[Familial form of primary cancer of the parathyroid glands. A disease entity or incidental association?].

Three cases of parathyroid neoplasms in familial hyperparathyroidism are reported. There were not associated with other endocrine glands or parathyroid glands lesions. Parathyroid gland carcinoma was diagnosed in 2 cases. Review of 7 cases of familial parathyroid carcinoma, diagnosed in 5 different families and issued from the literature, indicates that it can be associated to multiple endocrine neoplasia or other parathyroid lesions. The familial parathyroid carcinoma entity needs further studies before to be fully recognised.

Hyperplasia versus adenoma in endocrine tissues: are they different?

The traditional view holds that hyperplasia of endocrine glands is secondary to oversecretion of a trophic hormone. However, in most cases, the mechanism underlying this growth is the spontaneous proliferation of benign neoplasias. Pathologists still depend on subtle morphological criteria to delineate and further classify these tumours. Owing to their variable architecture, a bewildering nomenclature has emerged for these tumours, exemplified by the many names applied to the goitrous thyroid gland: hyperplasia, adenomatous goitre, adenomatoid nodules, benign nodular thyroid disease, adenoma, …

Impact of Acute Pancreatic Injury on Sphingolipid Metabolism in the Salivary Glands.

Acute pancreatic injury can be related to both parenchymal (responsible for exocrine functions) and islet (mainly β-cells, responsible for endocrine functions) damage. During embryonic development, both the salivary glands and the pancreas originate from the foregut, which explains many of the observed histological and functional similarities between these two organs. The relationship between several diseases of the pancreas and salivary glands, resulting from morphological and functional similarities, is well established. Sphingolipids constitute a class of biologically active molecules invol

A novel subtyping of intestinal metaplasia of the stomach, with special reference to the histochemical characterizations of endocrine cells.

Intestinal metaplasia of the stomach was grouped into 3 subtypes (A, B and C) according to the degree of pyloric gland involution which was judged from patterns of paradoxical Concanavalin A staining after Katsuyama and Spicer. The appearance of endocrine cells was investigated with immunohistochemical and silver methods. Type A metaplasia with slightly to moderately atrophic pyloric glands corresponded to the incomplete type in the previous classification, while Type C showing complete disappearance of pyloric glands corresponded to the complete type. Type B with severely atrophic pyloric gla

[Endocrine Organ Dysfunction with Immune-Checkpoint Inhibitors].

Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated antigen 4(CTLA-4), programmed death 1(PD-1), and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1)are referred to as immune-checkpoints. CTLA-4 is located on the surface of activated T-cells, therefore inhibiting binding of CD28 to B7 molecule on antigen presenting cells. The CTLA-4 pathway predominantly acts in lymph nodes. PD-1 is majorly expressed on T-cells. The PD-1 pathway is involved with tumor microenvironment. Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs)are monoclonal antibodies to these molecules and are promising novel agents for malignant tumor treatment. ICIs promote T-ce

The Role of Adipokines in the Control of Pituitary Functions.

The pituitary gland is a key endocrine gland in all classes of vertebrates, including mammals. The pituitary gland is an important component of hypothalamus-pituitary-target organ hormonal regulatory axes and forms a functional link between the nervous system and the endocrine system. In response to hypothalamic stimuli, the pituitary gland secretes a number of hormones involved in the regulation of metabolism, stress reactions and environmental adaptation, growth and development, as well as reproductive processes and lactation. In turn, hormones secreted by target organs at the lowest levels

Cutaneous manifestations of pituitary gland diseases.

The pituitary gland is also known as the "master" gland of the endocrine system, because it controls the functions of the other endocrine glands. From its lofty position in the sella turcica it sends signals to the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, ovaries and testes. It modulates the production of a variety of hormones that have dramatic effect on metabolism, blood pressure, sexuality, reproduction, growth, milk production and other vital body functions and therefore are essential for homeostasis. Since changes of the internal environment often mirrors in the skin, this article will focus on the…

Intestinal metaplasia of the gallbladder: a morphologic and immunocytochemical study.

The morphologic spectrum of intestinal metaplasia was studied in 49 gallbladders that had been excised because of cholelithiasis. Based on the absence or presence of endocrine cells, the cases of intestinal metaplasia were arbitrarily divided into two groups. The gallbladders from the first group (26 cases) contained isolated or small clusters of mature goblet cells, while those from the second group (23 cases), in addition to the goblet cells, contained argyrophil and argentaffin cells and, less frequently, Paneth cells and gland-like structures similar to colonic crypts. Pseudopyloric glands

Polyglandular autoimmune syndromes.

