New Game-Theoretical Approach to Marketing Cooperatives in Fisheries.

While most game-theoretical models in fisheries deal with the conflict of exploitation of the same resource, unlike these models, the present paper is dedicated to marketing conflicts, always accounting for the underlying population dynamics. In the context of marketing cooperatives in fisheries, three models are combined: the classical fishing effort model based on logistic population dynamics, a game-theoretical model of the conflict between a marketing cooperative and its members, and a Cournot-type oligopoly market model. The latter, in particular, means that the market price is determined

Patient selection or rational patient choice? Insights from a hospital competition model with heterogeneous agents.

Hospitals differ along several dimensions, including ownership structure, strategic objectives, and resource capacity, while patients vary in illness severity, comorbidities, and other factors affecting their healthcare needs. Available empirical evidence of patient selection by hospitals, however, is rather limited. In this paper, we develop a theoretical model of quality competition under regulated prices that incorporates provider heterogeneity-such as distinctions between public and private hospitals-and patient heterogeneity in terms of illness severity. In our framework, hospitals are no

Estimating the potential impact of behavioral public health interventions nationally while maintaining agreement with global patterns on relative risks.

OBJECTIVE: This paper introduces a novel method to evaluate the local impact of behavioral scenarios on disease prevalence and burden with representative individual level data while ensuring that the model is in agreement with the qualitative patterns of global relative risk (RR) estimates. The method is used to estimate the impact of behavioral scenarios on the burden of disease due to ischemic heart disease (IHD) and diabetes in the Turkish adult population. METHODS: Disease specific Hierarchical Bayes (HB) models estimate the individual disease probability as a function of behaviors, demog

Gender Disparity Among Homeless People: Evidence From a Territory-Wide Survey in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined gender differences and their impact on the livelihoods of the homeless population in Hong Kong, exploring variables such as homeless duration, mental health, social relationships, economic status, risky behavior, and welfare assistance utilization. BACKGROUND: Gender inequalities worsen the health vulnerabilities of homeless women. While existing studies have focused on Western contexts, there is a lack of understanding in non-Western settings, especially in East Asian regions with a strongly patriarchal culture like Hong Kong. METHODS: Based on gender socializ

The Promise of Prevention Science for Addressing Intergenerational Poverty.

This paper reviews research suggesting that the prevention of intergenerational poverty will be enhanced if we add evidence-based family and school prevention programs to existing efforts to reduce poverty in order to address the adverse social environments that often accompany poverty. Government policies such as the Earned Income Tax Credit can reduce family poverty, but simply improving the economic stability of the family will not necessarily prevent the development of child and adolescent problems such as academic failure, antisocial behavior, drug abuse, and depression, all of which can

Low prospects and high risk: structural determinants of health associated with sexual risk among young African American women residing in resource-poor communities in the south.

African American women at increased risk of HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) may engage in risky sex as a coping mechanism for depressed economic conditions. This study examines the association between high-risk sexual behavior and structural determinants of sexual health among a sample of young African American women. 237 young African American women (16-19 years old) from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in North Carolina were enrolled into a randomized trial testing the efficacy of an adapted HIV/STI prevention intervention. Logistic regression analyses predicted the likelih

Smoking Cessation Potential of Smartphone-Assisted Behavioral Therapy Coupled to Programmable Carbon Nanotube Membrane Nicotine Delivery Device.

Smoking tobacco continues to be a worldwide major cause of premature death. Although combined behavioral and pharmacotherapy interventions can increase the smoking cessation rate to nearly 25%, the combined approach is generally economically unattainable, and the low success rate leaves large populations at risk. Reviewed are treatments following primarily the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), based on an addiction disease model with reduced dopamine receptors. Particular emphasis is placed on technology-assisted (Internet and smartphone a

The economic burden of Borderline Personality Disorder: direct and indirect costs, and evidence from evaluations of interventions.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by longstanding patterns of difficulty in functioning, and when left untreated, BPD can impose a substantial financial burden on individuals and society, in terms of higher healthcare costs as well as broader societal costs. AIMS: To conduct a critical review of the direct and indirect costs related to BPD. Additionally, to critically evaluate the economic evidence on interventions for BPD. METHODS: A comprehensive search strategy was conducted across PsycINFO, PubMed, and SCOPUS. Studies were screened in two phases: an initi

Risk Profiles of Women Experiencing Initial and Repeat Incarcerations: Implications for Prevention Programs.

Incarcerated women experience myriad individual, interpersonal, and structural factors leading to arrest and rearrest. This study examined risk profiles of women experiencing initial and repeat incarcerations. The sample included 521 women recruited from two prisons in North Carolina and enrolled in a HIV/STD risk-reduction intervention trial. Variables included socio-demographics, structural/economic factors, sexual and substance use behaviors, STDs, victimization history, and depressive symptoms. Bivariate and multivariable analyses identified risk differences. Compared to women incarcerated

Perspectives of Parents, School Nurses, and Pediatricians on Vaccine Hesitancy in St Louis County, Missouri.

