Meta-emotion-regulation: a conceptual framework for influencing emotion regulation behaviour.

If the short-term effectiveness or long-term adaptivity of emotion regulation (ER) depends on the specific ER (covert or overt) behaviours that are executed, it is important to know how to influence those behaviours. Whereas ER refers to influencing emotions, meta-emotion-regulation (MER) refers to influencing ER behaviours. Instead of trying to close the gap between desired and perceived emotion (like ER), MER tries to close the gap between intended and actual ER behaviour. We show how the concept of MER extends previous ideas by focusing on the determinants of ER choice and behaviour. Furthe…

Emotion dysregulation and parent emotion socialization in mothers with and without borderline pathology.

BACKGROUND: Mothers with borderline personality disorder face unique challenges in parenting, as borderline symptoms have been shown to negatively affect parent-child relationships. These challenges can lead to non-supportive reactions to children's negative emotions, a form of parent emotion socialization (PES) that has been linked to negative outcomes in children. Given the inherent emotional arousal evoked by parenting, emotion dysregulation likely influences the type of PES parents utilize. However, few studies have specifically examined how emotion dysregulation affects PES in mothers wit…

Parental Emotion Socialization and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation in Adolescents: A Network Analysis.

Parental emotion socialization strategies influence adolescent emotion regulation development. However, there are still doubts about the supportive/unsupportive role of each strategy. This may be likely due to limitations of prior research that analyzed these strategies in isolation, without considering their interdependence. This study explored interactive patterns among parental strategies, clarifying which combinations were associated with fewer emotion regulation difficulties. Participants were 503 adolescents (60.8% female; Mage = 14.54; SDage = 1.17). Network and Expected Symptom Activit

Childhood emotional maltreatment and emotional intelligence in adolescents: The mediating role of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND: Childhood emotional maltreatment is detrimental to adolescents' emotional intelligence. However, most research has concentrated on the overall experience of childhood emotional maltreatment, leaving the outcomes of specific types of emotional maltreatment (i.e., emotional abuse and emotional neglect) and the mechanisms underlying these effects largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: Guided by the dimensional theory and the family risk factor model, this study used a two-wave longitudinal design to explore the association between two types of childhood emotional maltreatment and emotional i

Emotional regulation strategies in daily life: the intensity of emotions and regulation choice.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation is an adaptive ability affecting people's physical and mental health, quality of life and functioning. In the present study we focused on the influence of the intensity of experienced emotions on emotion regulation strategies (ERS) that are applied in everyday life. METHODS: For 7 days the participants kept an online diary where every day they described the situation which had aroused their strongest negative emotions. Next, they identified the emotions, their intensity and the type of applied strategies (acceptance vs. reappraisal vs. rumination vs. distraction …

Emotional Reactivity, Emotion Regulation, and Regulatory Choice in Somatic Symptom Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the transdiagnostic importance of emotional dysregulation in psychopathology, the exact nature of emotional dysregulation … ignificantly more effortful ( p = .038, d = -0.38). CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that dysregulated emotions might not result from lacking abilities in implementing ER effectively, but rather could arise from less frequent ER initiation because ER is perceived as more effortful.

The influence of childhood emotional neglect on emotional face processing in young adults.

Childhood emotional neglect (CEN) refers to a failure to meet the basic emotional needs of a child, which can seriously impact interpersonal communication and psychological health in young adults. Emotional face processing is critical in interpersonal communication; however, whether CEN affects this processing in young adults has not been investigated. Therefore, the current study aimed to explore the effects of CEN on emotional face processing in young adults. Using the Child Trauma Questionnaire, an online survey was conducted with 5010 students from four universities in Tianjin, China. Afte

The role of sex and emotion on emotion perception in artificial faces: An ERP study.

Sex has a significant impact on the perception of emotional expressions. However, it remains unclear whether sex influences the perception of emotions in artificial faces, which are becoming popular in emotion research. We used an emotion recognition task with FaceGen faces portraying six basic emotions aiming to investigate the effect of sex and emotion on behavioural and electrophysiological parameters. 71 participants performed the task while EEG was recorded. The recognition of sadness was the poorest, however, females recognized sadness better than males. ERP results indicated that fear, …

Emotion recognition, alexithymia, empathy, and emotion regulation in women with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with challenges in recognizing, understanding, and interpreting one's own and other's emotional states, feelings, and thoughts. It is unknown whether difficulties in emotion processing occur independently of common comorbid symptoms of AN and predict acute eating disorder characteristics. We aimed to examine emotion recognition, alexithymia, emotion regulation, and empathy in individuals with AN and to assess whether these predict eating disorder symptoms independently from comorbid symptoms. METHODS: Participants included 42 women with AN and 40 h

Emotion experience and expression goals shape emotion regulation strategy choice.

