Alkaline lakes are among the most bioproductive aquatic ecosystems on Earth. The factors that ultimately limit productivity in these systems can vary, but nitrogen (N) cycling in particular has been shown to be adversely affected by high salinity, evidently due to the inhibition of nitrifying bacteria (i.e., those that convert ammonic species to nitrogen oxides). The coastal plain of Coorong National Park in South Australia, which hosts several alkaline lakes along 130 km of coastline, provides an ideal natural laboratory for examining how fine-scale differences in the geochemistry of such env

Bhutan's scholarly traditional medical system is called Bhutanese Sowa Rigpa medicine (BSM). It was integrated with the modern healthcare system in 1967. Over 200 medicinal plants are used to produce more than 100 poly-ingredient medicinal formulations. Although BSM is supported by well-documented principles, pharmacopoeias, diagnostic procedures, treatment regimens, and traditional quality assurance systems, modern quality control parameters have become essential to distinguish closely related species and prevent contamination from exogenous impurities. This study aims to establish reliable a

The first incidence of COVID-19 was reported in the Wuhan city of Hubei province in China in late December 2019. Because of failure in timely closing of borders of the affected region, COVID-19 spread across like a wildfire through air travel initiating a pandemic. It is a serious lower respiratory track viral infection caused by highly contagious, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronavirus including COVID-19 causing SARS-CoV-2 causes zoonotic diseases and thought to be originated from bats. Since its first incidence, the virus has spread all across the world, ca

In Nigeria and tropical Africa, the bias towards the protection of natural sites on account of terrestrial biodiversity or their resultant ecosystem services has led to a considerably low number of freshwater conservation studies in the region. To close this gap, six lotic freshwater systems in three different natural sites (Obudu Mountains, Agbokim Waterfalls, and Cross River National Park) along the Cameroon border of Nigeria were evaluated for the biodiversity of macroinvertebrates and some aspects of water quality in December 2021 and March 2022. Among other macroinvertebrate-related indic

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality worldwide and shows a strong age-dependence that classical risk-factor models do not fully explain. A growing body of work indicates that aging is closely associated with CAD and, in preclinical models, can promote it through immunometabolic remodeling of the gut-liver-heart axis, in which bile acid metabolism is proposed to act as a central molecular link. Here we integrate cellular, molecular, and clinical evidence to outline how aging perturbs this axis and sustains chronic vascular inflammation. At the cell

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major global public health concern with the greatest burden in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. Uganda ranks among the world's highest burden countries, with its warm temperatures, abundant rainfall and diverse mosquito breeding habitats sustaining year-round malaria transmission in malaria endemic areas. This study assessed malaria incidence trends and their association with climate variables in Yumbe district, Uganda.
METHODS: A retrospective ecological time-series study analysed malaria incidence (2017-2021) in Yumbe district,

The presence of toxic metals in soil per se, and in soil impacted by mining, industry, agriculture and urbanisation in particular, is a major concern for both human health and ecotoxicology. The dual aim of this study was: to ascertain whether topsoil composition could influence the spatial distribution of mortality due to different types of cancer and to identify possible errors committed by epidemiological studies which analyse soil composition data as a closed number system. We conducted an ecological cancer mortality study, covering 861,440 cancer deaths (27 cancer sites) in 7917 Spanish m

Many plants and animals form specific symbioses with microorganisms, relying on bidirectional host-bacteria interactions. However, knowledge about the evolution of symbiont traits enabling such specificity remains limited. The bean bug Riptortus pedestris acquires Caballeronia from environmental soil and harbors it in its gut symbiotic organ. This bug-Caballeronia symbiosis is an ideal model to clarify the evolutionary process of symbiotic bacteria because members of outgroups, such as Paraburkholderia and Pandoraea, can also colonize the host symbiotic organ but are outcompeted when co-inocul

Mountain systems are natural laboratories for evolution, where rugged topography and ecological heterogeneity restrict gene flow. In the Hengduan Mountains, Neotetracus sinensis (N. sinensis), the sole species of its genus, occupies cool montane forests and has limited dispersal. Here we assemble a high-quality reference genome and resequenced individuals from two isolated ranges in Yunnan, specifically Gaoligong Mountains (GLG) and Wuliang Mountains (WL), to test how geographic isolation shapes genomic variation. Genome-wide SNPs reveal clear population structure, with PCA and phylogeny conco

Myxodavisia species are myxosporean parasites that primarily infect the urinary system or gallbladder of marine fishes, with only 32 species described previously. During an investigation of myxosporean species diversity in China, two new Myxodavisia species, Myxodavisia nehereus n. sp. and Myxodavisia indicus n. sp., infecting the gallbladders of Harpadon nehereus and Platycephalus indicus, respectively were found. Mature myxospores of M. nehereus n. sp. were hemispherical, measuring 9.3 ± 0.6 (8.2-10.4) μm in length, 12.9 ± 0.5 (12.0-13.8) μm in width, and 8.5 ± 0.3 (8.2-8.7) μm in thickness,

