Functional electric stimulation to enhance systemic fibrinolytic activity in spinal cord injury patients.

Functional electric stimulation (FES) of muscle has been used to decrease the incidence of postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in neurologically intact individuals. This study was undertaken in order to determine whether a large-scale trial should be initiated using FES to prevent DVT in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. The goals of this pilot study were to demonstrate the value of FES of calf musculature in (1) increasing plasma fibrinolytic activity and (2) promoting venous blood flow in the lower extremities. Plasma fibrinolytic activity was monitored in ten SCI patients before, imme…

[Experience with lateral electric surface stimulation in the treatment of progressive idiopathic scoliosis].

Due to incorrect use of nomenclature, scolioses are incorrectly classified in the paper by Altekruse and Heine. The angle measurement is inaccurate and does not correspond to Cobb's measuring method. The accuracy of the scientific statement and its value can be derived from this. The results of treatment obtained by Altekruse and Heine were improvement in or standstill of the scoliosis in 80% of the cases and progression in over 17%. This corresponds to the "Natural History of Scoliosis:" 5 to 25% of juvenile scolioses (age 3 to 10 years according to Drummont) are progressive, the figure for a

[Electric stimulation of the human olfactory nerve--an approach to short-term memory?].

Electrical stimulation of the human olfactory mucosa was performed by means of an electrode, which was attached to a rhinoscope. Stimulations of the nasal mucosa did not evoke the sensation of smell, but suppressed smell sensations of presented odorants. When electrical stimulation followed the exposure to an odorant within a certain interval, the stimulus recalled the faded sensation of the preceding odorant. Electrical stimulation without prior natural stimulation produced unpleasant sensations in three patients with a history of temporal lobe seizures and olfactory auras, but not in patient

Value of the isolated tensor tympani muscle reflex elicited by electric lingual stimulation.

A bilateral reflex contraction of the isolated tensor tympani muscle has been obtained in man by bipolar electric stimulation of the edge of the tongue (DC generator). The avoidance of the elevated and variable body electric resistance and of the variable contact resistance from the hand to the ground plate, represents an appreciable improvement of this method in comparison with the unipolar method described in a earlier paper. A further improvement has also been achieved by applying the electric stimulus to one inferior aspect of the tongue near the floor of the mouth, nearer to the lingual n…

Electric field and stimulating influence generated by deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this project was to develop a quantitative understanding of the volume of axonal tissue directly activated by deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN). METHODS: The 3-dimensionally inhomogeneous and anisotropic tissue medium surrounding DBS electrodes complicates our understanding of the electric field and tissue response generated by the stimulation. We developed finite element computer models to address the effects of DBS in a homogeneous isotropic medium, and a medium with tissue conductivity properties derived from human diffusion tensor magneti

Clinical elements for the neuromuscular stimulation and functional electrical stimulation protocols in the practice of neurorehabilitation.

The physicians and their multidisciplinary teams involved in the clinical practice of neurological rehabilitation have more and more opportunities to apply neuromuscular stimulation (NMS) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) of peripheral nerves as a part of their daily practice. In this article, we outline clinical protocols of NMS and FES in the following clinical conditions of upper motor neuron dysfunction: to prevent consequences of disuse of the neuromuscular system of the upper motor neuron, to facilitate recovery processes of impaired upper motor neuron functions due to acute an

Is the addition of vaginal electrical stimulation to transcutaneous tibial nerve electrical stimulation more effective for overactive bladder treatment? A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a prevalent disorder that increases with age and impairs patients' quality of life. Guidelines recommend behavior modifications as the first-line treatment; however, physiotherapy has also been used with success, safety, and low cost. Transcutaneous tibial nerve electrical stimulation (TTNS) and vaginal electrical stimulation (VS) are being used in clinical physiotherapy practice. This study aimed to verify whether the addition of VS to TTNS is more beneficial than TTNS alone for women with OAB. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 106 women a

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation after thoracotomy. Pain relief and peak expiratory flow rate--a trial of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Forty patients scheduled to undergo thoracotomy were randomly allocated to receive either transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with intramuscular papaveretum (20 patients) or intramuscular papaveretum alone (20 patients) for postoperative pain relief. Total intramuscular analgesic requirements in the first 24 hours, time to satisfactory transfer to oral analgesia, antiemetic requirements and length of stay in hospital postoperatively were noted. Peak expiratory flow rate was compared pre- and postoperatively in the two groups. Use of nerve stimulation did not significantly alter the req
