A Perspective on Tellurium/Selenium-Based Nanomaterials for Neuromorphic Computing.

The long-standing von Neumann architecture, while foundational to modern computing, intrinsically suffers from data-transfer inefficiency, which imposes severe limits on speed and energy efficiency in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and real-time data processing. Inspired by the remarkable energy efficiency of the human brain, neuromorphic computing seeks to emulate neural architectures through hardware capable of adaptive learning. Although early complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-based neuromorphic systems captured basic synaptic behaviors, their narrow dynamic ranges

Structural variability of dyads relates to calcium release in rat ventricular myocytes.

Cardiac excitation-contraction coupling relies on dyads, the intracellular calcium synapses of cardiac myocytes, where the plasma membrane contacts sarcoplasmic reticulum and where electrical excitation triggers calcium release. The morphology of dyads and dynamics of local calcium release vary substantially. To better understand the correspondence between the structure and the functionality of dyads, we estimated incidences of structurally different dyads and of kinetically different calcium release sites and tested their responsiveness to experimental myocardial injury in left ventricular my

Locus Coeruleus Stimulation Facilitates Long-Term Depression in the Dentate Gyrus That Requires Activation of β-Adrenergic Receptors.

Synaptic plasticity comprises a cellular mechanism through which the hippocampus most likely enables memory formation. Neuromodulation, related to arousal, is a key aspect in information storage. The activation of locus coeruleus (LC) neurons by novel experience leads to noradrenaline release in the hippocampus at the level of the dentate gyrus (DG). We explored whether synaptic plasticity in the DG is influenced by activation of the LC via electrical stimulation. Coupling of test-pulses that evoked stable basal synaptic transmission in the DG with stimulation of the LC induced β-adrenorecepto

The effects of naloxone, morphine and methionine enkephalinamide on Ia afferent terminations in the cat spinal cord.

Naloxone, morphine, Met5-enkephalinamide (MENKA) and procaine were administered microelectrophoretically near extracellularly stimulated extensor muscle group Ia afferent fibres and terminations in the lumbar spinal cord of cats anaesthetized with pentobarbitone sodium. Observations were made of effects on the electrical threshold, on the depolarizing action of GABA or piperidine-4-sulphonate (P4S), and on bicuculline-sensitive primary afferent depolarization (PAD) generated by tetanic stimulation of flexor muscle low threshold afferents. All 4 agents reversibly elevated the threshold of Ia fi

Short-term plasticity in glomerular inhibitory circuits shapes olfactory bulb output.

Short-term plasticity is a fundamental synaptic property thought to underlie memory and neural processing. The glomerular microcircuit comprises complex excitatory and inhibitory interactions and transmits olfactory nerve signals to the excitatory output neurons, mitral/tufted cells (M/TCs). The major glomerular inhibitory interneurons, short axon cells (SACs) and periglomerular cells (PGCs), both provide feedforward and feedback inhibition to M/TCs and have reciprocal inhibitory synapses between each other. Olfactory input is episodically driven by sniffing. We hypothesized that frequency-dep

MicroRNA alteration in cerebrospinal fluid from comatose patients with traumatic brain injury after right median nerve stimulation.

Electrical stimulation of the right median nerve can aid coma arousal after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study aimed to confirm the efficacy further and explore possible mechanisms of right median nerve electrical stimulation (RMNS). Five comatose patients after severe TBI from May to September 2020 in the Tianjin Medical University General Hospital received RMNS for 2 weeks besides standard management. After the 2-week treatment, the mean Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and neurophysiological examination were used. We then investigated the alterations in microRNA (miRNA) expression in cerebros

Modulation of synaptic transmission at Ia-afferent connections on motoneurons during high-frequency afferent stimulation: dependence on motor task.

1. Monosynaptic excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) were evoked in medial gastrocnemius motoneurons by maximal group Ia stimulation of the heteronymous lateral gastrocnemius-soleus nerve in anesthetized cats. Three different patterns of high-frequency stimulation were delivered to the nerve, and the EPSPs were averaged in register (1, 2, . . ., n) for each. 2. One pattern ("Burst") consisted of 32 shocks delivered every 2 s at an interstimulus interval of 6 ms (167 Hz). The second pattern ("Stepping") was a frequency-modulated burst of 52 shocks derived from a recording of a spindle dur

Mechanism of action of local anesthetics on synaptic transmission in the rat.

