleotide polymorphisms

Discrimination of West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis virus strains using RT-PCR RFLP analysis.

West Nile (WN) virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that induces lethal encephalitis in humans and horses. Since an outbreak of WN encephalitis in humans and horses occurred in New York City in late August 1999, the possibility exists that WN virus will invade regions that have close links with the United States, such as Japan. We developed a genetic diagnostic method that discriminates between strains of WN virus and Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus. The method involves RT-PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with a RT-PCR primer set, a nested PCR primer set, and a res

A rudimentary system for automatic discrimination among basic skin lesions on the basis of color analysis of video images.

BACKGROUND: Detection of differences in color is necessary for an automatic diagnostic system for skin lesions. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine whether color analysis of an image obtained with a videomicroscope can be used as a key to distinguish basic skin lesions. METHODS: We carried out quantitative color analyses of nine kinds of natural or artificial skin lesions. After images of the lesion and adjacent normal skin were obtained, the difference in the mean quasiabsorbance (logarithm of the inverse reflectance) values between the two were examined in each color band o

A Systematic Evaluation of Angelica sinensis Discrimination Based on FT-MIR Spectroscopic Analysis Combined with Machine Learning.

Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (AS) is a medicinal and food plant that has long faced a persistent challenge: its quality and price are often influenced by environmental conditions and geographical origins. To achieve substantial profits, items that are not produced in primary regions, along with counterfeit products, are frequently misbranded as originating from main production areas; this leads to fraud regarding geographic origin and product tampering. Rapid, effective and feasible methods for distinguishing the geographic origin of AS are important for ensuring consumer safety and protect

Prediction models for curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a systematic review with exploratory meta-analysis of discrimination.

BACKGROUND: Predicting curve progression is central to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) care, but the robustness and clinical readiness of existing prediction models remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To review AIS progression models across clinically distinct prediction tasks and treatment contexts and, where operational eligibility criteria were met, summarise discrimination using metric-stratified exploratory meta-analyses. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched to 26 April 2026. Full-text studies developing, validating, updating or evaluating prognostic models for AIS pr

Discrimination of ischemic versus hemorrhagic stroke type by presenting symptoms or signs: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Valid discrimination of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke relies exclusively on neuroimaging. Novel biomarkers in acute stroke present an opportunity to reconsider combination diagnostic approaches with standardized clinical assessment. Our systematic review evaluates diagnostic properties of acute clinical features in determining primary stroke etiology. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis according to PRISMA guidelines. PubMed and EMBASE were searched from inception to 6th March 2025. Eligibility criteria included cohort, cross-sectional, case-control, or r

Identifying two distinct neuroanatomical subtypes of first-episode depression using heterogeneity through discriminative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neurobiological heterogeneity in depression remains largely unknown, leading to inconsistent neuroimaging findings. METHODS: Here, we adopted a novel proposed machine learning method ground on gray matter volumes (GMVs) to investigate neuroanatomical subtypes of first-episode treatment-naïve depression. GMVs were obtained from high-resolution T1-weighted images of 195 patients with first-episode, treatment-naïve depression and 78 matched healthy controls (HCs). Then we explored distinct subtypes of depression by employing heterogeneity through discriminative analysis (HYDRA) with

Discriminating Between Papilledema and Optic Disc Drusen Using 3D Structural Analysis of the Optic Nerve Head.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The distinction of papilledema from other optic nerve head (ONH) lesions mimicking papilledema, such as optic disc drusen (ODD), can be difficult in clinical practice. We aimed the following: (1) to develop a deep learning algorithm to automatically identify major structures of the ONH in 3-dimensional (3D) optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans and (2) to exploit such information to robustly differentiate among ODD, papilledema, and healthy ONHs. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional comparative study of patients from 3 sites (Singapore, Denmark, and Australia) wit

Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis of Discrimination of the Four Kallikrein Panel Associated With the Inclusion of Prostate Volume.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether adding prostate volume to the kallikrein panel improves discrimination for ISUP Grade Group 2 or higher (GG2+) disease, as some men may have volume measurements available at the time of blood draw. While prostate volume predicts biopsy outcome, it requires an imaging procedure for measurement. The four kallikrein panel - commercially available as the 4Kscore - predicts risk of GG2+ disease and requires only a blood draw. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 9131 patients with available prostate volume and total PSA ≤25 ng/ml from 5 historical (sextant biopsy, pre-ISU

