Journey from domestic violence to self-reliance: A case report from a tertiary care crisis center.

Domestic violence and abuse (DVA) remains a major public health and human rights concern, with profound consequences for women's physical, psychological, and socioeconomic well-being. We report the case of a 32-year-old married woman and mother of two who experienced prolonged domestic violence, including physical, emotional, and economic abuse, compounded by her husband's alcohol dependence. Economic abuse escalated when debt incurred through a self-help group loan, intended to support the family's livelihood, was transferred to the survivor, reinforcing financial dependency and coercive cont

Statistical Validation of Unsupervised Clustering for Adolescent TMD: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study employs unsupervised clustering to identify Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) phenotypes in adolescents, aiming to identify distinct clusters based on biopsychosocial features. It compares these clusters with conventional TMD classifications to assess if this method offers enhanced insights into TMD diagnosis. METHODS: Data from 662 adolescent patients with TMD were analyzed using unsupervised clustering and classified into four groups based on DC/TMD Axis I: 1 (disc displacement), 2 (joint pain), 3 (muscle pain), and 4 (combined joint and muscle pain). Patient-reported

Mental Health and Wellbeing of Rohingya Refugees: A Scoping Review.

Since 1978, the Rohingya population has faced multiple humanitarian crises, including racial disparities, which significantly escalated during 2017, leading to widespread exile from Myanmar. Reportedly, violence, persecution, and trauma have posed grievous impacts on the mental health of these forcibly displaced people. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the evidence regarding the overall epidemiologic burden of psychological problems of Rohingya refugees with their associated factors. We evaluated five major databases and additional sources till July 31, 2024, and included articles accor

Post-traumatic growth and its predictors among Syrian refugees in Istanbul: A mental health population survey.

AIMS: The negative mental health effects of exposure to trauma are well-documented. However, some individuals are theorized to undergo post-traumatic growth (PTG) after exposure to trauma, potentially experiencing positive psychological change across five domains: appreciation for life, relationships with others, new possibilities in life, personal strength, and spiritual change. PTG is less studied in forcibly displaced populations in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to explore levels of PTG and associated factors among Syrian refugee adults living in Istanbul, Turkey. METH

Direct and Indirect Associations Between War-Related Nightmares, Anxiety-Depression Symptoms, and Somatization in a Sample of Displaced Lebanese Adults During the 2024-2025 Lebanese War: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Somatization, the physical manifestation of emotional and psychological distress, is a prevalent issue in populations exposed to war and trauma. War-related nightmares are common among displaced individuals and are linked to depression, anxiety, and somatization. Yet, the indirect role of depression-anxiety in the association between war-related nightmares and somatization remains underexplored, particularly in the Lebanese context during the 2024-2025 war. This study aimed to examine whether war-related nightmares were associated with somatization both directly and indire

Digital Engagement and Sleep Dysregulation in Young Adults: A Narrative Review.

Digital technology is embedded in daily life, and growing evidence suggests that evening and bedtime screen engagement may disrupt sleep in young adults. Associations appear stronger for bedtime exposure and problematic or addiction-like patterns of use than for total screen time alone. This review aims to synthesize current evidence on the relationship between smartphone and social media use and sleep outcomes in young adults, with particular attention to the timing of device use, problematic digital engagement, and psychological or behavioral factors that may influence sleep. A narrative lit

Traditional practices in the postpartum period among Syrian refugee and Turkish women: A comparative study.

In this study, we examined the use of traditional postpartum practices among Turkish and Syrian refugee women within the framework of Transcultural Nursing Theory. Data were collected from 260 women through face-to-face questionnaires on sociodemographic characteristics, reproductive history, and traditional practices. Our results showed cultural differences: Turkish women often sought professional care, obtained postpartum information from nurses or midwives, and practiced rituals such as the forty-day bath, yellow cloth covering, and religious ceremonies. Syrian women reported more pregnanci

Does salivary cortisol serve as a potential biomarker for temporomandibular disorders in adults?

BACKGROUND: The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is multifactorial, involving a complex interplay of psychological and physiological factors. While salivary biomarkers, particularly cortisol, play an important role in TMD pathophysiology, evidence in the literature is still scarce and inconsistent. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the applicability of salivary cortisol as a potential biomarker for TMD in adults. METHODS: The Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) were used to accurately diagnose TMD patients. The study included adults, both male and female

Psychological impact of the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of PTSD, depression, and anxiety among Turkish adults.

BACKGROUND: The twin earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye, on February 6, 2023, caused widespread devastation and loss of life. Beyond the physical destruction, such large-scale disasters often result in significant psychological trauma. This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the prevalence and severity of probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety among adult Turkish survivors during the first 18 months post-disaster. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search of Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus was conducted for peer

Perceived stress and its associated factors among people living in post-war Districts of Northern Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: War and conflict environments result in long-term physical and psychological consequences. Sexual violence, displacement, malnutrition, death, illness, injury, torture, and disability are some of the physical effects, whereas stress, depression, aggressive behaviors, and anxiety are some of the emotional complications of war. Hence, evidence-based interventions are required particularly to monitor mental health disorders. Thus, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of perceived stress and its associated factors among people living in post-war situations, Northern Ethiopia. METHOD

The dynamic nature of refugee children's resilience: a cohort study of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

AIMS: Children's responses to war and displacement are varied; many struggle, while others appear resilient. However, research into these outcomes disproportionately focuses on cross-sectional data in high-income countries. We aimed to (1) investigate change in resilience across two timepoints in a highly vulnerable sample of Syrian refugee children in Lebanon, and (2) explore predictors of their mental health problems across time. METHODS: In total, 982 Syrian child-caregiver dyads living in refugee settlements in Lebanon completed questionnaires via interview at baseline and follow-up one y

Locating Masculinity in Men's Health Research, Policy, and Practice.

How masculinity is conceptualised shapes what men's health research and policy define as a problem and where intervention is directed. A substantial psychological and behavioural literature has operationalised masculinity-related constructs through individual measures of attitudes, conformity, and gender role conflict. These measures can produce useful evidence, but when individual scores are treated as proxies for masculinity itself, the individual risks becoming both the unit of measurement and the assumed location of the problem. This paper examines the movement from relational theories of