Research has begun to investigate how goals for emotion experience-how people want to feel-influence the selection of emotion regulation strategies to achieve these goals. We make the case that it is not only how people want to feel that affects strategy selection, but also how they want to be seen to feel. Incorporating this expressive dimension distinguishes four unique emotion goals: (1) to experience and express emotion; (2) to experience but not express emotion; (3) to express but not experience emotion; and (4) to neither experience nor express emotion. In six experiments, we investigate

This further elaborates the existing understanding of a relationship between poverty exposure and emotion recognition, informing future studies examining expression recognition as a mechanism involved in developing psychopathology.

Exercise as a buffer against difficulties with emotion regulation: A pathway to emotional wellbeing.

Though exercise is associated with emotional health, it remains unclear what psychological processes account for this relationship. The pres … xercise did not affect initial reactions to the stressor or reports of struggling to regulate one's emotions. However, it attenuated the effects that rumination and difficulties with emotion regulation had on delaying emotional recovery. Results suggest that enhanced emotional resilience to the prolonged effects of stress accounts, at least in part, for th …

Effects of temperament and emotion regulation styles in determining negative emotional states.

INTRODUCTION: The interplay of reactive and regulatory temperamental processes appears to be essential for a better understanding of emotional states and disorders. In this study we explored the prospective relationship between reactive temperament (negative affect), regulatory temperament (effortful control), negative emotion regulation styles (rumination and suppression) and self-recorded anxiety, worry, and avoidance in naturalistic conditions. METHOD: Thirty-two young adults were first assessed through questionnaires on negative affectivity, effortful control, and two forms of negative em

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms and infant emotional reactivity and emotion regulation.

The current study examined associations between maternal posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and infant emotional reactivity and emotion regulation during the first year of life in a primarily low-income, urban, ethnic/racial minority sample of 52 mother-infant dyads. Mothers completed questionnaires assessing their own trauma exposure history and current PTSD and depressive symptoms and their infants' temperament when the infants were 6 months old. Dyads participated in the repeated Still-Face Paradigm (SFP-R) when the infants were 6 months old, and infant affective states were code

Specifying emotional information: Regulation of emotional intensity via executive processes.

The degree of specificity at which emotional information is activated might determine evoked emotional intensity. However, the nature of this effect remains unclear. Four studies tested (a) whether people hold the naïve theory that activating specific details of emotional information arouses acute feelings; (b) whether an emotionally distressed population (social phobics) also holds that theory; and (c) whether voluntarily focusing on specific aspects of a distressing situation reduces its emotional impact. Results indicate that control as well as emotionally distressed people hold a naïve the

Emotional and non-emotional facial behaviour in patients with unilateral brain damage.

Aspects of emotional facial expression (responsivity, appropriateness, intensity) were examined in brain-damaged adults with right or left hemisphere cerebrovascular lesions and in normal controls. Subjects were videotaped during experimental procedures designed to elicit emotional facial expression and non-emotional facial movement (paralysis, mobility, praxis). On tasks of emotional facial expression, patients with right hemisphere pathology were less responsive and less appropriate than patients with left hemisphere pathology or normal controls. These results corroborate other research find

Benzodiazepine receptors in "emotional" and "non-emotional" mice; comparison of four strains.

The binding of 3H-diazepam to membrane benzodiazepine receptors was examined in four inbred strains of mice. "Emotional" or "anxious" BALB/cJ mice had significantly lower specific benzodiazepine binding when compared with three other "non-emotional" strains. Scatchard analysis demonstrated that the lower specific benzodiazepine binding is the result of a lower density of receptors in the "emotional" BALB/cJ mice. These results reinforce the contention that a system involving the benzodiazepine receptor may play a role in emotional behavior.

Negative Emotions Induce Urticaria by Regulating Metabolites: A Two-Step Mendelian Randomization Study.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have indicated a potential link between emotions and urticaria. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the causal relationships between negative emotions, circulating metabolites, and urticaria and its subtypes, and to assess the mediating effects of circulating metabolites. METHODS: Instrumental variables for eight negative emotions, 1400 circulating metabolic factors, and urticaria were sourced from publi…

Beyond positivity: A review of the functional outcomes of negative emotions at work.

Organizational scholars examining the effects of emotions on employees generally assume that negative emotions produce negative outcomes. However, a nascent body of research challenges this view, suggesting that negative emotions can help employees navigate work demands arising from disruptive external events. We draw on the COVID-19 pandemic-a salient, prolonged event that stimulated widespread negative emotions-as a theoretically meaningful context to explore when and why negative emotions may yield beneficial outcomes. Specifically, we provide an integrative conceptual review synthesizing r…