Widespread species complexes often contain hidden evolutionary diversity shaped by dispersal, isolation and climatic change. Here, we aimed to characterize geographic genetic structure within the Rhinolophus pusillus species complex, assess the concordance among genetic, morphological and acoustic patterns and the evolutionary distinctiveness of the Taiwan-endemic R. monoceros, and determine whether Quaternary changes in habitat suitability were geographically consistent with the inferred phylogeographic and demographic history. To address these objectives, we analyzed 378 individuals from 70

Phytophthora species are eukaryotic plant pathogens that cause root rot and dieback diseases in thousands of plant species worldwide. Despite their significant economic and ecological impacts, fundamental molecular tools such as DNA transformation methods are not yet established for many Phytophthora species. In this study, we have established a PEG/calcium chloride (CaCl2)-mediated protoplast transformation method for Phytophthora agathidicida, the causal agent of kauri dieback disease. Adapting a protocol from Phytophthora sojae, we systematically optimized the protoplast digesting enzymes,

Scale mites of the genus Geckobia (Pterygosomatidae) are highly specialized permanent parasites of geckos, but their diversity and ecology in arid environments remain poorly understood. We examined 1135 museum specimens of Ptyodactylus geckos collected from 1965 to 1991 across Israel and the West Bank's Mediterranean-desert climate gradient to investigate environmental effects on Geckobia mite distributions and population structure. We analyzed prevalence, intensity, population structure, and seasonal patterns across three climate zones using standard parasitological methods and Köppen-Geiger

Understanding the critical thresholds of dissolved oxygen (O2) that trigger adaptive physiological responses in aquatic organisms is long hampered by a lack of robust, non-lethal or non-invasive methodologies. The isotope fractionation of triple O2 isotopes (18O/17O/16O) during respiration is linked to the amount of oxygen utilised, offering a potential avenue for new insights. Our experimental research involved measuring the oxygen isotope fractionation of dissolved O2 in closed-system aquatic respirometry experiments with wild sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). These fish were either nat

BACKGROUND: Various morphological adaptations are associated with symbiotic relationships between organisms. One such adaptation is seen in the nemertean genus Malacobdella. All species in the genus are commensals of molluscan hosts, attaching to the surface of host mantles with a terminal sucker. Malacobdella possesses several unique characteristics within the order Monostilifera, exhibiting the terminal sucker and the absence of eyes and apical/cerebral organs, which are related to their adaptation to a commensal lifestyle. Nevertheless, the developmental processes that give rise to these mo

Primates have evolved sophisticated, visually guided reaching behaviors for interacting with dynamic objects, such as insects, during foraging.1,2,3,4,5 Reaching control in dynamic natural conditions requires active prediction of the target's future position to compensate for visuo-motor processing delays and to enhance online movement adjustments.6,7,8,9,10,11,12 Past reaching research in non-human primates mainly focused on seated subjects engaged in repeated ballistic arm movements to either stationary targets or targets that instantaneously change position during the movement.13,14,15,16,1

The pivotal role of amphibians in food webs and their value as indicators of disequilibrium in ecosystem health have long been recognized by wildlife biologists. However, massive pathogen-induced declines in global amphibian populations reported during the last 30 years served to alert the scientific community that knowledge of amphibian disease ecology, including parasitic and vector-borne conditions, was and remains incipient. Herein, we report the detection of a Rickettsia bacterium infecting larvae of the argasid tick Ornithodoros faccinii, collected from the toad Rhinella ornata, in South

BACKGROUND: Mortality from overdoses involving opioids in the United States (U.S.) has reached epidemic proportions. More research is needed to examine the underlying factors contributing to opioid-related mortality regionally. This study's objective was to identify and examine the county-level factors most closely associated with opioid-related overdose deaths across all counties in the U.S.
UNLABELLED: Methods: Using a national cross-sectional ecological study design, we analyzed the relationships between 17 county-level characteristics in four categories (i.e. socio-economic, availability

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Botrytis cinerea are closely related necrotrophic plant pathogenic fungi notable for their wide host ranges and environmental persistence. These attributes have made these species models for understanding the complexity of necrotrophic, broad host-range pathogenicity. Despite their similarities, the two species differ in mating behaviour and the ability to produce asexual spores. We have sequenced the genomes of one strain of S. sclerotiorum and two strains of B. cinerea. The comparative analysis of these genomes relative to one another and to other sequenced funga
