Perinatal discrimination and maternal depressive symptoms associated with infant development in African American families.

Research has documented elevated experiences of racial discrimination among African American families, and its adverse impacts on their psychological well-being. However, most studies have investigated the experiences of and consequences for older children and adults. The goal of the current study was to examine the relations among mothers' perception of discrimination during pregnancy, pre- and post-natal depressive symptoms, and infant development in African American families from low-income backgrounds. Using a longitudinal design with questionnaires and direct assessments, this study inclu

Mental Health and Homelessness in the Community of Madrid (Spain): The Impact of Discrimination and Violence.

The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of experiences of violence and discrimination on mental health among people in situations of homelessness (PSH). For this purpose, a quantitative, descriptive, and correlational investigation was conducted by conducting a survey with 603 PSH living in the Community of Madrid (Spain). The results show high levels of mental health impairment, as well as approximately half of the participants having experienced discrimination and violence in the course of their homelessness. Perceived experiences of discrimination are associated with higher levels o

Unpacking the public stigma of problem gambling: The process of stigma creation and predictors of social distancing.

Background and aims Public stigma diminishes the health of stigmatized populations, so it is critical to understand how and why stigma occurs to inform stigma reduction measures. This study aimed to examine stigmatizing attitudes held toward people experiencing problem gambling, to examine whether specific elements co-occur to create this public stigma, and to model explanatory variables of this public stigma. Methods An online panel of adults from Victoria, Australia (N = 2,000) was surveyed. Measures were based on a vignette for problem gambling and included demographics, gambling behavior,

The Role of Discrimination in Social Safety and its Interplay with Adolescents' Mental Health and Substance Use: A Network Perspective.

UNLABELLED: Discrimination, as experienced by adolescents, represents a major societal issue with implications for mental health and risky health behaviors. Yet the interplay between these factors in the context of social safety in urban living environments remains insufficiently understood and was explored in the current study. Participants were 1,675 Dutch adolescents (Mage = 17.44 years, SD = 0.36; 56.6% girls) who participated in the ABCD-study. This subjective data was combined with objective neighborhood indicators from the GECCO‑consortium. Cross-sectional network analyses revealed disc

Triazolam discrimination in squirrel monkeys distinguishes high-efficacy agonists from other benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine drugs.

RATIONALE: Triazolam is a high-efficacy benzodiazepine (BZ) agonist, which might be hypothesized to engender highly pharmacologically specific discriminative stimulus (DS) effects and distinguish among BZ agonists with different intrinsic efficacy. OBJECTIVES: The pharmacological specificity of the triazolam stimulus was determined by examining the effects of conventional and atypical BZ agonists, and other ligands active at the gamma-aminobutyric acidA (GABAA) receptor complex. Receptor mechanisms underlying the DS effects of triazolam were examined further using the BZ receptor antagonist f

Racial Discrimination is Associated with Binge-Eating Disorder in Early Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background Racial and ethnic discrimination are known stressors and are associated with negative psychological and physical health outcomes. Previous studies have found relationships between racial/ethnic discrimination and binge-eating disorder (BED), though they have mainly focused on adult populations. The aim of this study was to determine associations between racial/ethnic discrimination and BED in a large, national cohort study of early adolescents. We further sought to explore associations between the racial/ethnic discrimination perpetrator (students, teachers, or other adults) and BED

The costs and benefits of striving: Subclinical cardiovascular disease, depression, and hostility as children navigate adversity.

BACKGROUND: Adversity (e.g., poverty, discrimination, or stress) does not always produce harmful effects. "Striving" against adversity has been linked to positive psychological outcomes, such as lower depression, suggesting resilience; however, striving against severe adversity appears to simultaneously produce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk (framed in the literature as "John Henryism"). METHOD: We assessed striving (self-report survey) and adversity (nine indices, including socioeconomic status, discrimination, and city stress) in a sample of 9-11-year-old children (N = 283; 45.6% female;

Predicting the use of single versus multiple types of violence towards children in a representative sample of Quebec families.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine which factors best predict parental use of single versus multiple types of violence. METHODOLOGY: The study uses data from a Quebec telephone survey conducted with a representative sample of 2,469 mothers of children aged 0-17 years. The interview covered topics such as mother's attitudes and reports of violence towards children, mother's experiences of childhood violence, level of marital discord, and socioeconomic factors. A discriminant function analysis was performed using individual and family factors to predict membership in five dist

Discriminative stimulus properties of the atypical antipsychotic clozapine and the typical antipsychotic chlorpromazine in a three-choice drug discrimination procedure in rats.

RATIONALE: The atypical antipsychotic drug (APD) clozapine elicits a robust discriminative cue that is generally selective for other atypical APDS in two-choice drug discrimination (DD) procedures. OBJECTIVES: The present study determined whether a three-choice DD procedure with the atypical APD clozapine (CLZ) versus the typical APD chlorpromazine (CPZ) versus vehicle (VEH) could provide greater selectivity between atypical and typical APDs. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate 5.0 mg/kg CLZ from 1.0 mg/kg CPZ from VEH in a three-lever DD task with an FR30 food reinforc

Inverse agonist properties of the FG 7142 discriminative stimulus.

