Pterygium is a common UV-induced degeneration of the limbal conjunctiva. Indications for surgery include loss of visual acuity, increasing astigmatism, impending invasion of the optical axis and ocular surface discomfort. Measures to reduce the risk of recurrence include 1. an optimal surgical strategy (intra-operative use of antimetabolites and free conjunctival graft), 2. postoperative topical therapy with steroids and lubricants free of preservatives and 3. long-term UV protection. Novel anti-angiogenic treatment approaches for prevention of recurrence of pterygium are discussed.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the epidemiology of superficial corneal foreign body.
METHODS: Patients who were seen at the Emergency Service of the Federal University of São Paulo, from April/05 to June/05, were screened and those with superficial corneal foreign body were interviewed. Data regarding gender, age, occupation, employment status, availability and use of protective devices and supervision of their use were collected. The aim of this study was to determine, in infants born at < or =29 weeks postmenstrual age until 32 weeks postmenstrual age, whether reduction to light stimulation by occlusion of eyes affected central visual development. The pattern visual-evoked potential responses at 41 and 51 weeks postmenstrual age and 3 y of age did not differ between infants subjected or not to ocular occlusion. Hence, an early marked reduction in light stimulation in preterm infants does not seem deleterious to visual development.

In cases of acute unilateral facial weakness, a careful and systematic evaluation is necessary to identify the cause. Idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell's palsy) is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is also the most common cause of unilateral facial weakness seen by primary care physicians. The most important aspect of initial treatment is eye protection. Administration of systemic oral corticosteroids may lessen severity and duration of symptoms.

We report a 6-week-old white boy of nonconsanguineous parents who presented with bluish scleral discoloration, thin corneas, and progressive high myopia. A diagnosis of brittle cornea syndrome was confirmed by molecular analysis and prompt measures were taken to manage the condition. Long-term follow-up of children diagnosed with brittle cornea syndrome is important to minimize the risks of corneal rupture and for detecting late-onset systemic conditions.

AIMS: To determine the severity and long term sequelae of eye injuries caused by modern sports that could be responsible for significant ocular trauma in the future.
METHODS: Prospective observational study of 24 (25 eyes) athletes with sports related ocular injuries from health clubs, war games, adventure, radical and new types of soccer, presenting to an eye emergency department between 1992 and 2002 (10 years).