The mechanism of action of local anesthetics on synaptic transmission and their effects on synaptic components and on electrophysiologic properties of the nerve cell body are not clear. Therefore, the effects of lidocaine and bupivacaine on pre- and postsynaptic mechanisms underlying synaptic transmission in sympathetic ganglia were studied utilizing the techniques of intracellular recording and stimulation on isolated superfused superior cervical ganglia of rats. Lidocaine and bupivacaine either depressed or completely blocked synaptic transmission in sympathetic ganglia in a dose-dependent m

Somatostatin hyperpolarizes neurons and inhibits spontaneous activity in the rat dorsolateral septal nucleus.

Intracellular recordings were made from rat brain neurons in a submerged slice preparation containing the dorsolateral septal nucleus (DLSN). Somatostatin-14 (SS-14) was applied to these neurons by superfusing solutions containing known concentrations of the peptide or by pressure ejection from micropipettes. With either method of treatment, SS-14 produced membrane hyperpolarization and decreased membrane resistance in a concentration-dependent manner. The hyperpolarizing response to SS-14 occurred in virtually all neurons tested and appeared to result from a direct action on DLSN neurons medi

[Neuronal and synaptic mechanisms of cortical inhibition].

Data are presented concerning the latencies, amplitude and durations of IPSPs evoked in neurons of different cortical regions by peripheral and thalamocortical fibre stimulations and intracortical microstimulation in cat. The duration of IPSPs developing due to single afferent stimulus ranged between 20 and 250 ms (60-80 ms as a rule). In response to intracortical microstimulation monosynaptic IPSPs of 5-10 ms duration arose parallel with IPSPs of 20-100 ms duration. Barbiturates and chloralose increased the duration of IPSP up to 300-500 ms. The latencies of 73% of IPSPs evoked in the auditor

Local anesthetics and barbiturates: effects on evoked potentials in isolated mammalian cortex.

Slices of olfactory cortex from guinea pig, incorporating the lateral olfactory tract (LOT), were maintained in a glucose-bicarbonate solution in vitro. Stimulation of the LOT produced: 1) A summed LOT action potential; 2) A monosynaptic surface-negative wave (N-wave); and 3) A polysynaptic surface-positive wave (P-wave) as recorded from the pial surface of the slice at 24 degrees C. During a period of single stimulus pulses to the LOT, local anesthetics and barbiturates, applied to the incubating solution, depressed the amplitude of the action potential (while increasing its latency and thres

Experimental neonatal autoimmune myasthenia gravis: an immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and electrophysiological study of the motor end-plate.

Neonatal rats born of and nursed by mothers immunized with Narke japonica acetylcholine receptor protein had elevated serum anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies that reached the mother's level on day 10 after delivery and decreased rapidly after weaning. IgG was present at the motor end-plates up to day 170, and the motor end-plate fine structure remained abnormal up to day 80. Miniature end-plate potential amplitudes in the diaphragm were at the control levels within 10 days of birth, but were lower than those of the controls up to day 80 after birth. We could not obtain the direct evidence

A new form of cerebellar long-term potentiation is postsynaptic and depends on nitric oxide but not cAMP.

Long-term depression (LTD) at cerebellar parallel fiber (PF)-Purkinje cell synapses must be balanced by long-term potentiation (LTP) to prevent saturation and allow reversal of motor learning. The only previously analyzed form of cerebellar LTP is induced by 4-8 Hz PF stimulation and requires cAMP but not nitric oxide. It is a poor candidate to reverse LTD because it is presynaptically expressed whereas LTD is postsynaptic. We now characterize a new form of LTP induced by 1 Hz PF stimulation for at least 300 s. This LTP is postsynaptically expressed, enhanced by chelating postsynaptic Ca(2+),

Relations between long-term synaptic modifications and paired-pulse interactions in the rat neocortex.

The phenomenon of paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) was exploited to investigate the role of presynaptic mechanisms in the induction and maintenance of long-term synaptic plasticity in the neocortex. Long-term potentiation (LTP) and depression (LTD) were induced without afferent activation by applying tetani of intracellular pulses. Our results show that synaptic modifications closely resembling LTP and LTD can be induced by postsynaptic activation alone. The polarity of these synaptic modifications depends on initial properties of the input, as indicated by a correlation between initial PPF rat

[The action of the venom of the spider Eresus niger on the neuromuscular synapses of the frog].

The effect of Eresus niger spider venom on frog neuromuscular preparations has been studied using the intracellular microelectrodes. The spider venom has been found to block both spontaneous and elicited transmitter release and possesses the phospholipase activity. It has been suggested that the venom blocking synaptic transmission results from its phospholipase activity by analogy with the action of snake presynaptic neurotoxins.
