Peripheral lymphography was carried out in 17 patients with elephantiasis and microfilaremia (Brugia malayi) and the findings compared to ten patients with "idiopathic tropical eosinophilia." There were extensive changes in peripheral lymphatic and regional nodal architecture in each group suggesting that "occult filariasis" is the cause of idiopathic tropical eosinophilia.

The erysipelatous inflammation is characterized by a persistent course, tendency to increase of complicated forms, often followed by cases of the development of elephantiasis and frequent recidivations. The method of scraping of the epidermis is thought to be most informative. The complex treatment should include endolymphatic injections of antibiotics which is found to shorten the period of treatment and reduce the amount of recurrences.

Filariasis is endemic in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Lymphatic filariasis presents commonly as hydrocele, lymphocele, lymphadenopathy, pitting edema, elephantiasis, or subclinical microfilaremia. Here, we present a case of filariasis presenting as a retroperitoneal cyst, which was diagnosed on identification of microfilaria in the cyst fluid and cyst wall.

Chylous discharge or "chylorrhea" from the scrotum secondary to filariasis is an infrequent manifestation. With the availability of effective medical therapy for filariasis, it has become even more unusual. We report on 2 patients who presented to us with a persistent milky white discharge from the vesicles on the scrotal surface, which otherwise showed no evidence of elephantiasis.

We assessed the filariasis disease burden in four northeastern provinces of Cambodia by using and validating a key-informant questionnaire, consisting of four questions, with pictures of patients with leg elephantiasis and hydrocoele. The questionnaire was distributed and collected through the school, health and administrative systems. Validation surveys included clinical examination, a card test for W. bancrofti (ICT Filariasis card test, AMRAD) and night blood finger prick examination of patients reported with clinical elephantiasis. Only 48.0% of questionnaires were returned. A total of 220…

A polymerase chain reaction assay based on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (PCR-ELISA) has been developed to detect Brugia malayi infection in an area of low endemicity in Malaysia. Blood samples from 239 subjects were tested: 192 amicrofilaraemic individuals, 14 microfilaraemic persons and 3 chronic elephantiasis cases from endemic areas and 30 city-dwellers (non-endemic controls). PCR products were examined by ELISA and Southern hybridization. In the PCR-ELISA, digoxigenin-labelled PCR products were hybridized to a biotin-labelled probe. This was followed by incubation in streptavidin-…

A population of 164 adult individuals resident in an area endemic for Brugia malayi lymphatic filariasis has been studied for humoral immune responses to filarial parasites. Antibody levels to Ag extracted from adult worms were determined for each of the IgG subclasses, for IgM and for IgE. The dominant isotype of antifilarial antibody was IgG4, which represented 88% of total IgG in asymptomatic microfilaremics, most of whom possessed 100 to 1000 micrograms/ml of specific antibody of this subclass (geometric mean 762 micrograms/ml). Patients with chronic disease (elephantiasis), who were gener…

Local host immune responses to the lymphatic-dwelling filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti are important in the pathogenesis of the lymphangitis that leads to filarial elephantiasis. That the lymphatic endothelial cells may be important in this inflammatory process was shown by the ability of supernatants generated from filarial Ag-driven PBMC of individuals with filarial elephantiasis caused by W. bancrofti infection to up-regulate class I MHC expression on human umbilical vein endothelial cells when compared to unstimulated control supernatants from the same individual (relative fluorescen…

BACKGROUND: Hyperkeratotic psoriasis is a rare variant that includes forms such as elephantiasis, considered the rarest. It is characterized by thick, persistent plaques, resembling elephant skin, located mainly on the extremities and buttocks. Early detection and appropriate treatment, including systemic therapies, are essential for its management.
CLINICAL CASE: A 58-year-old male patient presented in 2018 with dermatosis on his forehead, right elbow, and the backs of both hands. He was initially diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis and chronic lichen simplex and received multiple topical t…

The global lymphatic filariasis elimination programme incorporates disability management along with transmission control, to ensure 'a visible impact' on those who are already affected by the disease. The common manifestations of lymphatic filariasis like lymphoedema; elephantiasis and hydrocele result from irreversible damage caused to the lymphatics by the adult worms. Only palliative treatment in the form of physical methods and surgery is available for lymphoedema and elephantiasis. Hydrocele can be corrected by surgery. The most distressing aspect of lymphatic filariasis is the attacks of…

The clinical and parasitologic aspects of filariasis were investigated in 459 inhabitants of a South Pacific island endemic for subperiodic Wuchereria bancrofti filariasis. Episodes of filarial fevers, usually with concomitant lymphangitis and/or lymphadenitis, were experienced by 26%. Lymphobstructive lesions, manifest in the later decades of life, were present in 12 with elephantiasis and 24 with hydroceles. Microfilaremia was detectable by membrane filtration of 1 ml of blood in 33% of persons, with a quarter of these having less than 50 microfilariae/ml. Microfilaremia and filarial fevers …

Filariasis is found in many tropical and subtropical countries. Approximately 10% of patients with filariasis enter the end stage of the disease known as elephantiasis. The obstruction of the lymphatic system leads to massive swelling and ulceration, especially of the legs, causing deformity and difficulty in movement and function. The condition is preventable with control of the vector and early drug therapy.

Filariasis is a parasitic condition in which the lymphatic system is invaded by filarial nematodes. The initial signs are those of lymphangitis and lymphadenitis. The manifestations include edema in the extremities and elephantiasis due to lymphatic obstruction. Filariasis is endemic to most parts of the world, but occurs only sporadically in Turkey. This report describes a case of filariasis in a child who presented with fever and extensive lower-extremity edema.