A two-lever, food-motivated discrimination was established between the benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonist FG 7142 (5.0 mg/kg) and its vehicle. The FG 7142 discriminative stimulus was pharmacologically characterized by testing trained rats with a variety of benzodiazepine receptor ligands. Administration of the inverse agonist DMCM (0.15-0.30 mg/kg) dose-dependently mimicked the FG 7142 stimulus. In contrast, the benzodiazepine receptor agonist chlordiazepoxide, partial agonist ZK 91 296, mixed agonist/antagonist CGS 9896 and antagonist RO 15-1788 blocked the FG 7142 cue. These res

Repeated exposure to diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) produces increased sensitivity to cholinergic antagonists in discrimination retention and reversal.

This experiment examined the effects of repeated exposure to diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP), an organophosphate anticholinesterase, on the retention and reversal of a visual discrimination and on the number of muscarinic receptors in the brain. Rats were trained in a serial reversal procedure. After achieving stable performance, the rats were divided into two groups. One group received repeated injections of DFP, the other group received injections. To determine whether DFP-treated rats would be more sensitive than normal rats to stresses on the cholinergic system, each rat was injected with

Stereotypes about people living with HIV: implications for perceptions of HIV risk and testing frequency among at-risk populations.

Although research continues to demonstrate that HIV stigma is associated with decreased HIV testing, the psychological processes implicated in this association remain unclear. The authors address this gap by differentiating between the HIV stigma mechanisms of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. They hypothesize that HIV stereotypes specifically, more so than prejudice or discrimination, are associated with HIV testing among at-risk populations. Ninety-three HIV-negative people receiving methadone maintenance therapy at a clinic in the northeastern United States participated by complet

Correlates of body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptoms in transgender and gender diverse populations: A systematic review.

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people face disproportionately high risk for body image concerns and disordered eating/eating disorders. However, strong explanatory models that integrate risk and protective factors specific to this population remain limited. This study addressed this gap through a systematic review of literature on body image concerns and disordered eating among TGD people. A systematic search identified 79 studies, with sample sizes ranging from single case studies to 3388 participants. Factors examined were grouped into sociocultural influences, stigma and discriminatio

HIV-related stigma and self-disclosure: the mediating and moderating role of anticipated discrimination among people living with HIV/AIDS in Akure Nigeria.

Although links between HIV-related stigma and self-disclosure of HIV status among people living with HIV have been well established, it is unclear whether levels of perceived discrimination are differentially associated with self-disclosure. The present study using a multi-factorial survey design investigated the role of stigma and other self-related factors (e.g., anticipated discrimination, self-esteem, HIV-related factors [e.g., drug use combination; knowledge of duration of HIV diagnosis] and socio-demographic factors [e.g., multiple spouse; age, gender, educational level] and psychologica

Vicarious Racial Discrimination and Mental Health among Adults: A Scoping Review of Literature Published between 2010 and 2023.

BACKGROUND: Research on vicarious racial discrimination and its relation to mental health outcomes has increased over the past decade. However, the literature on vicarious racial discrimination suffers from conceptual ambiguity. As such, we conducted a scoping review to help clarify the state of research on vicarious racial discrimination as a risk factor for mental health problems across ethno-racially minoritized adult populations. METHODS: We systematically searched ten databases for articles published from 2010 to 2023, using the terms 'vicarious discrimination' and 'mental health', follo

Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression for Social Epidemiologic Research.

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been devoted to framing multiple continuous social variables as a "mixture" for social epidemiologic analysis. We propose using the Bayesian kernel machine regression analytic framework that yields univariate, bivariate, and overall exposure mixture effects. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health, we conducted a Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis to study several individual, social, and structural factors as an exposure mixture and their relationships with psychological distress among individuals with at least one police

Mechanisms linking distal minority stress and depressive symptoms in a longitudinal, population-based study of gay and bisexual men: A test and extension of the psychological mediation framework.

OBJECTIVE: Gay and bisexual men have significantly higher rates of depression than heterosexual men. The minority stress theory (Meyer, 2003) proposed that distal minority stressors, like interpersonal discrimination, contribute to this disparity. The psychological mediation framework (Hatzenbuehler, 2009) posited several psychosocial mechanisms through which distal minority stress creates elevations in depression among sexual minorities. Despite accumulating support for this framework, there are a number of limitations to existing research, including largely relying on cross-sectional designs

Visible but unreported: a case for the "not serious enough" cases of child maltreatment.

This study examined the psychosocial characteristics of cases of child maltreatment labelled as "not serious enough." The sample consisted of cases of suspected physical abuse (N = 48), neglect (N = 13), and psychological maltreatment (N = 8) identified by teachers, and a nonabused comparison group (N = 283). Characteristics of children and their parents were evaluated at three ecological levels: individual, family, and social. Results indicated a poor personal and social adjustment of the children in the maltreatment groups, and suggest that the definition of cases of maltreatment as not seri

Worker health and well-being in Ontario's electrical sector: a quantitative study of occupational health outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: In Canada, Ontario's shortage of electricians is linked to high physical demands and psychosocial stressors that may undermine worker well-being. METHODS: Using a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) informed lens, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey of self-employed electricians in Ontario (n = 188), assessing musculoskeletal symptoms (12-month), sleep quality, psychological distress, burnout (personal, work-related), and job satisfaction. RESULTS: Overall, 90.2% reported at least one musculoskeletal symptom in the past 12 months. Regression analyses revealed that sle
