Cystic fibrosis research in allied health and nursing professions.

This report is the result of the "Allied Health and Nursing Professions Working Group" meeting which took place in Verona, Italy, November 2009, which was organised by the European Cystic Fibrosis Society, and involved 32 experts. The meeting was designed to provide a "roadmap" of high priority research questions that can be addressed by Allied Health Professionals (AHP) and nursing. The other goal was to identify research skills that would be beneficial to AHP and nursing researchers and would ultimately improve the research capacity and capability of these professions. The following tasks we

Hormonal contraception and headaches: what are the prescriber's options?

This article will review evidence-based hormonal contraception prescribing options in the primary care setting for reproductive age women who experience headaches. Safe prescribing of hormonal contraception requires the nurse practitioner to be able to differentiate between the common primary headache phenotypes, such as the migraine and the tension-type headache.

Supporting oral feeding in fragile infants: an evidence-based method for quality bottle-feedings of preterm, ill, and fragile infants.

Successful oral feeding of preterm and other ill and fragile infants is an interactive process that requires (1) sensitive, ongoing assessment of an infant's physiology and behavior, (2) knowledgeable decisions that support immediate and long-term enjoyment of food, and (3) competent skill in feeding. Caregivers can support feeding success by using the infant's biological and behavioral channels of communication to inform their feeding decisions and actions. The Supporting Oral Feeding in Fragile Infants (SOFFI) Method is described here with text, algorithms, and reference guides. Two of the a

Subcortical vascular dementia.

Vascular dementia is the second most prevalent type of dementia in the United States today. This article includes a review of its pathophysiology, which involves the damage of small vessels in the brain, an abundance of which are in the subcortical region, thus creating a subcategory called subcortical vascular dementia (SVD). Various diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, predispose the individual to damage to these small vessels. The symptoms of SVD are included as a review and helpful outline to differentiate SVD from Alzheimer's dementia and depression. Additionally, evidence-

Discharge management for children with complex needs.

There is now an expectation that children with complex (often technology-dependent) care needs will be cared for at home by parents who assume 24-hour responsibility following extensive training to nurse, care for and parent their child. A variety of models of discharge planning exist but the planning and process of discharge are persistently reported to be problematic from the perspective of families, professionals and commissioners. A consultation exercise with both parents and professionals indicated that nurses, doctors and social workers would benefit from some practical help and specific

Which nursing issues need a European guideline: proposal for respiratory management.

Over the past 30 years, nursing care and health systems have undergone significant changes in many aspects. Particularly, in the last decade, research and the expansion of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) have played a significant role in this process. EBP is the application of the best available evidence, which in practice means more effective interventions, more efficient use of resources and fewer side effects for patients. From a research point of view, EBP can facilitate the identification of knowledge gaps and thereby help establish research priorities. Furthermore, research evidence may su

WISECARE+: Results of a European study of a nursing intervention for the management of chemotherapy-related symptoms.

While the use of chemotherapy has significantly improved survival rates, the symptoms associated with chemotherapy remain a major burden for patients. Preventing or appropriately managing side effects significantly improves patients' functional status and quality of life, ultimately leading to greater patient acceptance of chemotherapy. However, symptom assessment and management are fraught with difficulties such as poor patient recall, retrospective assessment conducted by clinicians and lack of appropriate, clinically relevant and patient friendly symptom assessment and management tools. Using the prone position for ventilated patients with respiratory failure: a review.

AIMS: this review explored the evidence relating to prone positioning in ventilated patients diagnosed with respiratory failure, including acute lung injury (ALI) or adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). BACKGROUND: mortality rates for ventilated patients with ALI or ARDS are high, and there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the position these patients are nursed in may influence clinical outcomes. However, there are no guidelines to inform nursing practice in positioning these patients. METHOD: Medline, Scopus, Cinahl and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for or

[Application of Evidence-Based Healthcare in Clinical Translation: An Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experience].

This article was written to describe the authors' interprofessional collaboration experience with regard to the clinical translation of evidence-based healthcare. Building upon the spirit of evidence-based medicine invoked at the founding of the Cochrane Centre at Oxford University under the United Kingdom's National Health Service in 1992, our institution recognizes nursing as the core driving force supporting the translation of evidence-based healthcare in clinical settings. Using interdisciplinary collaboration mechanisms, systematic education and training, and knowledge translation strateg

Staff nurses' sites of choice for administering intramuscular injections to adult patients in the acute care setting.

AIM: The aim of this descriptive, correlational study was to determine intramuscular injection sites presently being used by acute care nurses in one Canadian province and factors that contribute to site selection. BACKGROUND: Intramuscular injections are routinely administered by nurses in acute care settings. Recent nursing literature recommends that the ventrogluteal site, rather than the dorsogluteal site, should be used for these injections, although evidence in the literature to support this claim is lacking. METHOD: A convenience sample of nurses employed in acute care settings was ac

UTI in patients with urethral catheters: an audit tool.

This article presents an audit tool for the evaluation of practice relating to urinary tract infection in hospital patients with indwelling urethral catheters. It has been formulated primarily because urinary tract infection is a known complication of catheterization, and because studies have shown practitioners' knowledge in this area to be poor. Although health professionals have an obligation to ensure their practice is evidence based, this requires substantial time and skills in critical appraisal. The standard presented here is based on evidence from an extensive literature review on how

Development of an evidence-based pain management protocol and its application in patients with postherpetic neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), the most prevalent complication of herpes zoster, severely compromises patients' quality of life. This study developed and evaluated an evidence-based nursing framework for a comprehensive PHN pain management program. METHODS: Guided by evidence-based principles, we systematically synthesized optimal evidence-including 2 clinical guidelines, 2 decision support tools, and 6 evidence summaries-to draft a PHN management program refined through expert consultations; using convenience sampling, 80 PHN patients from a tertiary hospital in Suzhou, China, wer

What's your literacy level?

I am writing this editorial after just returning from a conference highlighting an exciting evidence-based project headed by Dr. Shoo Lee from Toronto. Fondly known as EPIQ (Evidence-Based Practice for Improving Quality), this multiyear, multisite study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research uses benchmarking and a process of continuous quality improvement to address five morbidities in low birth weight infants: retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, and infection. The three pillars of EPIQ include evaluatio
