PURPOSE: To determine the rates and types of open-globe wounds in soldiers admitted to Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 2001 to 2011 after sustaining combat injuries.
METHODS: Data were collected in the Walter Reed Ocular Trauma Database. Inclusion criteria were patients who suffered open-globe injuries. Open-globe injuries were classified by type of wound: corneal, corneo-scleral or scleral, or type of open-globe injury: perforating, rupture, penetrating or intraocular foreign body. The primary analysis assessed the effect on final visual acuity (VA) and the risk of enucleation.

We report a case of concomitant choroidal hemangioma in an eye that harbored intraocular retinoblastoma (RB) in a 1-year-old child. A 12-month-old boy presented with right white pupil (Leukocoria). METHODS: The clinical records of two patients who underwent enucleation for uveal melanoma and later developed regional lymph node metastases were reviewed. Between December 1962 and May 1979, growth of choroidal and ciliary body melanomas was documented in 34 patients prior to enucleation, and in one patient whose eye was obtained at autopsy. Melanoma growth rates in 33 of these 35 eyes were calculated and compared with mitotic index, tumor cytology, tumor size, and mortality. A 44-year-old man had a blind painful right eye secondary to neovascular glaucoma. Cyclocryotherapy was performed because medical therapy was ineffective in lowering the intraocular pressure or reducing the pain. The eye became comfortable, but 5 months later vision decreased in the left eye. Examination revealed a marked posterior uveitis suggestive of sympathetic ophthalmia. Enucleation of the right eye and corticosteroid therapy were effective in eliminating inflammation in the left eye. Histopathologic examination of the exciting right eye revealed classic signs of sympathetic ophthalmia.

BACKGROUND: As long as Wolfgang Stock was head of the University Eye Clinic Tübingen (1921-1952), he founded a voluminous collection of ophthalmopathological slides, which reflect the knowledge about and possible therapies for various eye diseases at that time.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was evaluate the features and outcome of management of uveal melanoma in King Hussein Cancer Center as an example of a referral tertiary cancer center in the Middle East.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: This was aetrospective, observational case series of 46 eyes of 46 patients with uveal melanoma. Data collection required access to medical records, radiology and pathology reports, and laboratory results. The main outcome measures included age at diagnosis, tumor location and dimensions, TNM stage, treatment modality, visual outcome, metastasis, and mortality.

Avulsion of the globe is a rare event, and there are only a few reports of true total enucleation of the globes in the literature. We report a 20-year-old man who was a victim of car accident, with bilateral enucleation of the globe. This is the third reported case of bilateral subluxated globes that were successfully repositioned in the orbits. Although the patient had no light perception vision, preserving his one eye reduced the psychological stress of sudden traumatic loss of vision for him and his relatives.

CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 58-year-old man who presented at our emergency department with ocular pain and progressive loss of vision in his left eye. Ophthalmic examination detected a pigmented mass in the iridocorneal angle, involving the ciliary body. Glaucoma had also developed secondary to the melanotic lesion. Ophthalmoscopy showed a large pigmented choroidal tumor. After enucleation, pathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of a diffuse ocular melanoma.
DISCUSSION: Diffuse uveal melanoma is a malignant tumor that metastasises early. Enucleation is the treatment of choice

PURPOSE: Evaluation of efficacy and safety of proton radiation therapy (PRT) for medium- and large-size choroidal melanoma with focus on preservation of the eye and its function.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 78 patients with 60 medium and 18 large-size choroidal melanomas at a median follow-up of 34 months.

Cystic eye is a rare congenital disease representing a persistent primary ocular cyst cavity. A patient aged 2 is described with anophthalmia and cystic eye looking as an orbital tumor 25 x 35 mm in size. The infant suffered from delayed psychomotor and speech development. Ambilyacousia, thymomegaly, multiple hemangiomas of the skin, syndactyly, cryptorchidism, inguino-scrotal hernias were diagnosed. The totality of developmental abnormalities was a contraindication against anesthesia, therefore the proposed cystic eye enucleation with prosthesis implantation was not carried out.