Dysfunction of multiple endocrine glands may develop as the result of hypopituitarism, various infiltrative disorders, or an organ-specific autoimmune mechanism. When dysfunction of two or more endocrine glands occurs in association with circulating organ-specific antibodies directed against the involved glands, the term polyglandular autoimmune syndrome is applied. Characteristics of polyglandular autoimmunity include specific patterns of disease association and frequently a family history of similar involvement. The principal endocrine components of these syndromes are adrenal insufficiency,…

Immunofluorescence studies of gastric heterotopia of the small intestine in Crohn's disease.

A patient with long-standing Crohn's disease of the large and small intestine was found to have extensive gastric metaplasia of the ileum. Most metaplastic glands were of the pyloric type, but numerous oxyntic glands with parietal and chief cells were also seen. By immunofluorescence the chief cells contained both the group I and group II pepsinogens, while the pyloric gland cells contained only the group II pepsinogens. Gastric-containing or other endocrine cells were not detected in the metaplastic pyloric and oxyntic glands. The latter findings are consistent with the concept expressed by P

[Are all animal and human organs and tissues endocrine in nature and are they secreting peptide hormones into blood?].

Endocrinology was born and developed as the science of endocrine glands and the human and animal diseases induced by the gland dysfunctions. The complex of endocrine glands included pituitary, thyroid and parathyroid glands, adrenals, pancreas and gonads. Further, it has been shown that certain brain structures, hypothalamus in particular, are also endocrine organs which secrete in blood a large number of various peptide hormones. Heart secretes in blood the peptide compound natriuretic hormone which regulates the sodium balance. Recent studies have been demonstrated that the adipose tissue ce…

Aquaporins in Glandular Secretion.

Exocrine and endocrine glands deliver their secretory product, respectively, at the surface of the target organs or within the bloodstream. The release of their products has been shown to rely on secretory mechanisms often involving aquaporins (AQPs). This chapter will provide insight into the role of AQPs in secretory glands located within the gastrointestinal tract, including salivary glands, gastric glands, duodenal Brunner's glands, liver, gallbladder, intestinal goblets cells, and pancreas, as well and in other parts of the body, including airway submucosal glands, lacrimal glands, mammar…

Perspectives in Pediatric Pathology, Chapter 22. Testicular Involvement in Systemic Diseases.

Normal testicular physiology requires appropriate function of endocrine glands and other tissues. Testicular lesions have been described in disorders involving the hypothalamus-hypophysis, thyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, liver, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract. Testicular abnormalities can also associate with chronic anemia, obesity, and neoplasia. Although many of the disorders that affect the above-mentioned glands and tissues are congenital, acquired lesions may result in hypogonadism in children and adolescents.

Genetic ablation of parathyroid glands reveals another source of parathyroid hormone.

The parathyroid glands are the only known source of circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH), which initiates an endocrine cascade that regulates serum calcium concentration. Glial cells missing2 (Gcm2), a mouse homologue of Drosophila Gcm, is the only transcription factor whose expression is restricted to the parathyroid glands. Here we show that Gcm2-deficient mice lack parathyroid glands and exhibit a biological hypoparathyroidism, identifying Gcm2 as a master regulatory gene of parathyroid gland development. Unlike PTH receptor-deficient mice, however, Gcm2-deficient mice are viable and ferti

A light microscopic and immunocytochemical study of the gastrointestinal tract of the ostrich (Struthio camelus L.).

Although the histological features and endocrine cells of the gastro-intestinal tract of the chicken have been well studied, little is known about these features of the gut of the ostrich. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the histology and peptide-storing endocrine cells of the ostrich. As a rule the histological features of the gastro-intestinal tract of the ostrich corresponded to that of the fowl. However, certain differences were observed. The superficial proventricular glands were simple, branched tubular glands, while the deep proventricular glands were restricted to a slipp

Are preoperative sestamibi scans useful for identifying ectopic parathyroid glands in patients with expected multigland parathyroid disease?

BACKGROUND: The role of preoperative localization studies in patients with hyperparathyroidism and expected multigland disease remains poorly defined. Our study investigates the usefulness of obtaining preoperative sestamibi scans and ultrasonography of the neck in identifying ectopic glands in this group of patients. METHODS: Under Institutional Review Board approval, we performed a retrospective review of patients who underwent operation for secondary hyperparathyroidism, tertiary hyperparathyroidism, lithium-induced hyperparathyroidism, and multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome at a tertia

[Electron microscopic verification of adenocarcinoma of the cardioesophageal area].

Normal gastric and esophageal cardiac glands as well as proper esophageal glands were studied electron-microscopically. Cardiac gastric and esophageal glands were found to differ by chief cells available in the gastric glands and greater amounts of endocrine cells registered in the esophageal glands. The evidence can provide grounds for electron microscopic verification of cardioesophageal adenocarcinoma permitting the pathologist to rest upon the presence of cells resembling those of proper gastric glands and epigastric fossa. In addition, it can promote specification of the morphologic type