OBJECTIVES: To gather perspectives on childhood vaccination and vaccine hesitancy, the Saint Louis County Department of Public Health (DPH) surveyed parents seeking nonmedical exemptions, conducted focus groups of school nurses, and interviewed pediatricians. METHODS: We distributed exemption forms and voluntary questionnaires to parents in St Louis County who were seeking nonmedical exemptions for their school-aged children at any DPH clinic from August 2019 through December 2022. We conducted and recorded four 75- to 90-minute focus groups of 11 school nurses in groups of 2 or 3 nurses in S

PRescribing Interventions for Chronic pain using the Electronic health record (PRINCE): Study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is a frequent source of pain treatment and opioid prescribing. The objective of the Prescribing Interventions for Chronic Pain using the Electronic health record (PRINCE) study is to assess the effects of two behavioral economics-informed interventions embedded within the electronic health record (EHR) on guideline-concordant pain treatment and opioid prescribing decisions in primary care settings. METHODS: Setting: The setting for this study is 43 primary care clinics in Minnesota. DESIGN: The PRINCE study uses a cluster-randomized 2 × 2 factorial design to test the

Making rights from wrongs: The crucial role of beliefs and justifications for the expression of aversive personality.

Whereas research focusing on stable dispositions has long attributed ethically and socially aversive behavior to an array of aversive (or "dark") traits, other approaches from social-cognitive psychology and behavioral economics have emphasized the crucial role of social norms and situational justifications that allow individuals to uphold a positive self-image despite their harmful actions. We bridge these research traditions by focusing on the common core of aversive traits (the dark factor of personality [D]) and its defining aspect of involving diverse beliefs that serve to construct justi

Opportunities for theory-informed decision science in cancer control.

Cancer prevention and control involves navigation of complex clinical decisions, often laden with uncertainty and/or intricate interpersonal dynamics, which have implications for both physical health and quality of life. Cancer decision-making research in recent decades has primarily focused on working to improve the quality of decisions by providing patients with detailed information about their choices and through an increased emphasis in medicine on the importance of shared decision making. This emphasis is reflective of a model of decision making that emphasizes knowledge, options, and del

An "economic" theory of addiction, hypomania, and sensation seeking.

Research into the relationship between mania, sensation seeking, and substance abuse has shown that hypomanics and sensation seekers use substances frequently and often for the purpose of adjusting their moods. This essay develops an "economic" theory of addiction that attempts to account for those phenomena. The theory also supports the notion that sensation-seeking behavior and variants of manic behavior share many of the characteristics of the addictive behaviors. Implications for the treatment of addictive behaviors are discussed. Data from drug users in the military (Navy) are presented t

Medical App Treatment of Non-Specific Low Back Pain in the 12-month Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial Rise-uP: Where Clinical Superiority Meets Cost Savings.

PURPOSE: Non-specific low back pain (NLBP) exerts a profound impact on global health and economics. In the era of Web 3.0, digital therapeutics offer the potential to improve NLBP management. The Rise-uP trial introduces a digitally anchored, general practitioner (GP)-focused back pain management approach with the Kaia back pain app as the key intervention. Here, we present the 12-months evaluation of the Rise-uP trial including clinical and economic outcomes, patient satisfaction and behavioral tracking analysis. METHODS: The cluster-randomized controlled study (registration number: DRKS0001

Modifying and developing health behavior.

The literatures on both behavior modification and behavioral development have engendered innovations in public health programs, addressing problems of patient adherance to preventive and therapeutic regimens, delay in seeking diagnosis of illness symptoms, risk-taking behavior, and other aspects of lifestyle associated with health. Because most of this literature derives from psychology, there has been a distinct bias in the construction of interventions, pointing them directly at individuals, usually in a counseling or small group mode of delivery. These developments served public health well

Maintenance chemotherapy in children with ALL exerts metronomic-like thrombospondin-1 associated anti-endothelial effect.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of obesity is greater among adults living in rural compared to urban areas of the USA. Greater obesity risk among rural adults persists after adjusting for obesity-related behaviors and sociodemographic factors. With the rural-urban obesity disparity greatest among younger adults, it is important to examine the complexity of factors that may increase the risk for excess body weight in this population so that effective preventive interventions can be implemented. College students residing in economically deprived rural areas such as rural Appalachia may be particula

Vaping and smoking as risk factors for arthritis: Evidence from double machine learning.

Smoking is a well-documented risk factor for chronic diseases, including arthritis. Vaping, often marketed as a safer alternative, has risen sharply, yet its implications for musculoskeletal health remain unclear. We examine the associations of vaping and smoking with arthritis using Double Machine Learning (DML), and present illustrative economic scenarios projecting the potential cost implications of arthritis cases associated with these behaviors. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), collected in the United
