[UNAM: the importance of academic support for Allergy Clinic Immunology specialty].

At the end of the 18th Century, the history of immunology began in Mexico, with Francisco Xavier Balmis, who initiated the process of vaccination against smallpox. By doing this, he established the bases for research and clinical practice in this field of medicine. Among the pioneers of immunology in Mexico stand out Eduardo Licega, Maximiliano Ruiz Castañeda and Mario Salazar Mallén. This last one founded the first allergy laboratory located in the Hospital General de Mexico, becoming the first one of its nature in the entire nation as well as being recognized by Universidad Nacional Autónoma

The first homemade colonoscopy trainer.

Introduction Colonoscopy trainers have gained recognition for improving endoscopy skills and preparing for real procedures on humans. Unfortunately, due to their high price, commercial simulators are hard to obtain, especially for small medical centers. However, a solution might be to construct a device for themselves. Aim Our goal was to build a relatively cheap and easy-to-construct simulator for residents who want to start learning colonoscopy. Materials and methods The box model colonoscopy trainer was designed and constructed. The artificial colon was made from 2 layers of fabric and rubb

Delineating patient errors in an intracavernosal injection program.

BACKGROUND: Intracavernosal injection therapy (ICI) is a well-established therapeutic strategy for men with erectile dysfunction. Complications are often related to patient error when performong ICI. AIM: The objective of this study was to examine patient errors in an established patient training program for performing ICI and identify factors that could predict major errors. METHODS: Patients enrolled in our ICI program are trained on technical aspects, and dose titration is begun. Patients are given explicit instructions during training, both verbally and in written form. Records were revi

Exploring self-perceived preparedness for practice among pre and post Covid-19 graduates of Nigerian dental schools.

BACKGROUND: Examination results do not necessarily correlate with competence or preparedness for clinical practice. The overall preparedness of Nigerian Dental graduates for practice has never been evaluated; it is important to do so on a regular basis to allow for continuous improvement. We sought to elicit the perceptions of Nigerian dental students and interns regarding the roles of interns and their preparedness for intern tasks using the modified American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Graduation Questionnaire (GQ). METHODS: A survey of dental students at time of graduation, and inte

Radiation Oncology Education Across the Learning Continuum: Current Challenges and Future Directions.

Radiation oncology is critical to modern interdisciplinary cancer care, though exposure to radiation oncology remains limited across the medical education continuum. The practice of radiation oncology requires in-depth knowledge of evidence-based clinical oncology with highly technical and procedural practice competencies. This review defines the spectrum of teaching in radiation oncology, from effective teaching to scholarly teaching to scholarship of teaching and learning to support learners across the succession of medical education environments, spanning undergraduate, graduate, and contin

The ADAPT model: integrating employer insights into a framework for practice-ready health professions graduates.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare systems rely on a skilled and diverse workforce to deliver patient-centred care across settings. Rising patient acuity, rapid technological change, and interprofessional collaboration have heightened expectations for graduates to be "practice-ready" on entry to the workforce. Health professions education (HPE) must therefore extend beyond discipline-specific knowledge to prepare graduates for real-world practice. Employers, as key stakeholders, are uniquely positioned to assess this readiness, yet their perspectives are seldom explored. This study explores employer vie

Outcome survey of auditory-verbal graduates: study of clinical efficacy.

Audiologists must be knowledgeable about the efficacy of aural habilitation practices because we are often the first professionals to inform parents about their child's hearing impairment. The purpose of this investigation was to document the status of graduates of one aural habilitation option; auditory-verbal. A consumer survey was completed by graduates from auditory-verbal programs in the United States and Canada. Graduates were queried regarding degree and etiology of hearing loss, age of onset, amplification, and educational and employment history, among other topics. Results indicated t

Financial stress, attitudes toward money, and scores on a Dream Inventory.

During stock market losses in 2009 and high unemployment, ratings on the KJP Dream Inventory were correlated with factors of the Money Attitude Scale and items on the Contemporary Financial Stress Inventory for 71 graduate students in Counseling Psychology and Education. Correlations were significant for Retention on the Money Attitude Scale with Dissociative Avoidance (-.31), Dreams of falling (.26), Risk-taking in dreams (.24), and Dreaming of being chased (.28). Also, ratings for the Money Attitude Scale of Distrust correlated with Discontentedness in dreams (.33) and Dreams of being chased

[Communication in special situations: a training programme with standardized patients for emergency medical physicians].