Radiomic Analysis of Myocardial Native T1 Imaging Discriminates Between Hypertensive Heart Disease and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine the diagnostic ability of radiomic texture analysis (TA) on quantitative cardiovascular magnetic resonance images to differentiate between hypertensive heart disease (HHD) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). BACKGROUND: HHD and HCM are associated with increased left ventricular wall thickness (LVWT). Contemporary guidelines define HCM as LVWT ≥15 mm that is unexplained by other disease, which complicates diagnosis in cases of co-occurrences. Conventional global native T1 mapping involves calculation of mean T1 values as a surrogate for fibrosis. How

Glucose-independent segmental phase angles from multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis to discriminate diabetes mellitus.

We investigated segmental phase angles (PAs) in the four limbs using a multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis (MF-BIA) technique for noninvasively diagnosing diabetes mellitus. We conducted a meal tolerance test (MTT) for 45 diabetic and 45 control subjects stratified by age, sex and body mass index (BMI). HbA1c and the waist-to-hip-circumference ratio (WHR) were measured before meal intake, and we measured the glucose levels and MF-BIA PAs 5 times for 2 hours after meal intake. We employed a t-test to examine the statistical significance and the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver opera

Use of Tissue Metabolite Analysis and Enzyme Kinetics To Discriminate between Alternate Pathways for Hydrogen Sulfide Metabolism.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenously synthesized signaling molecule that is enzymatically metabolized in mitochondria. The metabolism of H2S maintains optimal concentrations of the gasotransmitter and produces sulfane sulfur (S0)-containing metabolites that may be functionally important in signaling. Sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQOR) catalyzes the initial two-electron oxidation of H2S to S0 using coenzyme Q as the electron acceptor in a reaction that requires a third substrate to act as the acceptor of S0. We discovered that sulfite is a highly efficient acceptor and proposed that sul

A characteristic biosignature for discrimination of gastric cancer from healthy population by high throughput GC-MS analysis.

The HIV-induced demise of CD4-T cells is thought to be a result of the execution of genetically programmed cell death that occurs in lymphoid tissue, where many resident T cells are chronically hyperactivated. Since HIV-induced alterations of cell cycle control has been often indicated as prominent mechanism of immune hyper activation and cause of apoptotic death, the signal pathway involved in cell cycle dysregulation of T lymphocytes from HIV infected patients was extensively studied. Here, we also demonstrate that circulating T lymphocytes leave lymphoid tissues with diffused regressive les

Volumetric brain analysis in neurosurgery: Part 2. Brain and CSF volumes discriminate neurocognitive outcomes in hydrocephalus.

OBJECT: The evaluation of hydrocephalus remains focused on ventricular size, yet the goal of treatment is to allow for healthy brain development. It is likely that brain volume is more related to cognitive development than is fluid volume in children with hydrocephalus. This study tests this hypothesis by comparing brain and fluid volumes with neurocognitive outcome in pediatric patients with hydrocephalus. METHODS: Warf and colleagues previously acquired CT scans for pediatric patients in Uganda with myelomeningocele, measured frontal-occipital horn ratio (FOHR), and administered the modifie

Temporal discrimination thresholds in adult-onset primary torsion dystonia: an analysis by task type and by dystonia phenotype.

Adult-onset primary torsion dystonia (AOPTD) is an autosomal dominant disorder with markedly reduced penetrance. Sensory abnormalities are present in AOPTD and also in unaffected relatives, possibly indicating non-manifesting gene carriage (acting as an endophenotype). The temporal discrimination threshold (TDT) is the shortest time interval at which two stimuli are detected to be asynchronous. We aimed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of three different TDT tasks (visual, tactile and mixed/visual-tactile). We also aimed to examine the sensitivity of TDTs in different AOPTD phenotype

Rapid identification and discrimination of Brucella isolates by use of real-time PCR and high-resolution melt analysis.

Definitive identification of Brucella species remains a challenge due to the high degree of genetic homology shared within the genus. We report the development of a molecular technique which utilizes real-time PCR followed by high-resolution melt (HRM) curve analysis to reliably type members of this genus. Using a panel of seven primer sets, we tested 153 Brucella spp. isolates with >99% accuracy compared to traditional techniques. This assay provides a useful diagnostic tool that can rapidly type Brucella isolates and has the potential to detect novel species. This approach may also prove hel
