BACKGROUND: The relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cognitive dysfunction is still debated, and the mechanisms underlying cognitive dysfunction caused by CKD are still not fully understood.
METHODS: This study aimed to explore the potential genetic causality between CKD and cognitive dysfunction using two-sample Mendelian randomization. Furthermore, mediated Mendelian randomization was used to investigate potential genetic mechanisms. A total of 15 genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets were utilized: six for CKD-related traits (N ≈ 25,000-383,000), eight for cognitiv

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by cyst formation in the kidneys, and is associated with an elevated risk of intracranial aneurysms (IAs). Although a family history is a recognized risk factor for IAs in patients with ADPKD, emerging research suggests that gut microbiome composition may influence IA development. We investigated the relationship between the gut microbiome and the development of IA in patients with ADPKD. We recruited patients with ADPKD with (IA group) and without (non-IA group) IA from Osaka University between October 20

Over the past few decades, there has been a surge in global study on the relationship between gut microbiota and human health. Numerous human illnesses have been linked to dysbiosis. Gram-positive firmicutes and Gram-negative bacteroidetes are the two leading bacterial phyla that make up 90% of the gut microbiome. Many symbionts in the gut environment establish intricate relationships with host defense to stop both local and non-native dangerous bacteria from colonizing and invading. Dysbiosis alters the paracellular route and damages the epithelium, enabling them to penetrate the epithelium a

BACKGROUND: Flaxseed lignans, types of polyphenolic compounds, primarily consist of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG). Natural plant extracts are becoming increasingly important as feed for ruminant animals. An underutilized plant bioactive component, SDG shows promising benefits for young ruminant production. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of SDG on rumen fermentation using an in vitro rumen simulation technology. Additionally, we tested the effects of SDG (0.20 g kg-1 body weight) on rumen development and production performance of lambs in a production setting.

Semen quality is one of the most important factors for the success of artificial insemination which has been widely applied in swine industry to take the advantages of the superior genetic background and higher fertility capability of boars. Hydroxytyrosol (HT), a polyphenol, has attracted broad interest due to its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities. Sperm plasma membrane contains a large proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids which is easily impaired by oxidative stress and thus to diminish semen quality. In current investigation, we aimed to explore the ef

Gut microbiota appears to be involved in the pathogenesis of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The protein tyrosine phosphatase nonreceptor 2 (PTPN2) gene risk variant rs1893217 is associated with gut dysbiosis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and PTPN2 was mentioned as a possible risk gene for PSC. This study assessed the microbial profile of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients with PSC and without PSC (non-PSC). Additionally, effects of the PTPN2 risk variant were assessed. In total, 216 mucosal samples from ileum, colon, and rectum were collected from 7 PSC and 42 non-PSC patients, as

Responses of the microbiota to diet are highly personalized but mechanistically not well understood because many metabolic capabilities and interactions of human gut microorganisms are unknown. Here we show that sulfoquinovose (SQ), a sulfonated monosaccharide omnipresent in green vegetables, is a selective yet relevant substrate for few but ubiquitous bacteria in the human gut. In human feces and in defined co-culture, Eubacterium rectale and Bilophila wadsworthia used recently identified pathways to cooperatively catabolize SQ with 2,3-dihydroxypropane-1-sulfonate as a transient intermediate

Gallstone disease (GSD) has, for many years, remained a high-cost, socially significant public health problem. Over the past decade, a number of studies have been carried out-both in humans and in animal models-confirming the role of the microbiota in various sections of the gastrointestinal tract as a new link in the etiopathogenesis of GSD. The microbiome of bile correlates with the bacterial composition of saliva, and the microbiome of the biliary tract has a high similarity with the microbiota of the duodenum. Pathogenic microflora of the oral cavity, through mechanisms of immunomodulation

Recent evidence points to the gut microbiota as a regulator of brain and behavior, although it remains to be determined if gut bacteria play a role in chronic pain. The endocannabinoid system is implicated in inflammation and chronic pain processing at both the gut and central nervous system (CNS) levels. In the present study, we used low Vitamin D dietary intake in mice and evaluated possible changes in gut microbiota, pain processing and endocannabinoid system signaling. Vitamin D deficiency induced a lower microbial diversity characterized by an increase in Firmicutes and a decrease in Verr

Campylobacter species are frequently isolated from fecal specimens of patients with diarrheal illness. Several Campylobacter species are commonly isolated from the oral cavity. In contrast, Campylobacter species are rarely isolated from extra-oro-intestinal abscesses. Reported here are four cases of extra-oro-intestinal abscesses due to polymicrobial flora, including Campylobacter species. The first case is a 35-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a brain abscess caused by C. gracilis, Streptococcus constellatus, and anaerobic Gram-positive cocci. The second case is a 65-year-old man with a

Coeliac disease (CD) is the most common immune-mediated enteropathy characterized by chronic inflammation of the small intestinal mucosa. The ingestion of gluten is responsible for the symptoms of CD, but other environmental factors are also thought to play a role in this disorder. In this study, the composition of the duodenal microbiota of coeliac children with active disease, symptom-free CD patients on a gluten-free diet and control children was determined. Bacteriological analyses of duodenal biopsy specimens were carried out by fluorescent in situ hybridization coupled with flow cytometr

The aim of this study was to assess the incidence and susceptibility to antibacterial agents of anaerobic strains in 118 patients with head and neck abscesses (31) and cellulitis (87). Odontogenic infection was the most common identified source, occurring in 73 (77.7%) of 94 patients. The incidence of anaerobes in abscesses and cellulitis was 71 and 75.9%, respectively, and that in patients before (31 patients) and after (87) the start of empirical treatment was 80.6 and 72.4%, respectively. The detection rates of anaerobes in patients with odontogenic and other sources of infection were 82.2

Antibodies against a conserved RNA-binding protein, the Ro 60-kDa autoantigen, occur in 24-60% of all patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Anti-Ro antibodies are correlated with photosensitivity and cutaneous lesions in these patients and with neonatal lupus, a syndrome in which mothers with anti-Ro antibodies give birth to children with complete congenital heart block and photosensitive skin lesions. In higher eukaryotes, the Ro protein binds small RNAs of unknown function known as Y RNAs. Because the Ro protein also binds misfolded 5S rRNA precursors, it is proposed to function in a q

Total genomic DNA from samples of intact mouse small intestine, large intestine, caecum and faeces was used as template for PCR amplification of 16S rRNA gene sequences with conserved bacterial primers. Phylogenetic analysis of the amplification products revealed 40 unique 16S rDNA sequences. Of these sequences, 25% (10/40) corresponded to described intestinal organisms of the mouse, including Lactobacillus spp., Helicobacter spp., segmented filamentous bacteria and members of the altered Schaedler flora (ASF360, ASF361, ASF502 and ASF519); 75% (30/40) represented novel sequences.