Regulations for the post-graduate education of physicians deployed in the emergency medical system in Germany are existing, but unfortunately not standardised nationwide. Within the compulsory certification course "soft skills" are not incorporated resp. psychological disorders are not considered to an adequate extent. In respect of increasing emergency calls with psycho-social indications it seemed necessary to invent a specialised course concerning these issues. Integrating under-graduate experiences of classes with standardized patients, objectives were defined; a pilot course was composed

Financial Aid for Dental Students: Implications of Recent Legislation.

In July 2025, Congress enacted major reforms to higher education funding by passing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), overhauling federal student loan programs, setting limits on federal borrowing, and abruptly ending the Graduate PLUS loan program. These changes may significantly impact access to dental education-especially for students from low-income or underserved backgrounds-and further worsen the ongoing shortage of oral health clinicians in rural and underserved areas, whose populations already face challenges to receiving adequate oral healthcare.

Milestone Attainment of Accelerated 3-Year MD Graduates Compared to Nonaccelerated Graduates in Family Medicine Residency.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Accelerated 3-year programs (A3YPs) for an MD degree offer a condensed medical education pathway to residency, often with directed pathways in primary care. Many programs aim to address workforce shortages and decrease debt. As these programs expand, assessing whether A3YP graduates are as prepared for residency as their peers from traditional 4 year programs is critical. This study evaluates milestone attainment of A3YP postgraduates in Year 1 (PGY-1s) compared to non-A3YP PGY-1s within family medicine residency programs. METHODS: We analyzed the Accreditation Coun

Sexuality in the baccalaureate nursing curriculum.

One hundred and fifty-one baccalaureate nursing programs responded to a survey indicating how and to what extent concepts of human sexuality were incorporated into the nursing curricula. A majority of programs provided for all topic areas listed on the questionnaire with those related to reproduction being most prevalent in the curricula. Most respondents believed that baccalaureate graduates should be able to provide sex education for youth, counsel regarding healthy sex function, minimize the incidence of sexual dysfunction by educating adults, and counsel clients regarding sexual problems a

The Path to Independence: Progression in Entrustment Reflected in Entrustable Professional Activity Ratings.

BACKGROUND: In 2016 the American Board of Surgery introduced Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) as an assessment framework to support competency-based education within general surgery. EPAs operationalize milestones and competencies into a practical assessment framework, enabling timely, targeted feedback and progressive entrustment. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesize that variability in trainee entrustment may identify specific EPAs that function as performance targets, allowing earlier identification of trainees who may need additional support. METHODS: National ABS EPA data for PGY-1 throu

A Stepping Stone Toward Necessary Change: How the New USMLE Step 1 Scoring System Could Affect the Residency Application Process.

Score reporting for the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 will change from a 3-digit number to pass/fail as soon as January 1, 2022. The shift is meant to prevent residency program directors from using Step 1 scores to select applicants for interviews, a purpose for which the exam was not designed. Using Step 1 scores in this way also has put undue stress on medical students applying to residency. However, the score reporting change represents only one stepping stone toward an improved transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education. To enable a more reliable and h

The High Clinic: a pilot project of a new model for an outpatient, community-based teaching clinic in rheumatology.

The objectives were to develop an outpatient, community-based clinical education experience for second-year rheumatology fellows based on sound education principles, and to pilot the program to test its practicability and assess student perception of its educational efficacy. The outpatient clinical education experience consisted of four steps. In Step 1 second-year rheumatology fellows assessed patients and reviewed their cases with two supervisors. Step 2 entailed each fellow presenting a brief summary of each case to their colleagues and supervisors for discussion and analysis of learning i

Bridging research and practice: Co-constructing school psychology training within a university-district partnership.

Most states are experiencing a shortage of school-based mental health providers, such as school psychologists. This is coupled with an increase in the mental health needs of youth. School psychologists are well positioned to deliver mental health supports in schools. A collaborative partnership between school psychology graduate training programs and school districts to train school psychologists can improve the quality of training and confer mutual benefits. In this article, we describe a partnership between a school psychology graduate program and a school district in the training of school

Building on the 2025 National Academies Pharmacy Workshop: Clarifying Foundational and Specialization Competencies in PharmD Training.

OBJECTIVES: To synthesize available literature and guidance on competency expectations in PharmD education and to propose a practical framework that distinguishes foundational competencies required of all graduates from competencies best developed through structured specialization pathways. FINDINGS: Pharmacy practice is expanding across clinical, scientific, regulatory, public health, and technology-enabled roles, increasing pressure on PharmD curricula that are already densely packed. Reports and studies indicate that while foundational competencies are broadly endorsed, students' readiness
