This study evaluated the evolution of low molecular weight organic compounds in ultrapure water (UPW) production using a pilot-scale UPW production system and an ultrafiltration-reverse osmosis (UF-RO) system. During UPW production, a dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal efficiency of 99.4% was achieved with a feedwater DOC level of 1.42 mg/L. The pretreatment, make-up, and polishing stages accounted for 85.3%, 13.7%, and 0.4% of DOC removal, respectively. Urea, trichloromethane, and dibromochloromethane persisted throughout UPW production process, contributing 24.7%, 9.2%, and 22.6%, respec

The mechanisms driving therapeutic resistance and poor outcomes of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) are incompletely understood. We characterize the cellular and molecular heterogeneity within and across patients and delineate the dynamic evolution of tumor and immune cell compartments at single cell resolution in longitudinal specimens from ibrutinib-sensitive patients and non-responders. Temporal activation of multiple cancer hallmark pathways and acquisition of 17q are observed in a refractory MCL. Multi-platform validation is performed at genomic and cellular levels in PDX models and larger pati

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) sequence type 9 (ST9) has emerged and disseminated in Asia. It is associated with colonization or infection in both humans and animal hosts; however, the genetic factors underpinning its adaptation to animal and human population remain to be determined. Here, we conducted a genomic analysis of 191 ST9 S. aureus genomes collected from 12 different countries, including 174 genomes retrieved from public databases and 17 sequenced in this study. In silico spa typing, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing, a

The high mutation rate in influenza virus genome and appearance of drug resistance calls for a constant effort to identify alternate drug targets and develop new antiviral strategies. The internal proteins of the virus can be exploited as a potential target for therapeutic interventions. Among these, the nucleoprotein (NP) is the most abundant protein that provides structural and functional support to the viral replication machinery. The current study aims at analysis of protein sequence polymorphism patterns, degree of molecular evolution and sequence conservation as a function of potential d

The Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) innate immunity gene product represents the sole member of the APOL gene family in humans capable of secretion into circulation, thereby mediating the trypanolysis of T. brucei brucei. Gain-of-function variants of the APOL1 gene originated and spread among human population groups to extend APOL1's protective capacity to include also serum-resistant subspecies, such as T. brucei gambiense (S342G known as APOL1-G1) and T. brucei rhodesiense (N388_Y389del known as APOL1-G2). The biochemical pathways underlying the lytic activity of these evolutionary favored mutation

Protein self-interaction to form homodimers and higher-order homo-oligomers is a ubiquitous phenomenon fundamental to living organisms. Recent structural, system-level, and computational insights reveal that self-interacting proteins dictate the specificity, rewiring, and topological complexity of cellular signaling networks and macromolecular assemblies. Beyond their physiological roles, aberrant or dysregulated homotypic interactions disrupt cellular proteostasis, driving the formation of toxic non-native oligomers, pathological amyloid fibrillization, or aberrant liquid-liquid phase separat

Characterized by a high mortality rate and a widening global distribution, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a tick-borne emerging infectious disease spawned from the Bandavirus dabieense (DBV). Shandong Province emerges as one of the predominant endemic areas for SFTS in China. On the account, this research probed into the epidemiological characteristics of SFTS in Shandong in 2024. On this basis, this study revealed the genetic evolutionary features and genotype distribution of locally circulating DBV strains through whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and phylogenetic analysis

Organisms evolve behavioral and morphological traits to adapt to their ecological niches, yet the genetic basis of adaptation remains largely unknown. Drosophila suzukii has evolved a distinctive oviposition preference for ripe fruit, unlike most Drosophila species such as D. melanogaster, which prefer overripe fruit. Carbon dioxide (CO2), a metabolic volatile that increases as fruit ripens and decays, may act as a critical ecological cue shaping these preferences. Here, we focus on D. suzukii and its sister species D. subpulchrella, which shows an intermediate preference, to investigate the g

The enzymatic hydrolysis of sorghum starch is fundamental to Jiangxiangxing Baijiu production. This study investigated the molecular-level degradation of starch during the initial fermentation phases by integrating GPC-MALLS-RI and HPAEC-PAD analyses. We quantified a progressive reduction in starch molecular weight and a structural shift from high- to low-degree-of-polymerization materials. Sugar profiling revealed a distinct temporal transition: heap fermentation served as the primary saccharification hotspot, predominantly accumulating glucose alongside maltose and maltotriose, while pit fer

During soil humification, organic matter (OM) develops distinct compositional and chemical signatures across the progressive stages. However, how these evolving OM characteristics influence iron (hydr)oxide transformation and ultimately regulate carbon preservation remains unclear. Through controlled anaerobic incubation experiments with ferrihydrite (Fh) and straw-derived OM from sequential soil humification stages under Fe(II)-mediated conditions, we found that advancing humification increasingly inhibited Fh crystallization, reducing its transformation to lepidocrocite/goethite from 45.3% i

The precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) route is widely adopted to fabricate carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (Cf/SiC) composites; however, the atomic-scale restructuring of the pyrolytic carbon/silicon carbide (PyC/SiC) interface during ceramization-and its impact on mechanical integrity-remains elusive. Here, reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF MD) simulations elucidate the coupled thermochemical-mechanical evolution of polycarbosilane (PCS) precursors on PyC substrates with orientation angles (OAs) of 0°, 25°, 55°, and 85°. Dynamic pyrolysis triggers a pivotal transition from

Coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) is a major causative agent of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in China. Based on 35 CVA16-positive strains isolated in Taiyuan (2023-2025), we characterized the post-pandemic evolutionary dynamics. Genomic analysis revealed the highest conservation in VP4 and the lowest in the 3' UTR. Temporally, a shift from B1a/B1b co-circulation to a three-lineage pattern (including a novel B1c subgenotype) was observed. Intertypic recombination was the primary driver, specifically targeting the 5'UTR and VP1/2A junction (B1a with EV71; B1b with CVA4; B1c with both). Cruciall

Mineral-catalyzed Maillard reactions have been proposed as plausible abiotic pathways for the formation of organic carbon in soil. However, the molecular characteristics of the resulting Maillard products and their linkages to real soil organic matter (SOM) remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted abiotic incubation experiments using glucose and glycine as model soil precursors with ferrihydrite (Fh) and birnessite (δ-MnO2) catalysis under environmentally relevant conditions. FT-ICR-MS analysis revealed that both minerals significantly accelerated the polymerization, yielding products that

In the recent survey, Japanese encephalitis (JE) is one of the most common mosquito-borne diseases, accounting for ∼30% of fatalities. The outbreaks of the JE virus (JEV) suggests that exhaustive study is essential for the prevention and management of the disease. The disease mainly spreads in humans and pigs by the vector: mosquito; as this is a major concern, this study had employed various bioinformatics tools to investigate the codon usage bias, evolutionary inference and selection pressure analysis of the Japanese encephalitis virus disease. The results indicated that the JE virus was bia

In 2013, a case of immunodeficiency vaccine-derived poliovirus (iVDPV) was identified in Jiangxi Province, China. In this study, we purified 14 type 3 original viral isolates from this case and characterized the molecular evolution of these iVDPVs for 298 days. Genetic variants were found in most of the original viral isolates, with complex genetic and evolutionary relationships among the variants. A phylogenetic tree constructed based on the P1 region showed that these iVDPVs were classified into lineage A and B. The dominant lineage B represents a major trend in virus evolution. The nucleoti

The genus Calliophis is the most basal branch of the family Elapidae and several species in it have developed highly elongated venom glands. Recent research has shown that C. bivirgatus has evolved a seemingly unique toxin (calliotoxin) that produces spastic paralysis in their prey by acting on the voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels. We assembled a transcriptome from C. bivirgatus to investigate the molecular characteristics of these toxins and the venom as a whole. We find strong confirmation that this genus produces the classic elapid eight-cysteine three-finger toxins, that δδ-elapitoxins

Understanding the evolution of viral pathogens is critical to being able to define how viruses emerge within different landscapes. Host susceptibility, which is spread between different species and is a contributing factor to the subsequent epidemiology of a disease, is defined by virus detection and subsequent characterization. Peste des petits ruminants virus is a plague of small ruminant species that is a considerable burden to the development of sustainable agriculture across Africa and much of Asia. The virus has also had a significant impact on populations of endangered species in recent

Snake venoms are complex mixtures of enzymes and nonenzymatic proteins that have evolved to immobilize and kill prey animals or deter predators. Among them, three-finger toxins (3FTxs) belong to the largest superfamily of nonenzymatic proteins. They share a common structure of three β-stranded loops extending like fingers from a central core containing all four conserved disulfide bonds. Most 3FTxs are monomers and through subtle changes in their amino acid sequences, they interact with different receptors, ion channels and enzymes to exhibit a wide variety of biological effects. The 3FTxs hav

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a natural toxicant in some aquatic environments that has diverse molecular targets. It binds to oxygen transport proteins, rendering them non-functional by reducing oxygen-binding affinity. Hence, organisms permanently inhabiting H2S-rich environments are predicted to exhibit adaptive modifications to compensate for the reduced capacity to transport oxygen. We investigated 10 lineages of fish of the family Poeciliidae that have colonized freshwater springs rich in H2S-along with related lineages from non-sulfidic environments-to test hypotheses about the expression an
