Therapy, counselling and small-group learning: some similarities and differences examined from a linguistic viewpoint.

The growing use of small groups in educational settings, therapy and counselling contains a danger of confusion in the purposes of the three modes. A university course in psychosexual counselling (containing, therefore, elements of education, therapy and counselling) is analysed using a linguistic framework. The similarities the three modes have with each other are examined and the differences between therapy and counselling on the one hand, and education on the other, are illustrated. It is suggested that some understanding of the different linguistic rules used in the three modes will permit

Transforming Medical Education: Is Competency-Based Medical Education the Right Approach?

There is growing recognition within the medical education community that medical education in this country needs to be changed to better prepare doctors for the challenges they will face in providing their patients high-quality medical care. A competency-based medical education (CBME) approach was endorsed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Medical Specialties approximately 15 years ago, and a self-designated group-the International Competency-Based Medical Education (ICBME) Collaborators-is now calling on members of the medical education comm

An experiential learning model applied to nurses working with patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (C/D) is a rare neurological disease, transmissible, incurable and always fatal affecting humans, as well as animals. In the 1980s, the "mad cow disease" (MCD) epidemic in the United Kingdom popularized prion diseases worldwide. However, this contributed to the proliferation of disinformation, causing confusion between C/D and MCD in the public, as well as in some health care providers. The purpose of this article is to describe the process utilized to develop, implement, and evaluate a workshop on CJD for nurses and other health care providers. Kolb's experiential te

Implementing a patient self-medication program.

The ultimate goal of any rehabilitation program is to discharge patients into the community with the preparation they need to meet their healthcare requirements as independently as possible (White & Holloway, 1990). Rehabilitation patients actively participate in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and, if needed, speech therapy. They should also be actively involved in their medication programs. When patients leave the hospital setting, they will be expected to be independent in their medication management. A program in which patients receive instruction on medications and are permitted t

Medical Education Reform in China in the 21st Century: A Literature Review.

Facing resource shortages and increasing gaps between regions and populations during the 20th century, around the 70s, the Chinese government authorized local governments to independently operate their own medical system, including medical education, to provide basic medical services and meet healthcare needs. These multiple independent but unparallel medical education systems throughout the nation inevitably created education quality disparities. Around the beginning of the 21st century, the Chinese government started a medical education standardization reform. This study aims to review and c

Exploring Family Physician Training Needs to Improve Cancer Patient Care.

Family physicians have multifaceted roles in cancer patient care and oncology education among this group is unfortunately inadequate. This study explored the needs and perspectives of family physicians regarding their oncology training and experiences. As well, physician cancer care experiences, knowledge use, and continuing education practices were elucidated. The authors employed a qualitative approach with family physicians participating in semi-structured interviews. General practitioners in oncology were excluded. Purposeful sampling was used, with recruitment through Ontario regional pri

Words Matter: The Language of Leadership in Nursing Professional Development.

Every day, nursing professional development specialists shape culture through hundreds of conversations. They welcome new graduate nurses, coach experienced clinicians, facilitate difficult debriefings, mentor emerging leaders, and provide reassurance during moments of uncertainty. Although these conversations may seem routine, each represents a leadership intervention. Every word has the potential to build confidence, strengthen trust, encourage learning, or unintentionally diminish it.
