Separating early and intermediate vision EEG signatures of facial emotion recognition in a fast divided attention task to eye and mouth features.

INTRODUCTION: Face emotion recognition is a core component of social cognition. The N170 event-related potential (ERP) is a well-known neural marker of face perception. However, the sensitivity of the N170 and other early and intermediate ERP components, such as the P100 and P250, to the emotional content of facial expressions remains debated, possibly due to the influence of attentional mechanisms. We investigated whether early facial emotion perception can be tracked by modulation of these EEG signatures when participants are required to selectively process both eye gaze and mouth emotional

Is a lack of disgust something to fear? A functional magnetic resonance imaging facial emotion recognition study in euthymic bipolar disorder patients.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the neural responses invoked in the recognition of facial fear and disgust in euthymic bipolar patients as compared with healthy subjects. METHODS: This study examined 10 female euthymic bipolar patients, and 10 suitably matched healthy subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while subjects were engaged in an explicit facial emotion recognition task involving fear, disgust and neutral expressions. The activation paradigm involved nominating the facial expression using specified response keys. Behavioural data were collected and analysed and both wi

An intelligent context-aware facial emotion recognition system for hearing-impaired individuals using large language models and neural network-based feature fusion.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) plays a vital role in understanding human behavior and communications, with applications in human-computer interaction, surveillance, healthcare, and multimedia content analysis. Emotion recognition is challenging as it necessitates capturing and analysing subtle variations in facial expressions together with dynamic speech variations. Hearing impairment in youngsters and children has significant effects on social, emotional, and behavioural growth. Communication problems could affect the social and emotional improvement of a hearing-impaired individual. Emotio

Cross-country variance in facial emotion recognition in presymptomatic and symptomatic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia: Insights from the GENFI and ReDLat consortia.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated international differences in facial emotion recognition (FER) across stages of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Previous studies may have missed early decline by combining data and masking variations in FER across countries. METHODS: An FER test was administered to 159 individuals with behavioral variant FTD, 521 presymptomatic pathogenic variant carriers, and 583 controls from 16 countries of residence. Linear mixed models assessed age, sex, education, and country effects on FER. Voxel-based morphometry examined neural correlates across countries. REULTS: Country

Facial emotion recognition deficits following moderate-severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): re-examining the valence effect and the role of emotion intensity.

UNLABELLED: Many individuals who sustain moderate-severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are poor at recognizing emotional expressions, with a greater impairment in recognizing negative (e.g., fear, disgust, sadness, and anger) than positive emotions (e.g., happiness and surprise). It has been questioned whether this "valence effect" might be an artifact of the wide use of static facial emotion stimuli (usually full-blown expressions) which differ in difficulty rather than a real consequence of brain impairment. This study aimed to investigate the valence effect in TBI, while examining emotion

Exploring difference in recognition and confusion of facial expressions between high and low problematic internet use individuals: Evidence from behavior and ERPs.

Accurate recognition of facial expressions is crucial for effective interpersonal socialization, but individuals with problematic internet use (PIU) may face challenges. This study compared facial expression recognition between high PIU (HPIU) and low PIU (LPIU) individuals across three experiments. Experiment 1, using six-alternative forced choice task, found that HPIU individuals recognized six basic emotions significantly less accurately than LPIU individuals and showed greater confusion, particularly for negative expressions. Experiment 2 focused on anger and disgust expressions using the

Face processing and efficient recognition of facial expressions are impaired following right but not left anteromedial temporal lobe resections: Behavioral and fMRI evidence.

Anteromedial temporal lobe structures seem to support processing of faces and facial expressions. However, differential effects of unilateral left or right temporal lobe resections (TLR) on face processing, recognition of facial expressions, and on BOLD response to faces in intact brain areas are not yet fully understood. Therefore, we compared 39 patients with unilateral TLR (18 left, 21 right) and 20 healthy controls regarding recognition of facial identity and emotional facial expressions as well as BOLD response to fearful and neutral faces. We found impaired recognition of facial identity

Childhood facial emotion recognition and psychosis-like symptoms in a nonclinical population at 12 years of age: results from the ALSPAC birth cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Nonclinical psychotic symptoms (for example, low intensity or low frequency psychotic symptoms such as ideas of reference or single word auditory hallucinations) are common in adolescents and may be associated with an increased risk of developing a psychotic disorder in adulthood. Those at high risk of developing a psychotic disorder appear to perform poorly on facial emotion recognition tasks but the relationship between facial emotion recognition and nonclinical "psychosis like symptoms" (PLIKS) in children is unclear. We aimed to examine the association between childhood facia

The Effect of Body Expressions on the Learning Process and Facial Recognition among Healthy Participants and Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury: Examination Using Eye Movements.

OBJECTIVE: Context-dependent effect (CDE) is a process by which reinstating at test the original learning context enhances the recall ability of the material being studied. Although recognition by people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is poorer than that of healthy controls, both groups show CDE equally. In the current study, we seek to test the effect of body emotional expressions as contextual information, on facial recognition, and eye movements. METHOD: Twenty-four healthy individuals and 27 patients with moderate-to-severe TBI participated in the study. Participants were exposed to ph…

Impaired Recognition of Static and Dynamic Facial Emotions in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Stimuli of Varying Intensities, Different Genders, and Age Ranges Faces.

A multitude of research on facial emotion recognition (FER) in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have been published since several years. However, these studies have mainly used static high intensity stimuli, including adult and/or children facial emotions. This current study investigated FER in children with ASD using an innovative task, composed of a combination of static (114 pictures) and dynamic (36 videos) subtests, including children, adolescent, and adult male and female faces, with high, medium, and low intensity of basic facial emotions, and neutral expression. The ASD group consisted

Childhood maltreatment results in altered deactivation of reward processing circuits in depressed patients: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of a facial emotion recognition task.

IMPORTANCE AND OBJECTIVES: Childhood adversity is a strong risk factor for the development of various psychopathologies including major depressive disorder (MDD). However, not all depressed patients experience early life trauma. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies using facial emotion processing tasks have documented altered blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) responses in specific cortico-limbic networks both in MDD patients and in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM). Therefore, a history of maltreatment may represent a key modulating factor responsible

Facial expression recognition deficits in frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease: a meta-analytic investigation of effects of phenotypic variant, task modality, geographical region and symptomatic specificity.

Deficits in social cognition may be present in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we conduct a qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis of facial expression recognition studies in which we compare the deficits between both disorders. Furthermore, we investigate the specificity of the deficit regarding phenotypic variant, domain-specificity, emotion category, task modality, and geographical region. The results reveal that both FTD and AD are associated with facial expression recognition deficits, that this deficit is more pronounced in FTD compared to AD and that t

Examining the Relationship Between Physical Neglect, Inflammation and Anterior Cingulate Activation During Facial Emotion Recognition in Patients With Schizophrenia and Healthy Controls: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

Physical neglect is associated with poorer cognitive functioning in patients with schizophrenia, including deficits in facial emotion recognition. Recent research by our group showed the relationship between physical neglect and facial emotion recognition is mediated by inflammation. While this mediation effect was observed at the level of behaviour, examining the relationship between physical neglect, inflammation and neural activation during facial emotion recognition would help confirm brain regions impacted and support behavioural findings, but these relationships are unclear. Two hundred
